POPSThe Emperor's New Clothes? It was a branch of the French intelligence services that finally helped convince the U.S. government in 2004 that the bar codes were fake after they and the CIA commissioned another company to try to detect the messages and were unable to uncover anything. But by then Montgomery was already making headway with other software claims. His company got a contract with the Air Force to handle video shot by unmanned Predator drones. He claimed his program could recognize weapons in the surveillance video. In 2004 the U.S. Special Operations Command reportedly gave his company a $30 million no-bid contract for “compression” and “automatic target recognition” technology. Montgomery even got a security clearance. But a former worker told Playboy that he had helped fake some 40 demonstrations of the software.

POPSThe Challenge of Freedom Part I
a desperate struggle, conducted in the defiance of inevitable defeat. As a religious and spiritual people, we have a tendency to regard the triumph of the righteous as assured, and see victory as the destiny of virtue. The evidence of history says otherwise. No one would have given the American patriots winning odds at the outset of the Revolutionary War, fought against the most disciplined and well-equipped military force of the era, by men who marched through the snow in the tatters of disintegrating boots. Even patriotic Americans of today don’t always appreciate how special our achievement is… not just in its success, but its endurance. Most victorious “revolutions” end with a new class of slaves cleaning up the victory celebrations, beneath the whips of a new set of tyrants. As Binyon points out in his Times Online article, grisly regimes like North Korea remain in power, despite decades of poverty and manifest failure. The image of a lone, unarmed man standing against

POPSMilitary Working Dogs; Saving Lives on the Battlefield “These dogs are important because of the job they do for our military,” said Chirdon, who has been in the Marine Corps for more than six years. “They clear houses, roads and many other areas for our deployed military men and women. “Military working dogs are also very smart and, no matter how good technology is, a dog is always better. They also provide a huge psychological deterrent to enemies and stop many potentially bad situations before they even start. Nobody wants to be bit by a dog,” he said. Chirdon understands that facing ferocious attacks, hammering in constant commands and providing frequent praise will one day pay off with human lives saved on the battlefield. POPS Pee Wee Obama's Big Adventure
As a reference point when Bill Clinton went to Asia for a week in 2000, that trip alone cost $63 million for all of the necessities of a glutton White House. Don't think for a second that the gluttonous Obama's are saving one dime. I ask people to remember Ronald Reagan vacationing at the Reagan Ranch. I ask people to remember George H. W. Bush who vacationed Kennebunkport at his family house. I ask people to remember George W. Bush in vacationing at his Texas ranch. Those properties were all paid for and did not cost $40,000 in rent. These Republicans if you recall liked to ride horse in Reagan, fish in Bush 41 and Bush 43 liked running a chainsaw. All cheap entertainment. There was never any entourage of pigs in family and friends seeing who could suck an expensive vacation off the US taxpayers. All three of these Republican Presidents dealt with economic catastrophes and understood the value of every cent they were spending. Yet Obama rolls in and can't find

POPSOshkosh Award Raises Questions
Agree w/J. Gansler that job creation shouldn't be a criteria for Gov contracts--would result in labor intensive, inefficient bids (oink, oink!). BUT the DOD can't continue to ignore the drastic market shift over 20 years that has virtually destroyed the ability to conduct truly competitive bids for large contracts. Since Bill Perry's "Last Supper," we find only 1 company can build large acft, 2 or 3 can build satellites, 3 can build heavy duty trucks, etc. Budget realities mean that if a firm loses a big contract like this, the next opportunity may not come along for 5, 10, even 20 years. Few firms can afford to stay in the market on the hope that they'll win "next time." Unfortunately, the govies just don't get it, as evidenced in these 2 articles: http://www.thespacereview.com/article/1289/1 http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=aIrSOQpbzRfc I haven't seen serious discussion of structural causes, and acquisition strategies to combat them anywhere.

POPS“It’s a Catastrophe,” said a Member of the European Delegation But the agreement – reached in Friday night talks between Obama and leaders of China, India, South Africa and Brazil – was more notable for what it doesn’t accomplish than what it does, an inconvenient truth Obama ruefully acknowledged to reporters. He conceded that no more specific deal – much less a legally binding one – was possible until the issue of “trust” between industrialized and developing nations was resolved. The agreement contained none of the specific emissions targets European and African negotiators had hoped to nail down, simply a broad-brush promise by the countries in the room to cap the overall global temperature rise to two degrees Celsius and provide a written record of their planned reductions. It’s unclear how many nations, particularly poorer countries who felt shut out of the process, were included in the final deal or how they will vote if the deal is put to one.

POPSObama Flies to Junk Science Summit In Copenhagen – O-bow-ma Finds Someone To Bow To In Copenhagen After his brief, listless and cliché-ridden speech in Copenhagen that aired live on Morning Joe today, Pres. Obama makes the hand-shaking rounds on the podium. He continues the glad-handing off the podium, until he spots someone and breaks into . . . a bow . With all the mulling around, it's hard to determine exactly what's going on. It looks like he might have been exchanging bows with a man in the scrum surrounding him. But PBO's bow seemed to go beyond the perfunctory head-nod that in the circumstances surely would have satisfied, say, Japanese etiquette. NewsBusters http://bit.ly/5G65y7

POPS20 GOP Senators Call for Investigation of Offutt Threat Let’s be clear: the people spreading these falsehoods think nothing is wrong with a system under which families and businesses continue to bear the brunt of skyrocketing costs, insurance companies are allowed to discriminate and drop at will, and thousands of Americans lose their coverage every single day.” They protest a little too much. I do not know this story is "absolutely false." To the contrary, I'm confident it's true. Twenty senators are now calling for an investigation, and each is presumably pretty well sourced in the Senate. If the charges are "absolutely false," maybe the White House will encourage Senate Democrats to call this Republican bluff. I won't hold my breath. What is absolutely true is that the threat itself is clumsy. The Base Realignment and Closure Process won't get started again for a couple of years, and Offutt is a nearly irreplaceable piece of America's national security infrastructure.

POPSTeenage Gitmo Detainee Goes Free After 7 Years The Young Afghani may have been only 12 years old at time of capture. More below: "While in U.S. custody, Jawad was held in solitary confinement and subjected to Guantánamo’s infamous "frequent flyer" sleep deprivation program. He attempted suicide in December 2003 by repeatedly slamming his head against his cell wall. Two judges -- first his military commission judge, then a federal court judge -- ruled that evidence gleaned through Jawad’s torture and coercion was inadmissible. Despite all this, there’s hope for Jawad’s future, as his habeas co-counsel, Air Force Maj. David Frakt, told us in May

POPS Dems Threaten Nelson In Pursuit of 60 Indeed, Offutt is the headquarters for US Strategic Command, the successor to Strategic Air Command, and not by accident. STRATCOM was located in the middle of the country for strategic reasons. Its closure would be a massive blow to the economy of the state of Nebraska, but it would also be another example of this administration playing politics with our national security.

POPSTHUG-IN-CHIEF’s Extortion of America’s National Security
Nelson’s demand that taxpayer money not be used to fund abortion has still not been met. According to a Senate aide, the White House is now threatening to put Nebraska’s Offutt Air Force Base on the BRAC list if Nelson doesn’t fall into line. Offutt Air Force Base employs some 10,000 military and federal employees in Southeastern Nebraska. As our source put it, this is a “naked effort by Rahm Emanuel and the White House to extort Nelson’s vote.” They are “threatening to close a base vital to national security for what?” asked the Senate staffer. POPSGlenn Beck Interviews Mike Goldfarb About Extortion of Ben Nelson: Video
They are attempting to extort his vote for health care reform. It blows my mind that Nelson would take these threats lying down. Doesn’t the man have any principles? So what if the left smears him, that’s what the left does. The American people have a right to know that a Chicago gangster lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. This health care bill is a disaster. It’s a horrific piece of legislation that is going to destroy our health care system and bankrupt the nation. The fact that the administration has to resort to threats and extortion to get it passed speaks volumes about the bill itself. http://bit.ly/50c5yO Related Posts * Video: If you Oppose ObamaCare You Might Be A Racist * Video: Republicans To Read 2,000 Page Health Care Bill Aloud On House Floor * Audio: Progressives Discover Obama Is A ‘Charming Liar’ * Video: Meet The Obama ‘Dis-Disinformation Czar’ * Video: Father Of Handicapped Son Threatened After Town Hall Confrontation

POPS Code Red In Washington D.C. Today; “This bill must be stopped!”
Also: The Dems now expect the CBO scoring of the Reid plan that no one has seen to look good once the Medicare expansion is thrown under the bus. And: After all the sound and fury, Joe Lieberman is now reportedly on board with Demcare. Update: Heeeeere come’s MoveOn! Steamed at the Democrat majority over negotiating with Joe Lieberman, the nutroots will hold their own “emergency rally” today at 1pm Eastern today to lobby for nationalized health care. Wonder if unhinged Jane Hamsher will show up to burn Sen. Lieberman’s wife in effigy. Update 11:49am Eastern: Lieberman talking to press right now. Says Demcare plan is now “heading in the right direction.” GOP Sen. Susan Collins is standing by him, smiling, through his remarks. Ok, Susan Collins speaks. She can’t see voting for the bill in its current form. “It’s still too deeply flawed for me to support it.” She says she won’t support it even with amendments intended to improve the bill (that no one has seen, of course).

POPSUpdate: Dead Mount Hood Climber Succumbed to Hypothermia 2:35 p.m . Eight searchers who climbed the mountain this morning just returned on skis to Timberline's Wy'East Day Lodge. The searchers, all members of the Hood River-based Crag Rats, were in two areas: Illumination Saddle and south of Crater Rock. “We didn’t see anything,” said Tom Scully. With snow dripping off his boots, Scully said weather conditions were “pretty good,” but deteriorated in the afternoon. “We had to get off there pretty fast,” Scully said. 11:45 a.m. About a half-dozen members of the Air Force Reserve’s 304th Rescue Squadron are preparing to load into a Sno-Cat " a specially-designed vehicle that can travel on snow and ice " to be carried up to higher elevations on the mountain. A Blackhawk helicopter continues to hover over the top of Mount Hood. But a deputy with the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said this does not indicate that the chopper has found anything. “It’s just what they do,” the deputy said.

POPSPolice Cars by The Thousands Make Way to Officers' Memorial
The widow of a fallen Federal Way officer wanted everyone to know that the show of support has a profound impact on those inside those passing cars. "To know those people are there for you and to be in the front car is an experience that you just can't describe," said Renee Maher, whose husband Patrick was a Federal Way police officer shot and killed in the line of duty in 2003. "The energy is amazing and, people describe this as being mind-numbing, for me it was just the opposite. It was overwhelming because there was so many people there that were to honor Patrick, and I remember thinking, 'How can I thank them all for being here?' " As many as 20,000 people are expected to pack the Tacoma Dome for the 1 p.m. service. In addition to eulogies from family, friends and public officials, mourners will watch a video tribute to the officers who were killed by a lone gunman as they sat at a coffee shop before the start of their shift.
