POPSWar and foreign policy [truly outstanding!] The best lessons of Iraq and Afghanistan are not about Bush failures, nor about a need to change the military, but rather about the nature of foreign policy; challenges the shibboleths of left and right. Andrew Bacevich, professor of history and international relations at Boston University, retired from the US Army with the rank of colonel. This piece is adapted from his new book, The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism.

POPSWhere bombs were born, birds now flock More than 4.7 million tons of low-level waste remain at Fernald in a fenced-off, 110-acre pile encased in thick liners and caps made of synthetic material, clay, rock and clean soil. The 65-foot-high, grass-covered mound snaking along an edge of the preserve is about the length of two Empire State Buildings laid end to end. The rest of the radioactive waste - more than a million tons - was shipped to storage and disposal sites in Nevada, Utah and Texas. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I can express a naughty thought, that I hope the toxic waste sent to Texas goes near Bush's home, and far away from Wiccan Texan.

POPSThe Shadow of Ryazan: Putin’s Government
In explaining his support for the American-led antiterrorist coalition after Sept. 11, 2001, Putin said that Russia had also been a victim of terrorism. This experience, however, looks rather different if the bombings in September, 1999 were carried out by the Russian government as part of an effort to preserve the power and wealth of a criminal oligarchy. The strongest indication that elements of the Russian government were responsible for the bombings, however, was the history of the supposed training exercise in Ryazan. In that incident, the FSB was forced to admit that they had put a bomb in the basement of a civilian apartment building because they were caught in the act. The incident began on the night of September 22, six days after the bombing of Volgodonsk, when police answering a call reporting suspicious activity discovered a bomb in the basement of a building. Experts arriving at the scene found that the bomb tested positive for hexogen. Read full article

POPSPlucky little Georgia? No, the cold war reading won't wash All is not what is what it looks like.... Cont: Devoted to achieving Nato entry for Georgia, Saakashvili has sent troops to Iraq and Afghanistan - and so clearly felt he had American backing. The streets of the Georgian capital are plastered with posters of George W Bush alongside his Georgian protege. George W Bush avenue leads to Tbilisi airport. But he has ignored Kissinger's dictum: "Great powers don't commit suicide for their allies." Perhaps his neoconservative allies in Washington have forgotten it, too. Let's hope not.

POPSFox News: Edwards Yes, Georgia War, No From the article: ERBE: The American public have told pollsters, this political season they want substance. Both these candidates have expressed support for allowing Georgia into NATO. … We could have been on the verge of nuclear war. Those are the kinds of the things that the American public wants to see discussed. JARRETT: Right. You know, but getting back to Edwards, during the Monica Lewinsky affair, Edwards absolutely ripped into Bill Clinton.

POPSMichael Phelps Is Off To A Roaring Start, Wins Gold, Sets World Record Phelps' victory in a world-record time of 4 minutes 3.84 seconds was thoroughly convincing -- and quite possibly utterly demoralizing to those audacious enough to think they can stop him. Second to Laszlo Cseh of Hungary after the first 50 meters and second to Lochte at the 150-meter mark, Phelps sliced through the water with unmatched power to take the lead halfway through the four-stroke race. Popping up from the water while the crowd roared and fans waved American flags, Phelps pointed the index fingers of each hand skyward, beads of water sliding off his back, and then pumped his left fist. His face was wet, possibly from water and possibly from a few stray tears. It was impossible to tell the difference. The roar intensified as he climbed out of the pool and crossed the deck, swirls of red, white and blue in the hands of fans from every nation and both Presidents Bush, current and former.

POPSPakistan's Musharraf Facing Impeachment Bush gov't has propped him up and spent millions in tax dollars supporting his regime. This changes everything, which is why Bush (and Obama) have been moving toward blatant intervention within Pakistan militarily.

POPS The Left vs Free Speech The truly outrageous aspect of such comparisons is that the American left, with its Stalin-redux willingness to rearrange history, neglects to mention that, outside of Japan, all of the 20th century's great totalitarian regimes had roots on the political left. It wasn't just Lenin and Stalin whose propaganda machine prefigured MoveOn. Nazi is an acronym for "National Socialist." Read Mein Kampf. It isn't a tribute to free-market capitalism, folks. Mussolini was a populist. Mao was a leftist, as was Pol Pot. The last century's worst censors and book burners all emerged from leftist ideologies. As this column recently pointed out, Support Our Troops, Bring Them Home! disappeared from the political scene the instant Obama called for sending those troops to Afghanistan and Pakistan, instead of back to Fort Hood. For the hardcore left, the party line always trumps conscience. MoveOn isn't new - it's just Pravda with poor punctuation.

POPSThe Audacity Hustle Exposed It's all part of the Audacity Hustle. Obama is running the most audacious campaign in American history. But the Hustle only works for the real suckers. His German Tiergarten speech with "Citizens of the world!" -- a direct echo of "Workers of the world!" from the Communist Manifesto of 1848. "We are the change we've been waiting for!" It's repeated in The Obama Hustle over and over again. But it's just Fidel Castro's slogan, "La Revolucion Somos Nosotros!" --- "We are the Revolution!" Most Americans don't know that Obama's Soviet Realism pics are just imitation Lenin posters. The same thing for The Decembrist rock band to echo the Russian Decemberist rebellion. That's why the Decembrist rockers play the Soviet National Anthem to start their concerts. Get it? The whole idea that Obama is a devout Christian is another fraud; he's a militant atheist, just like Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright.

POPSPlacebo Very good article on market place of bizarre therapies and drugs in treatment of 'mental illness'. Deserves critical engagement of intellect which won't please some. (BTW, 'placebo' means 'I will please').
