3-D Viewing without Goofy Glasses
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  6-14-2008    1
As with earlier techniques, the illusion requires specially-created content to start with. In this case, a digital movie file effectively has two frames for each ordinary movie frame. The first is an ordinary color image, identical to what would be seen on a two-dimensional screen. A second frame, rather than showing a second offset view, encodes information about how viewers should perceive depth in the first frame. It appears as a grayscale version of the first, with white indicating foreground objects, black denoting deep background, and shades of gray indicating points in between.

This article talks about a 28 minute film that is done in what is known as Steampunk Fiction. What is Steampunk? Alternate Earth Sci-Fi with a focus on technology of now and the future and even the imagination if Steam-power had remained the operating force behind all mechanics and electronics...

Multidimensional space through art
pokkets
by pokkets  5-14-2008    1
Generally for the sake of the illusion of 3 Dimensions and perspective. There are plenty of artists beside Escher that represent multidimensional space, but he does a particularly good job of it. The last stereogram at the bottom is the thinker. I ran out of characters. (you can always go to the site.) Stereograms can be annoying sometimes when you can't see what it is, and everyone else can. It can be like that, then suddenly one day a picture can jump out. It can help if you know what you're looking for. One problem with these may be looking too hard, when the eyes are probably better off relaxing.

Inside a Tsunami Factory
alanocu
by alanocu  5-3-2008    1
Image shows travel times of Pacific tsunamis originating from earthquakes off Chile and Alaska. Last year aboard the vessel Chikyu, a Japanese science vessel, researchers took 3D seismic images of the faultzone, the point where the North American plate is subsiding with the Filipino plate. The images they retrieved helped the researchers to pick the best spot to drill. However, in their imaging, they also managed to discover new steeper faults in the rock. Tthese near-vertical faults could be the reason why the Nankai Trough produces approximately one 8+ earthquake every 150 years.

Professor Walter Lewin demonstrates that the period of a pendulum is independent of the mass hanging from the pendulum. This demonstration can be viewed on the video of Lecture 10. (Image courtesy of Markos Hankin, Physics Department Lecture Demonstration Group). The Video Index gives a breakdown of topics and the start time of the corresponding segment in each lecture. To access a particular segment, play the lecture in a RealPlayer window and adjust the slider bar to the designated start time.  The Kolibri Cordless sensor, developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics: a light an small device that can take 3D images of almost anything and almost anywhere. LED lights shine a projector light on an object, and two cameras record the image from two different angles. Then a computer compiles the data into a 3D image.

Mars canyon in HD
dakotayii
by dakotayii  3-30-2008    1
Hebes Chasma is a very prominent Mars feature just north of the huge Valles Marineris system (a.k.a. the "Grand Canyon of Mars"). Hebes is described as an enclosed trough, with a high, flat-top mountain range right in the centre. The canyon is over 8 km deep in places, and the central mountain ascends to this height, at the same level as the surrounding plains
