POPSNASA Peculiar Thermometer: Painting By Numbers ..10 second video...UAH Satellite Temperatures March, 2008 - looks cool Not surprisingly, the missing areas in Canada and Africa were cold. The NASA data thus becomes disproportionately weighted towards warm areas - particularly in the northern hemisphere. As can be seen in the UAH satellite map above, the warm areas actually made up a relatively small percentage of the planet. The vast majority of the earth had normal temperatures or below. Given that NASA has lost track of a number of large cold regions, it is understandable that their averages are on the high side. Additionally, NASA reports their global temperature measurements within one one-hundredth of a degree. This is a classic mathematics error, since they have no data from 20 per cent of the earth's land area. The reported precision is much greater than the error bar - a mistake which has caused many a high school student to fail their exams.

POPSWho gets to determine the "right" climate for the Earth? As technology evolves, if we are to dodge global disaster(s), there comes a time when, as a specie, we will have to assume greater and greater responsibility regarding issues that till lately were decided for us by the arbitrary forces of nature. We stand no chance of a sane future unless we accept total responsibility for this planet and all its sentient and sub sentient inhabitants. This is to my mind the greatest challenge of the future.

POPSTeeth Gritted It hurts us so much in the rural areas. We have to drive everywhere. I drive about 32 miles a day to work alone. There is no way I can ride a bicycle that length of miles, and there is no good public transport here. Of course I could buy a motorcycle but that's only good for a small seasonal portion of the year. I have noticed that elderly people just aren't driving and the cost of groceries is just as hurtful.

POPSDesign and the Elastic Mind Design and the Elastic Mind explores the reciprocal relationship between science and design in the contemporary world by bringing together design objects and concepts that marry the most advanced scientific research with attentive consideration of human limitations, habits, and aspirations. The exhibition highlights designers’ ability to grasp momentous changes in technology, science, and history—changes that demand or reflect major adjustments in human behavior—and translate them into objects that people can actually understand and use. This Web site presents over three hundred of these works, including fifty projects that are not featured in the gallery exhibition.
