POPSRuled Out In-Flight Explosion--Pilots See Descending White Light Reports indicate the plane entered the water relatively intact. Possible, an airliner's fuel tank exploded off of Long Island in the Atlantic ocean several years ago. The forward section separated from the rest of the plane. The plane, absent cockpit and the accompanying forward section, continued to fly. It even gained altitude mainly due to the resultant loss of weight. This plane was intact for much of the climb and dive sequence. Fireballs were reported in this case. POPSAirbus 330 - Electric Jet Still Missing One of the statements made about a loss of pressure, reminds me of a Turkish flight that lost a cargo door. This resulted in a catastrophic cabin pressure loss that collapsed part of the cabin floor, pulling out several passengers, Worse, it also severed hydraulic systems that controlled the aircrafts wing surfaces. This plane plowed into the ground at over 500 mph just outside of Paris. Loss of cabin pressure--bomb??? Too soon to speculate....

POPSExperts: Plane that crashed had prior engine problem Why we haven't heard much about bird strikes with such disastrous effect before? It looks like birds sucking into the engines regularly, nobody raised any concern. I think, jet engine can burn freely tons of them. Without big problems. I mean, good engines. But this time engines of this particular aircraft were not able to withstand additional burden of incoming poultry. So here we have two rather discouraging conclusions: 1) Nobody care about birds and, mainly, 2) Apparently not much care was exercised about condition of aircrafts. Striking similarity with fallen bridge in Minnesota and "sound condition" of US economy on the whole. Visible sign of ongoing recession. Sporadic heroism could not be a solution for system crisis.:(

At least 15 people, primarily civilians, were killed in heavy shelling and airstrikes of the capital Tskhinvali, news agency Interfax cited South Ossetian officials as saying. Georgia accused three Russian Sukoi SU-24 aircrafts of bombing Georgian villages, and a short time later, sent out five of the same jet to carry out attacks on South Ossetia. Russia denied it had sent out bombers Friday. 'A full-scale military aggression has been launched against Georgia,' Saakashvili said in his speech, calling on Russia to 'immediately stop bombardment of the Georgian towns.' But Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin blamed Georgia with initiating the 'aggressive action' in televised comments from Beijing and said that Russia would be compelled to retaliate. But the United States is a close ally of the pro-Western Saakashvili, and it is its backing of Georgia's bid to join NATO in April that is seen to have escalated tension in the region.

Condensation trails (contrails) formed by aircrafts are sometimes visible from the ground for several hours. Numerous contrails are formed in the vicinity of main air- traffic routes; due to additional spreading effects contrails may contribute significantly to the total cloud cover. Continuous observational methods are used to study the formation of contrails in the subarctic setting of Fairbanks, Alaska. Since March of 2000 a contrail database has been established, which includes contrail characteristics, Federal Aviation Administration flight data, and atmospheric measurements derived from radiosonde ascents at Fairbanks International Airport. The contrail analysis is based on all-sky digital camera imagery and direct observations of aircrafts. Daily Overflights for Fairbanks, AK airspace.
