10:10 - The time for action
JICWyllie
by JICWyllie  1-1-2010
If people cut 10 per cent CO2 emissions a year for five years ... I wonder whether the first 10 per cent is the most difficult, and it then becomes easier. Or is it the other way around? Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this kind of activity that government and its bureaucracies become increasingly irrelevant.

How China Sabotaged Climate Talks & Shifted Blame On Obama
merrie
by merrie  12-23-2009    1
Why should rich countries not announce even this unilateral cut? "The Chinese delegate said no, and I watched, aghast, as Merkel threw up her hands in despair and conceded the point. Now we know why - because China bet, correctly, that Obama would get the blame for the Copenhagen accord's lack of ambition. "But I saw Obama fighting desperately to salvage a deal, and the Chinese delegate saying "no", over and over again." Lynas says the 2020 peaking year was then "replaced by woolly language" and the global 50 per cent cuts by 2050 were also removed. "No-one else, perhaps with the exceptions of India and Saudi Arabia, wanted this to happen," Lynas said. 'Took the bait' Lynas fears "the truth about what actually happened is in danger of being lost amid the spin and inevitable mutual recriminations". "China's strategy was simple: block the open negotiations for two weeks, and then ensure that the closed-door deal made it look as if the west had failed the world

Hospital Cleaners More Valuable Than Bankers
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  12-21-2009    2
Interesting article. More below: "The study, "A Bit Rich" from the New Economics Foundation looked at six different types of British employees in aggregate, and found that: For a salary of between ?50,000 and ?12 million, top advertising executives destroy ?11 of value for every pound in value they generate. # or every ?1 hospital cleaners are paid, over ?10 in social value is generated. # For a salary of between ?75,000 and ?200,000 tax accountants destroy ?47 of value for every pound in value they generate. # For every ?1 of spent on waste recycling workers' wages, ?12 of value will be generated. Contrary to what we might expect, given the vociferous defence of the importance of wholesale banking to the UK economy, the City of London contributes only around 3 per cent of value added every year. Claims have been made about the trickle down effects of wealthy City bankers' spending in the economy but there is little real evidence to back this up"

What is dangerous is that even contemplating such a mad waste of resources is diverting attention from the genuine need to build enough proper, grown-up power stations to keep our lights on. For that the time is fast running out, if it hasn't done so already

UK is now spelt C-H-I-N-A
drummond1999
by drummond1999  11-11-2009
The UK government is moving in leaps and bounds to becoming the most repressive state in Europe. Already they have the most comprehensive DNA database of citizens in the world (it has taken an EU court ruling to restrict the holding of innocent citizens DNA to 6 years) now they will be monitoring and storing every call, text, email and website a citizen visits. Sad times, shame this news did not come out of the 5th of November...

Stone Age Humans Crossed Sahara in the Rain
merrie
by merrie  11-10-2009    1
Wet spells While about 40 per cent of hydrocarbons in today's dust come from water-dependent plants, this rose to 60 per cent, first between 120,000 and 110,000 ago and again from 50,000 to 45,000 years ago. So the region seemed to be in the grip of unusually wet spells at the time. That may have been enough to allow sub-Saharan Stone Age Homo sapiens to migrate north: the first fossils of modern humans outside Africa date from 93,000 year ago in Israel. And both genetic analysis and archaeology show that humans didn't spread extensively beyond Africa until 50,000 years ago, suggesting a second migration at the time of the second wet spell. Fossil record Ian Tattersall of the American Museum of Natural History in New York is impressed by the findings. "They tie in approximately with the information we have from the fossil record."

Who says it's green to burn woodchips?
JICWyllie
by JICWyllie  10-25-2009    2
Almuth Ernsting from Biofuelwatch said: "It's almost unbelievable that we're creating vast areas of monoculture, mile after mile, just to be cut down as fast as they grow, to be shipped thousands of miles to be burned just for people's electricity. It just doesn't make sense. What about all the habitat that gets destroyed along the way?" Arrrghhh!!!! Please pass on ... retweet ... whatever. Somewhere I line must be drawn. See how woodlands can support multiple livings, and how complex they really are... www.worldwidewood.wordpress.com.

Trustworthy vs lustworthy: the psychology of attraction
cakebelly
by cakebelly  9-14-2009
more (at source): But because we are programmed to avoid finding close relatives sexually attractive, this means those we trust are not necessarily the ones we find attractive. Dr DeBruine’s team found that even when looking at members of the opposite sex, subjects found those who looked like them trustworthy — but they did not want to sleep with them. “When the players were judging the faces for physical attractiveness they thought similar faces less attractive,” she said. “So we believe resemblance is trustworthy — but not lustworthy.”
