Some Odd Facts from the Animal World
Stumblerz
by Stumblerz  11-12-2009
Which animal grows the maximum from birth to adulthood? Though a male kangaroo can be about 7 ft. tall and weigh 90 kg, at birth they are about 2 cm tall and weigh a few grams only! After birth, the baby has to climb about 6 inches along the furs of its mother’s abdomen to reach the edge of the pouch and enter into it. It is equivalent to a human baby climbing about 10 ft.! The infant kangaroo is suckled inside its mother’s pouch, where it completes its development to emerge when it weighs more than a kg.

Children Who Suffered Bullying Are More Likely To Develop Psychotic Symptoms In Early Adolescence
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-28-2009
A study including 6,437 early adolescents with an average age of 12.9 was carried out by Andrea Schreier, Ph.D., and his colleagues of The Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick, Coventry, England. The children participated in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Questionnaires were regularly sent by mail to parents concerning their child's physical condition and progress since birth. Beginning at the age of seven, the children were submitted to physical and psychological evaluations on a yearly basis. During the yearly visits, they were rated by skilled interviewers on whether during the preceding six months they had experienced hallucinations, delusions, thought disorders or any other psychotic symptoms. Peer victimization is defined as harmful actions and unfair treatment by one or several other students with purpose to harm. Children, parents and teachers were required to account on whether the child had suffered such oppression.

Finally a Consumer Fights Back.
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  10-5-2009
Although, I don’t relate to this woman's belief system, I DO relate to her as a consumer. All of us who have struggled with credit card debt and job losses know the frustrations of climbing a greased pole. The banks have been putting the screws to us for a long time. As a child, I would hear adults talking about LOAN SHARKS. On TV there were stories of bones being broken for non-payment by such LOAN SHARKS who charged exorbitant interest fees. I was glad to find out, this technique was illegal and US banks could never resort to such tactics to coerce payment. In adulthood, I learned quickly, that there were legal procedures of torture, no physical bone breaking but just as vexing. In Capitalism, the torture is mental and longer lasting. Today’s banks use teaser loans to lure us, once we’re captured by their come-ons they pounce and raise the APR's so high, that there is no escape from debt. I salute this lady who didn't take it lying down! She threw a few punches back!

Maybe it's because I was up til 6:30am this morning doing really tedious and nerdy stuff. Maybe it's because I haven't had enough coffee today. And also I'm debating not smoking any cigarettes today. In any case, I couldn't have any less respect for psychiatry than I do at this precise moment. Kthxbye.

Batterers Don't Just Appear
ljsdesign
by ljsdesign  9-26-2009
Read The Whole Article Kids need to learn to respect each other when they are young and bring that attitude forward to adulthood. They need to understand that the loud, obnoxious people who always seem to get the laughs get tiresome. The respectful people are more and more in demand as they grow older. Kids need to understand that the way to a better life is not by bullying and dominating others, but by being a part of their lives, sharing the good and difficult times.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder
ljsdesign
by ljsdesign  9-26-2009
Definition By Mayo Clinic staff Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance and a deep need for admiration. They believe that they're superior to others and have little regard for other people's feelings. But behind this mask of ultra-confidence lies a fragile self-esteem, vulnerable to the slightest criticism. Narcissistic personality disorder is one of several types of personality disorders. Personality disorders are conditions in which people have traits that cause them to feel and behave in socially distressing ways, limiting their ability to function in relationships and in other areas of their life, such as work or school. In particular, narcissistic personality disorder is characterized by dramatic, emotional behavior, in the same category as histrionic, antisocial and borderline personality disorders. Narcissistic personality disorder treatment is centered around psychotherapy.

Infant pain, adult repercussions
dopesick
by dopesick  9-25-2009
Continuation: To test this hypothesis, LaPrairie and Murphy gave adult animals that were injured at the time of birth a drug called naloxone. This drug blocks the actions of endogenous opioids. After animals received an injection of naloxone, they behaved just like an uninjured animal. The scientists then focused on the periaqueductal gray region to see if inflammation at birth altered the natural opioid protein expression in this brain region. Using a variety of anatomical techniques, the investigators showed that animals that were injured at birth had endogenous opioid levels that were two times higher than normal. While it's beneficial to decrease pain sensitivity in some cases, it's not good to be completely resilient to pain. ------------------------------------------- Wow, I had now idea of that. The feeling of pain fascinates me. It's just so interesting how important it is and to think how it works... Sometimes we may not even pay attention to it, but many of

Veteran psychiatrist calls liberals mentally ill
jay8h
by jay8h  8-30-2009
"Dr. Rossiter says the liberal agenda preys on weakness and feelings of inferiority in the population by: * creating and reinforcing perceptions of victimization; * satisfying infantile claims to entitlement, indulgence and compensation; * augmenting primitive feelings of envy; * rejecting the sovereignty of the individual, subordinating him to the will of the government. "The roots of liberalism – and its associated madness – can be clearly identified by understanding how children develop from infancy to adulthood and how distorted development produces the irrational beliefs of the liberal mind," he says. "When the modern liberal mind whines about imaginary victims, rages against imaginary villains and seeks above all else to run the lives of persons competent to run their own lives, the neurosis of the liberal mind becomes painfully obvious."

6 New Insights on Sleep
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  8-21-2009    1
While the rest of the world runs full speed, we still live in a very primitive body, within which resides a biological clock that influences the activity of every single cell. Blood sugar, hormone levels, metabolic rates, body temperature, sodium/potassium levels, and immune function are just a few of the things directly linked to the body's internal clock. Altering your biological clock can have a drastic impact on your health. One important factor that helps determine the amount of sleep a person needs nightly is stage of life. Newborns sleep an average of 16 to 18 hours a day. Teenagers need at least 8.5 hours while most adults need around 8 hours to function well. Contrary to the popular belief, the need for sleep does not decline with old age. While the elderly do find that their slumber becomes more fitful, they continue to need about the same amount of sleep that they needed in early adulthood. For this reason, older people tend to nap often during the day.

The Catholic Church has always been in love with power Ironic........Pope during ww2 turned a blind eye to the horrors of nazi germany and holocaust. I swear I remember reading from multiple source including his own autobiography that the current pope was in Hitlers youth brigade and luftwaffe (Air Force) as an assistant something or other. Info...that is true

Pope Points to Saints who Conquered 'Hell on Earth' of Nazi Camps
foxyarse

"The Nazi concentration camp – noted Pope Benedict - as every death camp, can be considered an extreme symbol of evil, of the hell that comes to earth when man forgets God, and when He is replaced, usurping from Him the right to decide what is good and what is evil, to give life or to take life. Unfortunately, this phenomenon is not confined to the death camp. It is rather the culmination of an extensive and widespread reality of often nebulous boundaries. " This reality is precisely the antithesis that became clear at the end of the second millennium, "the opposition between atheistic humanism and Christian humanism, between holiness and nihilism”. "On the one hand - continued the pope - there are philosophies and ideologies, but also on an increasing scale ways of thinking and acting, which extol the freedom of man as the only principle, as an alternative to God, and thus transform man into a god, whose system behaviour is of an arbitrary nature. On the other hand, we note th

If you happened to have an open, white or red shallow sores in your mouth and had taken a lemon juice or an orange juice – Gesusss – Ouch! – You know how painful canker sores are but you are not alone. About one out of five people are getting into these and occur among adolescence and young adulthood. Opposite of what others believed canker sores are not contagious (thank god) so you can’t spread the sores by kissing someone or sharing foods.
