POPSHiding the significance of Houston electing an openly gay Mayor The truth is this: Houston's mayoral seat was held by a Democrat before, and a Republican didn't even have a snowball's chance of winning it this time around ... All the cities of Texas voted for John Kerry in 2004 and Barack Obama in 2008. It's not that Texas isn't dominated by conservatives on a statewide level. It absolutely is. But narratives about the conservative monolith are not only unfair, but they have the potential to create long-term damage, too. If the liberal presence in Texas is ignored and written off, it won't get the support and the hope it needs to keep plugging. And right now, as the state's demographics start to move more towards urbanity and racial diversity, liberals need all the support they can get to seize the moment and turn the traditionally red state blue . Demographic trend across the United States: Republicans only win in white-dominated rural and suburban areas. Read clip in full @ source

POPS“We can only turn the page from recession to recovery if we....." “at the very top of the food chain.” Then he actually said: “We can only turn the page from recession to recovery if we watch every single taxpayer dollar the way families watch every dollar in their budget.” Yes, the senator majority leader who pushed through $700 Billion in TARP spending, a $787 Billion Porkulus, a $410 Billion spending bill with 9000 earmarks… deigns to lecture Republicans on fiscal responsibility.

POPSUSA: Panel votes to restore abstinence education money Late last night, Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) pushed through an amendment in the Senate Finance Committee authorizing $50 million in funding for abstinence-only programs as part of Health Care Reform- despite over 10 years of evidence that these programs do not work. By a razor-thin vote of 12-11, the Senators on the Finance Committee gave conservative ideology a victory over science and common sense. See ↗ Advocates For Youth .

POPSFlashback: Democrats defeated GOP amendment to bar illegals from receiving ObamaCare This is the big question all over the web today. Are illegals covered under ObamaCare? The answer is most assuredly yes. Had the Democrats wanted to bar illegals, they all would have voted yes on Rep. Heller's amendment. And they didn't. Now we know why Rep. Wilson shouted from the floor of the House, "You lie!" He was probably remembering that very vote.

POPSIt Took The Republicans 7 Years To Do What The Dems Have Done In 7 Months . . . P'Off The Independent Center
Once they went down this path, they’re going all in here, and you can’t take that bet back.” Couldn’t agree more. The public option made it into too many versions in the House to snuff out without a backlash from the fanatical left. But the realization that we could be heading towards the disaster which is the UK’s and Canada’s crumbling ‘public options’ has woken up the electorate and they will have nothing of it. And it always comes back to how to pay for it, and that sets the target clearly on seniors and their rising ranks of health care consumers. Our naive President let this whole mess get out of control. He did not lead and establish a baseline, he let the wing nuts in Congress run amok, and he got the result he deserves. If anyone is serious about health care reform they will junk the current abominations from the left wing and produce something palatable to the nation. It may not save the Democrats from the voter backlash, but it sure will lessen the backlash

POPS1,201 Page Climate Change Bill HR 2454 Not Read or Debated Not Voting were: Jeff Flake, AZ-6 John Sullivan OK-1 Constitutents of Jeff Flake may wish to inquire why he was not able to vote today. Cong. Sullivan was on one month’s leave for treatment of an alcohol addiction. It’s interesting to note that Cong. Patrick Kennedy (D-MA) was taken out of alcohol rehab for the purposes of voting. Dems apparently felt passing this bill was more important, or perhaps more doable, than sobering up a Kennedy. 300 Page Amendment to 1200 Page Bill Added at 3:09AM

POPSCap and Trade Swindle Passes House by 7 Votes One could say that a lack of Republican unity was responsible for the bill’s passage. Had the tiny minority of Republican congressmen who voted in favor of the bill abstained, or voted no, the bill would have failed. The cap and trade bill will now move to the U. S. Senate for their consideration. If it passes there, it’s on its way to becoming law by the stroke of President Obama’s pen. Far more Democrats voted against the bill than Republicans voted for it, which is telling in a broad sense when considered in light of the wishes of the American electorate " most of whom oppose this bill." http://www.senate.gov/ Take Action: The bill’s next stop is the U. S. Senate. Contact your Senator now and urge a ‘No” vote on the Cap and Tax Swindle.

POPSSenate Approves Stimulus Republicans, true to form, continued bitching about how much the whole thing cost. Expect them not to give a damn about cost when the debate over Iraq withdrawal starts. “We’re taking an enormous risk — an enormous risk — with other people’s money,” Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the minority leader, said in urging his Republican colleagues to vote against the measure. Mr. McConnell said the package was “full of waste” and could only be counted on to increase the nation’s debt. Senator Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, the ranking Republican on the Finance Committee, said the final cost of the bill could exceed $1 trillion, counting interest, and burden future generations of taxpayers. “Not a pretty fiscal picture,” Mr. Grassley said, “and it’s going to get a lot uglier as a result of this bill.” The Iraq invasion is going to cost us $3 trillion before all is said and done. As always, Republicans are completely shameless in their hypocrisy.

POPSPoll taken: Impeach Bush These are indeed frightening times in which we live. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of American complacency.
