Ah, we saved the best for last.... Yes, if you have not guessed what number one is by now I have this to say: Did you see ANY movies in the early to mid 90s when this one started the new Dinosaur craze? We even had to endure Brendan Fraser as Encino Man due to this one! By now I am sure you know Michael Crichton's Magnum Opus is number one. and no, it is NOT Congo! Enjoy!

Osama Bin Laden Suspect 'We Can't Kick Out' Is Freed
merrie
by merrie  7-7-2008
U was arrested trying to fly out to Saudi Arabia on false passports and was due to be extradited to America before US prosecutors dropped the case. Judges at the Special Immigration Appeals Commission have ruled there were "credible grounds" for believing MI5's claims. The conditions are being kept top secret but MI5 and police successfully argued he should not be allowed to live in London. The town in which he lives and any details which could lead to him being identified are also being kept secret. U will have to wear an electronic tag and is banned from using the internet or a mobile phone after refusing to turn his back on extremism.

60th anniversary: BERLIN Blockade / Airlift
righthand
by righthand  6-27-2008    2
Something BIG that Americans really could be proud of ... if only. It is ironic now that the great BLOCKADE BUSTERS of 1948 are now the principles in the implementation of a similar BLOCKADE of Gaza, supporting THE fascist Zionist power! Now Russia is a reluctant co-conspirator with the US, the EU and UN party to this pending atrocity against the democratically elected power.

Intergenerational School: Empowers Elderly to Stay Active
urbanlife
by urbanlife  6-17-2008    5
K-6th school in Cleveland welcomes volunteers in their 80s & 90s, some with Alzheimer's or dementia. The founders believe volunteering gives the elderly a sense of purpose and happiness, as well as many health benefits. TIS fosters an educational community of excellence that provides experiences and skills for life-long learning and spirited citizenship for learners of all ages. TIS encourages communities to create new environments that empower learners of all ages, as they become life-long contributors to a society. TIS incorporates community volunteers into the life of the school. Volunteers perform a variety of tasks from painting and setting up classrooms to mentoring young readers and writers. TIS is a free public school. Founder of TIF, Peter Whitehouse, believes when some people are diagnosed with Alzheimer's, they feel shame and withdraw themselves from society, so engagement is necessary for older people who have aging-associated cognitive challenges.

Big Brown's Stunning Belmont Loss
merrie
by merrie  6-8-2008
and needed to be cooled off with buckets of water and sprayed with hoses after they ran. Co-owner Michael Iavarone said Big Brown had a thorough examination after the race and again Sunday morning. "There's nothing physically that's shown up," he said, speaking by cell phone from his daughter's soccer game on Long Island. "I'm as confused as anybody. The only thing we're resorting to right now is the track might have been too deep for him and he didn't like it out there." Iavarone said Big Brown's problem feet, other than a loose left hind shoe, were not an issue. "We're perplexed," he said. "Nobody can figure this one out." Without any obvious answers, it might take blood work and diagnostic testing, including X-rays, to figure out Big Brown's poor performance.

The Oracle of $200 Oil
Joshua Zumbrun
by Joshua Zumbrun  5-21-2008    2
Goldman Sachs made headlines with his prediction of oil as high as $200 a barrel. What does this mean? $6 a gallon at the pump. Is this rapidly becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy? The somewhat breathless coverage here reminds me of an old parable from the 90s. An analyst named Henry Blodget predicted in 1998 that Amazon.com stock would hit $400 (when it was currently trading at $250ish). In a frenzy, Amazon hit it within a month. Of course, it went on to collapse spectacularly in 2000. A decade later, Amazon's never returned to trading at that level...

Lexicographical Longing
carrerinyes

in the Dictionary of Sailors’ Slang.) Before the cooling in the ’90s of America’s passion for colossal encyclopedia sets (bought from door-to-door salesmen), and well before the advent of massless Wikipedia.org and Dictionary.com, the navy blue compact O.E.D. was part of the standard décor of a bookish middle-class life. I was overjoyed to have one of my own. Furthermore, my other totemic college books — “Speculum of the Other Woman,” “Reading Black, Reading Feminist” and “Sexuality in the Field of Vision” — could go out of style, maybe; the O.E.D. was forever. Wasn’t it? No.

The Billy Letters

Bill, Greetings. Received your letter. Glad to hear my letter to you in '99 made a difference. When do you graduate? Yeah, get me a subscription to Radar Magazine. What is it about? Know any Asian girls willing to correspond? Send pictures. You can photocopy 5 on 1 page or send 'em singular. Nothing scenic though. Send some of girls in bikinis. Do you go clubbing? Seen any good movies? Saw 3:10 to Yuma the other day. It was an OK Western. Didn't do too good at the box office though. Do you have family? I'm youngest of five. That's all for now. Take it E/Z write when you get a chance. Your friend, Richard

Stroke the Rich
sahara
by sahara  4-25-2008    3
The IRS has become a subsidy system for super-wealthy Americans IRS winks at rich deadbeats. Because the news media focus on what politicians say about the tax system, rather than how it actually operates, few Americans realize that: -- Corporate income tax laws reward companies that move jobs offshore, allowing them to earn untaxed profits as long as the money stays offshore. -- Widespread cuts in health insurance and pensions for the rank-and- file are driven by a special law that lets top executives defer paying taxes for years, in a way that adds 35 percent to the cost of their bloated pay. -- The 2001 Bush tax cuts included a stealth tax increase on the middle class and upper-middle class that will cost them a half trillion dollars in the first 10 years and, for 35 million families, wiping out part or all of their Bush tax cuts. -- The stealth tax boost on people making $30,000 to $500,000 was explicitly used to make sure that the super rich would get their entire Bush tax
