POPSA historian's account of Democrats and Bush-era war crimes
What made those detainee photographs so important from the start is that they depict brutal abuse well outside of the Abu Ghraib facility and thus reveal to Americans -- and the world -- that America's torture was not, as they've been constantly told, limited to rogue sadists at Abu Ghraib and the waterboarding of three bad guys. Instead, our torture regime was systematic, pervasive, brutal, fatal, and -- becuase it was the by-product of conscious policies set at the highest levels of government -- common across America's "War on Terror" detention regime. These photographs would have documented those vital facts; combated the false denials from torture apologists; fueled the momentum for accountability; and revealed, in graphic and unavoidable terms, what was truly done by America's government. But a Democratic-led Congress, at the urging of a Democratic President, is now taking extraordinary steps -- including a new law which has no purpose other than to suppress evidence of Americ

POPSLibs Finally See Bush Admin Prosecuted for "Torture" [FICTIONAL] Oh hell, more liberal porn. Libs should also consider prosecuting America's 43rd president for directly liberating more people (over 60 million) from tyranny than any leader since Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Or how about we prosecute him for saving millions of lives in Africa and for asking the Congress to commit $15 billion over five years ... to turn the tide against AIDS in the most afflicted nations of Africa and the Caribbean? Sound good to you libs? Dream on fools.

POPSNeocon Judge's History of Cover-ups In the 1980s, Silberman played behind-the-scenes roles in helping Ronald Reagan gain the White House; he helped formulate hard-line intelligence policies; he encouraged right-wing media attacks on liberals; and he protected the flanks of Reagan’s operatives who were caught breaking the law.

POPS"Democrat-Media Complex" “The unorthodox roll-out was orchestrated to protect James and Hannah,” said Breitbart. “The moment that their peril ended, was when Jon Stewart reported on this, making fun of the media for missing the story. At that moment I called James and Hannah and said, “You’re mostly in the clear, and the only people left who’ll attack you will be some liberal bloggers.’” Breitbart knows something about liberal bloggers. His pre-BigGovernment career included many months working to launch The Huffington Post. (He had been a researcher for Arianna Huffington in the early 1990s, before he joined Drudge, when both of them were still conservatives.) “I wanted the world to see what the Left and the Los Angeles/Manhattan salons had to think about national politics,” Breitbart told TWI. “Sunlight is the best disinfectant. I thought it would be great for Arianna and I thought it would be great for the right, because it gave them source material.”

POPSU.S. Forces Didn't Really Hurt Anyone in Iraq: Reuters rewrites history What's more, Iraqis, according to Reuters, don't have a beef with our decision to invade their country, or the fact that we dropped more munitions on them than the allied totals for World War I. It was, you know, Abu Ghraib ... While many Iraqis were grateful Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein was ousted, some dark chapters in the U.S. occupation, such as the sexual humiliation of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison, fueled broad resentment. Take-away: this never happened. This stuff is ubiquitous in our reporting, and will help make the next senseless war possible with minimal dissent.

POPSSmartRemarks: "Buttocks or Bullets?" In 2004 six men were arrested for stripping down to their thongs and mooning President Bush, mirroring the infamous Abu Ghraib human pyramid photo. They were cuffed and arrested. And the right wing was OUTRAGED and the disrespect shown to the president. What are we to make of the armed "patriots" showing up to town halls where the President is speaking, holding signs calling for the "Tree of Liberty" to be washing " with the blood of patriots and tyrants ? What message are they sending? One John Wilkes Boothe (Lincoln's assassin) and John Hinckley (Reagan's would-be assassin) would understand loud & clear. The right wing loses an election, and out come the guns and threats and cries of "oppression!" This should be no surprise. They've been shooting and bombing abortion doctors for decades. I'm watching for shrines to St. Timothy of Oklahoma to show up.

POPSFormer GOP Congressmen Accuse Republicans Of Putting Party Above Constitution Edwards was even more critical. He mocked members of Congress when it came to flexing their constitutional oversight authority. In particular, he lamented the House Republican lawmakers' unified opposition to holding hearings to investigate the firing of U.S. Attorneys by the Bush White House. "One of the most shocking things was when the House voted to hold Miers and Bolten in contempt because they refused to obey a congressional subpoena," said Edwards. "Every single member of my party, except for three, walked out. Members of Congress walked out of the chamber rather than stand up as members of Congress so that congressional subpoena (would) be obeyed. Party trumped Constitution."

POPSAt least 100 people tortured TO DEATH by American forces Since WWII enemies on the battlefield have surrendered to American troops because they believed they would be treated humanely and not abused by the Americans in uniform. This was true as recently as Iraq 1.0. We used to be the good guys. Now? We're a nation of laws. We can't just sweep dozens of murders due to White House-approve torture and have any sort of moral legitimacy internationally beyond that of an armed thug. I think this country is better than that.

POPSHold Your Applause for OBAMA The brutal reality of expanding foreign occupation and harsher and harsher forms of control are the tinder of Islamic fundamentalism, insurgences and terrorism. We can blame the violence on a clash of civilizations. We can naively tell ourselves we are envied for our freedoms. We can point to the Koran. But these are fantasies that divert us from facing the central dispute between us and the Muslim world, from facing our own responsibility for the virus of chaos and violence spreading throughout the Middle East. We can have peace when we shut down our bases, stay the hand of the Israelis to create a Palestinian state, and go home, or we can have long, costly and ultimately futile regional war. We cannot have both.

POPSThe Abu Ghraib We Cannot See "Photographs can’t show us that the real bad apples were at the top of the civilian chain of command in Washington, but that is what we need to know — or, rather, since we’ve known it and gone along with it for a long time, that is what we need to come to terms with now.

POPSWhy the Caged Bird Sings What is he up to? 1) he truly believes that torture actually works and that using it doesn’t dehumanize the user 2) he is defending the legacy of an administration he ran single-handedly for eight years 3) since he is no longer in the WH he can now speak as freely as he wants So he is either 1) selling himself to the GOP because, you know, once you have tasted power you don’t want to give it up. Or, 2) as the author states, he is scared of the public damnation that will come out against him if the public learns the extent of the barbarism that took place at Abu Ghraib. So, from his point of view, waterboarding is very minor in comparison to what he ordered take place there. Which means Obama has now allowed himself to become a party to the disgrace that has been brought upon the U.S. by simply refusing to prosecute.
