POPSExuberance of light - amazing "These are refraction patterns or 'caustics' formed by a light beam passing through a shaped and textured plastic form. The pattern is captured directly on to 35mm film by removing the camera lens and putting the transparent object in its place. The processed film is digitally scanned for uploading. Please note these are not computer generated images but a true analogue of the way light is refracted by the objects I create" Reciprocity's amazing photostream.

POPSThou art that--Alan Watts (thanks to Cathy E. in LJ...Watts continues: If you go out at night and look at the stars you will realize that they are millions and millions and billions of miles away - vast configurations out in space! You can lie back and look at that and say, "Whew! Surely I hardly matter. I am just a tiny little peek-a-boo on this weird spot of dust called Earth, and all that out there was going on billions of years before I was born, and will still go on billions of years after I die." Nothing may seem stranger to you than that - more different than you. But there comes a point when you will say, "Why, that's me!" And when you know that, you never die."

POPSOcean Glints Could Reveal Alien Planets "Crescent phase is where the starlight would be glancing off the edge of the planet toward our telescopes," says Williams, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie. "That would be when the light is coming at the surface at a very steep angle, and the specular reflection would be the strongest and most intense." Williams ran simulations of idealized, cloud-free planets with three types of surfaces: unfrozen land, snow and ice, and water. His goal was to see to what extent the presence of water would contribute to the light coming from a planet in another solar system.

POPSSan Francisco Fights Border Crime?
San Francisco received more SWBPI grant money in 2006 than Los Angeles County or San Diego County which do have bona fide border problems. As a result, we found that all of the SWBPI reimbursements submitted by San Francisco were not supported. In other words, San Franciso officials apparently submitted made-up data to document the expenditure of funds since it had apparently no records for "real" cases. Perhaps there are no "real" cases because the official policy of the City is not ask anyone if they are in the country illegally. According to the San Francisco Chronicle Federal officials say they will ask San Francisco to repay the $5.4 million the city has received as part of the program, but they have not determined how to go about it. This audit comes on the heels of a TV, radio and billboard public relations effort by the City to encourage illegal aliens to relocate to San Francisco where they can receive schooling, health care and other benefits.

POPSRedefining Marriage a form of 'Soft Despotism' according to author
"In claiming for homosexuals the right to marry," she reasons, the "state also claims for itself the ability to declare what constitutes marriage . . . It transforms marriage from a pre-political obligation into its own creation." But as an artificial creation of the state, same-sex "marriage" is "an institution that needs to be coddled . . . Its very fragility demands a culture in which it is protected." This means, as Sugrue argues, that "once marriage becomes a statist institution for the sake of consenting adults, the state will increasingly be called upon to create the social conditions to protect these unions." The need for coddling means the state will use public education for this end, and align itself against churches that refuse to recognize same-sex "marriage." State-ordered gay "marriage" is an attack, not only on legitimate marriage, but upon religious freedom and the freedom not to have one's children indoctrinated into alien ideas about marriage.

POPSAvoiding ‘CSI Kandahar’
they’ve just invalidated — decided the job is better done by politically unaccountable courts … the better to spare Nadler and his cohort from telling voters exactly what protections they’d lavish on the people trying to kill us. The attorney general begs to differ. The justices ruled that detainees get judicial review, but, as he posits, they “stopped well short of detailing how the habeas corpus proceedings must be conducted.” Many significant questions remain open, and, Mukasey rightly insists, “it is well within the historic role and competence of Congress and the executive branch to attempt to resolve them.” LAYING DOWN MARKERS The Justice Department has to live with the chaos caused by Boumediene’s dumping of approximately 270 combatants on the district courts with no guidance about how the cases should be handled. Fans of Kennedy & Co. laughably point to this as a demonstration of the high Court’s restraint. In Justice Antonin Scalia’s apt dissenting phrase

POPSMicropbes Under Sea Floor Shows Possibility of Alien Life However, this population lives at an unusual rate. Single-celled organisms usually consume food for energy and then rather than grow larger, simply divide and reproduce themselves. While the Bacteria Escherichia Coli, as an example, doubles its numbers every 20 minutes, these Archaea double on the order of hundreds or thousands of years and consume very little energy. "In essence, these microbes are almost, practically dead by our normal standards," says House. "They metabolize a little, but not much." According to House, organisms metabolizing at such slow rates is what we could expect to find in other areas of our solar system because such environments have much less energy available than on Earth. Perhaps, similar organisms may be in hydrothermal vents beneath the ice of Europa -- the second moon of Jupiter -- or in subsurface aquifers of Mars.
