POPSShould IT let users bring their own laptops and smartphones? [podcast]
I an an unqualfies advocate of this approach. I distinctly remember falling in "lust" while at university, back in the 1960's, to the point that I joined a computer company when I graduated, instead of using my engineering degree. After all, to was the only way I was going to get access to a $10,000,000 "mainframe". Then, in the 1990's, I stopped working for "large" companies and went out on my own. My friends at that time were complaining that their IT departments were not providing them with the right tools to make them productive, so they'd just get "payback" out of being less productive. They reacted with disdain to my suggestion that they should just buy their own equipment so they could accomplish and contribute more. Last year, I found myself using identical desktops at home and work, as well as a laptop while commuting and traveling. In retrospect, I spent a lot of time "applying updates"! Now, I have one laptop that I plug into a set of "desktop" peripherals

POPSNPO | Praise for Obama for education boosts
BLOGGER | http://huffingtonpost.twi.bz/B | James M. Gentile, PhD., is president of Research Corporation for Science Advancement, a foundation dedicated to science since 1912 and the second-oldest foundation in the United States (after the Carnegie Corporation). Research Corporation for Science Advancement is a leading advocate for the sciences and a major funder of scientific innovation and of research in America’s colleges and universities. ___ "President Barack Obama took another crucial step last week in galvanizing support - from government, business, higher education, and philanthropy - to dramatically improve the teaching of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in U.S. public schools. Numerous studies have shown that American students are not keeping up with competitors in these fields, which have been so crucial to U.S. economic leadership in the past century." As The Washington Post recently reported, "International math testing in 2007 found that U.S.

POPSA Shining Example of True Advocacy This is a true advocate. No blowing and puffing about her accomplishments, no bully tactics with lawmakers and shelter personnel, just an honest, quiet advocacy truly helping victims where they need it....in their own homes. I'm impressed and thank God for those who work like she does, with heart.

POPSNew Jersey Turns Down Gay Marriage Bill; Rhode Island Legislature Owns Anti-Gay Gov. Since these days the right-wing, looney fringe seems so fond of referring to President Obama as a Socialist, Marxist "monster" (I've read this repeatedly in articles and comments over the past few weeks), I thought I'd highlight an example of a real political monster - Gov. Donald Carcieri of Rhode Island. Folks, if the government can step in an tell you that you cannot take possession of your deceased partner's remains, then it truly can do anything. To my way of thinking, this is an outrageous assault on personal and familial privacy.

POPSCrooked Climatologists Drop “Cold” Weather Stations In A Year Absent any public statement from climatolgists for such a strange act, I can only speculate that this a deliberate attempt to cause an artificial warming of the data set. I can think of no other valid scientific reason. Would someone please ask GCHN to make a public statement as to why they tried to secretly “lose” weather stations when surely more data is better than less? POPSSam Harris vs Karen 'I love Islam' Armstrong " And how could we have been so foolish as to connect the apparently inexhaustible supply of martyrs in the Muslim world to the Islamic doctrine of martyrdom? In my own defense, let me say that I do get spooked whenever Western Muslims advocate the murder of apostates (as 36 percent of Muslim young adults do in Britain). But I now know that these freedom-loving people just "want to see God reflected more clearly in public life." I will call my friend Ayaan Hirsi Ali at once and encourage her to come out of hiding: Come on out, dear. Karen says the coast is clear. As it turns out, those people who have been calling for your murder don't understand Islam any better than we do. "

POPSWhat Happens When the Microbes That Keep Us Healthy Disappear? "When antibiotics were first introduced, they were miraculous drugs—and they still are," Blaser says. "But it really wasn't fully considered that antibiotics select for resistance." And an antibiotic will not only impact the infection it is targeted for. "It will select for resistance across the microbiome," he added. Blaser doesn't call for abandoning a whole class of effective drugs, but he does advocate for a better understanding of the potential trade-offs—even if we might not yet have all the answers. "I don't think anyone was putting that trade-off on the plate," says Blaser, who notes that both doctors and patients should reserve antibiotic use to cases where they are necessary.

POPSBlue State Governors Cry Foul Over Health Care Bill “When asked for my support, I was assured that federal legislation would not increase costs to California or include new unfunded mandates,” Schwarzenegger wrote. “Unfortunately, under nearly every scenario we can predict, the federal health care reform legislation being debated would cost California’s General Fund an additional $3 billion to $4 billion annually.” ….. Arnold’s already looking for a bailout from Uncle Sam. They loved Porkulus, but it’s not going to help them now. The sad thing is, it’s doubtful either one of them has anything against government takeover of health care. They just don’t want it passed onto their state budgets.
