POPSHowl of the unhinged is scary voice of America's "culture war"
More: The report provides troubling context for the outrageous behavior that has attended the election of our first African-American president. When you call them on that behavior, Barack Obama's detractors love to accuse you of equating dissent with racism. It is a specious argument. I disagree with the president's use of signing statements… but it would never occur to me to carry a sign vowing death to him, his wife and their "two stupid kids" as a protester in Maryland did, or to pray that Obama dies of brain cancer as a "minister" in Arizona does, or to heckle him during a joint session of Congress as Rep. Joe Wilson infamously did. That's not dissent. It is the howl of the unhinged and the entitled. The same folks who were complacent as President Bush spent surplus into deficit, wasted $600 billion dollars and 4,000 American lives on the wrong war, and watched a major American city drown are morally outraged because the new guy wants to reform health care?

POPSThe far right says Obama is bad for our kids
Wrong. I never imagined the outbreak of right-wing crazy that Obama's gesture would provoke, and this time it's hard not to see racism behind the hysteria. The message is "Obama's coming for our children!" the standard cry against scary boogeymen in every culture. I mean, really, what besides Obama's race could make him so scary to these people? That he's a Marxist socialist fascist Nazi? I'd argue that the only reason those extreme epithets have taken hold goes back to reason No. 1: Our first black president is provoking some outsize and irrational reactions. Especially since, as has now been well-documented, President George H.W. Bush addressed American students in 1991, and Ronald Reagan did so via C-SPAN in 1988. (Bush talked mainly about the importance of education, while Reagan hailed the benefits of low taxes and the line-item veto.) President George W. Bush appealed to "the children of the country" to back the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001, to no public crit

POPSThe Mysterious Nok Culture more ( at source): Breunig runs an excavation near the Nigerian highlands of Jos, where the mysterious Nok culture once blossomed. Spanning more than 80,000 square kilometers (31,000 square miles), the tropical region they lived in was larger than Ireland. Its inhabitants lived in wooden huts and ate porridge made from pearl millet. Some women subjected themselves to bloody "scar ornaments" scratched into their breasts with knives. And, as archaeologists imagine it, smoke hung in the air as people fired masterly terracotta creations in kilns heated to 700 degrees Celsius (1,300 degrees Fahrenheit).

POPSZimbabwean girl speaks out about rape, in captivity. A child rights activist, who asked not to be named, says the scale of the rape and abuse in the last few months has taken aid workers by surprise. "We have been caught unaware by this political crisis where women and girls are being abused and raped in the areas the ruling party has sealed off," she says. "These abuses should leave politicians hanging their heads in shame for not assisting their own mothers and sisters as is the norm in African culture." As the country heads for a second round of a presidential election on 27 June, the MDC says Maidei's case is not unique. "Pungwes" are gatherings held in the open where people are forced to sing revolutionary songs to prove their loyalty to the ruling party. Many residents are made to attend, including girls as young as 16 where, if they catch a commander's eye, they are kept at the base until the militia leave.

POPSDid White House Order FBI To "Back Off" Anti-Terror Investigations of Radicalized Muslim Converts? A disturbing aspect of the attack is that Muhammad had been brought to the FBI’s attention months ago , according to ABC News. Today's update from Stratfor Research describes the background of a recent attack on U.S. soldiers in Little Rock, Arkansas. One soldier was killed and another critically wounded by a lone gunman who began shooting from a pickup truck. Police quickly apprehended a suspect, Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, a 21-year-old African-American man and convert to Islam. In his vehicle, police recovered an SKS rifle and two handguns. Muhammad reportedly admitted to the shootings and claimed he had specifically targeted U.S. military personnel; he stated had more soldiers been in the parking lot, he would have shot them too. http://www.stratfor.com/weekly/20090603_lone_wolf_lessons

POPSTime to end Black History Month? Can we just teach American History (the real version) and stop making PC points that over-reach? I just spent 2 1/2 wks working on a project about Louis Armstrong (required) with my G-son. Now, Mr. Armstrong was a great cornet, jazz musician. So? Reality...I'm not special, you're not special, no one is special....unless they live their lives in a way that benefits other human beings. And I think most all of us do that to some extent everyday. Make it an elective course in school.

POPSRacial Evolution of Porgy and Bess
Gershwin’s play Porgy and Bess, inadvertently highlights the tensions between the races through the decades. This article chronicles how this genius work of art affected American society during its journey to the ultimate goal of “ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL”. Now that America has succeeded in its struggle to finally cross the barrier of racial divide (once called equal but separate) and elect an African American as its top executive and commander in chief, a look back at this poignant and beautiful work seems apropos. The music in this opera will forever be remembered and embraced by any who possess the almost magical ability to empathize with other creatures of existence. Once heard you'll never forget songs like, IT AIN’T NECESSARILY SO http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/g/george_gershwin/it_aint_necessarily_so.html and SUMMERTIME http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/g/george_gershwin/summertime.html Thanks to http://delanceyplace.blogspot.com/ for bringing this to my attention.

They feel a threat from people of color? or want to deny them an existence in their society? well it just doesn't quite work like that. your chickens have finally come home.
