POPS Draconian drug tests The new welfare reform bill gives unprecedented new powers to Jobcentre staff There are further concerns about rights and liberties. For the first time Jobcentres will be able to share information with the police, the probation service and "others" to check the "accuracy" of information provided by the claimant. This could include information about drug-testing on arrest, court orders and sentencing and substance-related treatment received in prison or the community. While the bill protects against evidence acquired by Jobcentres being used in criminal proceedings against the claimant, the information sharing is two-way with no obvious barrier preventing the police using the information to prompt or inform a line of inquiry or criminal investigation.

POPSMilkscreen - test detects alcool in breast milk This has got to be the most stupid invention out there. I can just see the scenario: mom had a few after work, crawls home and wait... it's time to feed the baby... but the brain hasn't been totally turned to mush.. .so she recalls that perhaps testing the milk would be in order, cause she's concerned about the baby, no? And great - she was right to test it, the level is too high AND... I guess no feeding tonight. What a lunacy!

POPSMotorists face zero drink drive limit The hardcore drink-drivers will take no notice of any limit, and it will generally be Mr or Mrs Average who would fall foul of such limits. Not for one moment am I advocating drinking and driving: I won't go near a car when I've had a drink but, like many others, I enjoy a drink in the evening, and I believe that a zero limit would be a restrictive measure imposed on the mostly responsible members of society because the risk inherent in such a limit may result in many people being caught in the 'Morning after' trap even though they had only drunk a moderate amount the night before. As for random breath testing: It already exists. The police can stop any motorist at any time and require one to take a breath test because an officer has perceived what he believes to be a driving offence on the part of the driver.

POPSHmm: Internet porn prevents rapes (Slate, Oct 2006) The article has an interesting couple paragraphs on porn: "Similarly, psychologists have found that male subjects, immediately after watching pornography, are more likely to express misogynistic attitudes. But as professor Kendall points out, we need to be clear on what those experiments are testing: They are testing the effects of watching pornography in a controlled laboratory setting under the eyes of a researcher. The experience of viewing porn on the Internet, in the privacy of one's own room, typically culminates in a slightly messier but far more satisfying experience—an experience that could plausibly tamp down some of the same aggressions that the pornus interruptus of the laboratory tends to stir up. In other words, if you want to understand the effects of on-screen sex and violence outside the laboratory, psych experiments don't tell you very much. Sooner or later, you've got to look at the data."
