POPSTime To Man Up, Barry
The sentence for Kian Tajbakhsh was the longest prison term yet in a mass trial of more than 100 opposition figures, activists and journalists in the post election turmoil. The longest sentence so far, yet news accounts offer no explanation as to what Mr. Tajbakhsh did to deserve arrest, let alone a 12 year sentence. Apparently he was arrested at his home, not at a demonstration. News of his sentence was coupled with reports of lenient treatment given to a Canadian citizen: At the same time, Iran allowed another defendant to leave the country--Canadian-Iranian Maziar Bahari, a Newsweek journalist arrested in the same crackdown who had been freed on bail over the weekend. Bahari joined his British wife, who is in the last days of her pregnancy, in London, Newsweek said on its Web site Tuesday. It could be a coincidence. But news accounts certainly raise a question whether the mullahs are publicly sticking their finger in the Obama administration's eye, letting a Canadian go . .

POPSDesk-Bound Journalists Blow Hopi and Navajo Green Stories It is sad to see what damage can be done when some journalists take to rewriting company PR. The hard work of Hopi and Navajo people to save their land and heritage is easily overlooked and set back by those who have degrees in journalism process but no on-the-ground knowledge about anything or the gumption to get at all sides of a story.

POPSTotally amazing artwork in sand.....i'm awestruck This great performance recently aired on Ukraine’s Got Talent. What country doesn’t have a Got Talent show these days? Anyway, I think this artist could win on any talent show. Kseniya Simonova tells stories using sand and light. This story leaves the audience awestruck. It’s both tragic and sweet. By the end there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Simonova took home the grand prize. Can’t argue with the judges on this one.

POPSThe beauty and terror of science A good history of science unreels like the practice of science itself. It wends through a world of experiments until a new reality arises. But the more layered story of that journey is that science is not just a process but is the men and women performing it. In his radiant new book, "The Age of Wonder," Holmes treats us to the amazing lives of the pioneering sailors and balloonists, astronomers and chemists of the Romantic era. Making good on the book's subtitle, he takes us on a dazzling tour of their chaotic British observatories and fatal explorations in African jungles, showing us "how the Romantic generation discovered the beauty and terror of science."

POPSA Soldier's Story Part I Return to Tarawa to discover a battlefield covered in garbage and human waste, and the unspeakable disgrace of having hundreds of fallen American heroes " including a man posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor " buried under parking lots and septic tanks. There are somewhat graphic images, and a few moments of salty language " but this is something I would encourage you to watch with your families, simply because it is so heartbreaking. If we do not often remember the cost of our freedoms, we will surely lose them. Listening to what these boys did for us " and that’s what they were: teen-aged boys, for the most part " brought home to me the debt we owe these remarkable men. It is the very least we can do to listen to their stories. They are amazing stories, funny and tragic and full of wisdom, and I mean to tell as many of them as I can, from World War 2 up through the present.

POPSGuantanamo Bay: Camp Justice Photo
This story is a half-year old but I just became aware of the photo and isn't it amazing: A prison camp now associated with the greatest injustice in modern American history has the name: "Camp Justice." A lot of propaganda, it seems, is just made up hostile and negative stories about people and nations or blatant lies and "re-branding," of our own evils. In a sense we're just naive to believe any of it, although it is convenient and comfortable to do so...especially when we have little real power to change things. Or, at least, we can't change things overnight. Even the President, Obama is fidning out firsthand, can't change things overnight -- this week the Democratic controlled Congress voting against funding his 'Close Gitmo,' proposal. He had to give a speech, calling the Congress action 'irrational,' and reminding the nation of it's Constitution and principles. We're in a mess, 4sure. We just have to keep working on electing better leaders for generation after g

POPSThe Beautiful Truth Garrett is a 15-year old boy living in the Alaskan wilderness with a menagerie of orphaned animals. Growing up close with nature has given him a deep understanding of nutritional needs required by diet sensitive animals on the reserve. Unfortunately, the untimely and tragic death of his mother propelled him into a downward spiral and he risked flunking out of school. This led to his father’s decision to home-school Garrett. His first assignment was to study a controversial book written by Dr. Max Gerson.
