Endangered Bird Becomes Internet Sensation: Sirocco the Kakapo Hits the Big Time
JackieDel
by JackieDel  10-10-2009
Sirocco was featured in a recent BBC series entitled "Last Chance To See," profiling some of the thousands of species of animals in the world that are threatened with extinction, mostly due to human incursion and our effects on wild habitat. A report last summer by the International Union for Conservation of Nature asserts that "nearly one third of amphibians, more than one in eight birds and nearly a quarter of mammals are threatened with extinction." As the Kakapo Conservation website reminds us, "6 billion people on earth; only 124 kakapo." Not a good ratio, and one repeated thousands of times over, around the world. Sirocco is named for a warm Mediterranean wind. Let's hope he wafts into human conscience with a renewed sense of wonder for the amazing and gorgeous creatures on this planet, and a reminder of our responsibility for them.

The Amazing Versatility of Animal Tongues
sweetdevika18
by sweetdevika18  9-30-2009
Some animals put us to shame with their tongues and what they can do with them. No teenaged first French kiss nerves for any of the creatures featured here. The muscle in our mouths used to manipulate food for chewing and swallowing is also of course the primary organ of taste.

Has Japan's Dolphin Slaughter Been Prevented?
papananook
by papananook  9-3-2009
Today, the dolphin slaughter was set to begin in Taiji, but the tides there may have changed. Here's a dispatch from O'Barry who has just returned to Japan for the start of the killing season: When I got off the bus at the Cove this afternoon, I was accompanied by my son Lincoln O'Barry's film crew, a crew from Associated Press, Der Spiegel (the largest magazine in Germany), and the London Independent. No dolphins and no dolphin killers. We would not have had a story at all, except for the police who were there, waiting all day for us to appear. Nine policemen came to talk to us... And as I was talking with the police, as the international journalists stood around listening, suddenly a camera crew arrived from Japan! And then another! And then still another! You have to understand that this is SO IMPORTANT. These TV stations have REFUSED to cover the story in Taiji for years and years. NOW, for the first time, they have shown up, with cameras rolling. T

Dog who was set alight & left for dead to face his torturers in court
JackieDel
by JackieDel  8-22-2009    5
"Their attack was so vicious that the Perpignan court authorities have already ruled that they should remain anonymous for fear of reprisals. 'They have cause widespread disgust, and there have already been threats of violence made against them' said a local police spokesman. 'Mambo was clearly looking for help when he went missing. He approached the pair because he is extremely friendly, but they showed him nothing but cruelty. 'He was held down by the woman, and then the man poured petrol over him, and set him alight. 'He was left for dead, but animal aid workers were alerted and managed to save him. He has made an amazing recovery. People are so distressed by what happened that 200 marched through the streets of Espira-de-l'Agly village in protest last week." This despicable pair face up to of 6 months in jail! That's not nearly enough. The laws need changing.

John Scalzi's guide to the most epic FAILs in Star Wars Design
Lexica
by Lexica  8-20-2009
More: Bad design in Star Wars is not just limited to stuff; evolution here seems wacky, too. Three choice bits: Sarlaac A monstrous yet immobile creature who lives in an exposed pit in the middle of a lifeless desert, waiting for large animals to apparently feel suicidal and trek out to throw themselves in? Yeah, not so much. Not every Sarlaac can count on an intergalactic mob boss to feed it tidbits. That Asteroid Worm Thing in Empire Strikes Back So, large space worm lives in asteroid, disguises itself as a cave and waits for unwary spaceships to fly by so it can eat them? Makes the Sarlaac look like a marvel of natural selection, it does. Midi-Chlorians Oh, man, don't get me started. Except to say this: If in fact a high concentration of midi-chlorians is the difference between being a common schmoe and being a dude who can Force Choke his enemies, the black market in midi-chlorian injections must be amazing. Star Trek fans, don't get smug: I'm going after it ne

3,000-year-old oak barrel of butter found in Kildare bog
cakebelly
by cakebelly  8-20-2009    3
more (at source): The barrel is also split along the middle, which is common with utensils filled with butter found in the bogs. A conservator at the National Museum, Carol Smith, told that the butter expands over time, causing the split. The barrel is about three feet long and almost a foot wide, and weighs almost 35kgs, (77lbs). The butter has changed to white and is now adipocere, which is essentially animal fat, the same sort of substance that is found on well-preserved bodies of people or animals found in the bog. The two men put the barrel in the cab of their tractor and brought it back to their base. "We put it in a black plastic bag," Mr Fitzharris explained. And last Tuesday in the Conservation Department of the National Museum of Ireland in Collins Barracks, the two men were reunited with the barrel in the company of Monasterevin man and one of the museum's keepers, Pádraig Clancy and conservator Carol Smith. Mr Clancy was contacted by Bord na Móna's archaeo

Could dogs be the fastest land animals in the world?
Aribeth
by Aribeth  8-18-2009
His ability to reach top speed quickly is amazing. At maximum acceleration a greyhound can reach a speed of 45 mph (72km/h) within its first 6 strides from a standing start. No other land animal (except the cheetah) has that degree of acceleration. However, the greyhound is also a distance runner. He can settle into a speed in excess of 35 miles per hour and can run at that rate for distances as great as 7 miles (11 kilometres). This means that while the cheetah can win the short sprint race, in any long race the greyhound will leave that big cat way behind, panting in the dust.
