POPSCoach Jenny: Run faster without running harder More: Finally, perform a head-to-toe inventory at every mile marker beyond 15 miles on the course. Doing so will decrease the chance of running with inefficient form due to fatigue. Think head over relaxed shoulders, arms swinging at 90 degrees like a pendulum from the shoulders, hands relaxed, hips under the shoulders and short, quick strides landing under the hips.

POPS‘Leopard Behind You!’ A human in a blue shirt is announced differently from a human in a yellow shirt. In and of itself, it’s not surprising that the sounds animals make are not just noise, or a reflection of the state an animal’s in (scared, happy and so on). But the subtlety of the calls — the full amount of meaning they contain — is only now being appreciated. Animals of one species often respond to the alarms of another. In a small way, it’s like those childrens’ stories that have rats talking to toads, or elephants arguing with ostriches. Predators sometimes respond too. After all, alarm calls don’t just let other animals know there’s danger in the area. They can also let a predator know that it’s been seen. Ambush predators, like leopards, often give up and go away once an alarm has been sounded. <<

POPSHysteria, not H1N1, taxing healthcare An outbreak of hovering parents nationwide causes the truly ill to wait for care. There are fees for unnecessarily setting off burglar alarms and fire alarms, how about private MD's charging more for Helicopter Hannah bringing in her child during an epidemic of a viral disease which has no cure when the child is merely in discomfort. What passes as "education" by the MSM is often just scaremongering to lift ratings. Maybe a set of guidelines for when to actually seek medical help in a report warning of deaths of toddlers would be responsible.

POPSGrowth of Ocean ‘Garbage Patch’ Alarms Experts Nope, it’s not going away. It’s the smallest pieces that are of most concern, the “bite-sized” pieces that are interacting with the food chain: bottlecaps, bags and wrappers. Plastic sea trash doesn't biodegrade and often floats at the surface, coming from overflowing sewage systems and then drift thousands of miles. The sheer quantity of plastic that accumulates in the North Pacific Gyre, a vortex formed by ocean and wind currents and located 1,000 miles off the California coast, has the scientists worried about how it might harm the sea creatures there. Plastics have entangled birds and turned up in the bellies of fish, and one paper cited by the NOAA estimates 100,000 marine mammals die trash-related deaths each year. Only humans are to blame for ocean debris. Only humans can do something about it.

POPSU.S. Web-Tracking Plan Stirs Privacy Fears In a statement Monday, American Civil Liberties Union spokesman Michael Macleod-Ball said the move could "allow the mass collection of personal information of every user of a federal government website." Even groups that support updating the policy question whether the administration is seeking changes at the request of private companies, such as online search giant Google, as the industry's economic clout and influence in Washington have grown rapidly. Two prominent technology policy advocacy groups, the Electronic Privacy Information Center and Electronic Frontier Foundation, cited the terms of a Feb. 19 contract with Google, in which a unnamed federal agency explicitly carved out an exemption from the ban so that the agency could use Google's YouTube video player. Contract Terms The terms of the contract, negotiated through the General Services Administration, "expressly waives those rules or guidelines as they may apply to Google."
