They do the same thing with human food. I love K. Trudeau's "Natural Cures..." advice -- If it comes from a publicly traded company, don't buy it. (Of course that almost precludes shopping in grocery stores)

non-drug options for ADHD - but they leave out the most effective one
Lexica
by Lexica  6-17-2008
Sadly, they neglect to mention the most effective non-drug treatment for ADHD/ADD: exercise . John Ratey, MD, associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, studies how exercise affects the brain -- in particular, how it affects people with ADHD. See the articles on his website for more information, or take a look at this article for an overview of what he's found. Personally, given a choice between "take this medication which may or may not help your condition and by the way you'll have to deal with the side effects which can be nasty" and "go for a two-mile run", I'll take the run. It's cheaper, better for me, and a lot more enjoyable.

Gore Ducks Questions About Food Crisis, Ethanol And Climate Alarmism
merrie
by merrie  4-27-2008    1
Isn't that dandy? The person that cast the deciding vote in 1994 beginning ethanol mandates, who has been traveling the world advocating biofuels, and even admitted in March 2008 to having investments in biofuel companies, wasn't available to discuss the food crisis and its relationship to ethanol. Maybe this is why Gore isn't allowing press members into his speeches. Regardless, the pressure is mounting, and as more media outlets begin seeking his opinion concerning this matter, it seems a metaphysical certitude he won't be able to hide forever. Stay tuned.

Nanotech in food poses unknown risks
pokkets
by pokkets  3-11-2008
There are barriers between the us and outside world in the skin, between the digestive system and the bloodstream, and organs. The most crucial barrier, is the 'blood - brain' barrier which for example will only let molecules, such as sugars have access to the brain. one of the effects of this is the prevention of larger molecules, and particularly things like germs and viruses entering the brain, which cannot deal with the inflammation that is caused by the immune system fighting an invader. Nanoparticles in food can be of an unspecified size, and so there is the possibility, that they will go places they should not be, and are in fact dangerous. Some of the reasons food companies haven't tested, are that tests are expensive, they don't want to go looking for a problem with their new 'wonder' product in case they find something that is dangerous or that the public doesn't like, or because it didn't occur to them there was a danger. These days that's unlikely and certainly no excuse.

5 things you should eat before you die?
tyronebcookin
by tyronebcookin  10-26-2007
The education, process, and knowledge behind the slaughter is whats beneficial towards appreciating food...isn't that why we shout, wine, and cry over the outrageous facts we find out about processed food and soy product substitutes being mixed in with our 'Big Burger' at the fast food restaurants? Or the additives, preservatives, handling, and/or lack of taste from buying our meat at the grocery store? Of course you can feel a sense of pride, accomplishment, and/or achievement over catching, killing, and preparing your own food; MEAT or VEGETABLE. Because you have brought it full circle. It should taste better because you have been there for every step of the process, the finished meal was your creation, you do not have any questions about the practices of how it got to your plate...you have replaced the uncertainty of the dish with complete knowledge of what it takes to get it to the table. Ever had Iguana? I wish I had left it alive...its better as a pet, or free running lizar

Getting out of a Jam with Jellies
neochonetes
by neochonetes  10-1-2007    1
Kiminori Ushida and his team have found a viable component that can harvested from jellyfish. Dr. Ushida is right in stating that the cleanup of the jellyfish must be economically feasible, or the fisherman, who are the most vulnerable to the damage caused by the overpopulation of jellyfish populations, will not be able to live or keep their boats. I think this has positive environmental and economic applications all over the world where jellyfish populations are on the rise.

Plant based plastic - No more Wars for Oil.
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  9-19-2007    6
More: Plant based plastics provide an alternative to conventional plastics, especially for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), that relies heavily on extremely toxic feedstocks and additives that have devastating impacts on our health and environment through their production, use and disposal. Many of the chemicals used in PVC production are linked to cancer, birth defects, reproductive harm, and a host of other health problems. In contrast, biobased plastics are generated using renewable materials by converting plants such as corn into plastic. The production of bioplastics can help contribute to rural economic development, providing a steady income for farmers. It also uses fewer fossil fuels compared to petrochemical plastics, even after accounting for the fuel needed to plant and harvest the corn or other feedstocks.
