POPSThe US House of Presumptive Meddlers Advocates of government control want you to believe that the serious shortcomings of our medical and insurance system are failures of the free market. But that's impossible because our market is not free. Each state operates a cozy medical and insurance cartel that restricts competition through licensing and keeps prices higher than they would be in a genuine free market. But the planners won't talk about that. After all, if government is the problem in the first place, how can they justify a government takeover?

POPSObamaCare: A Bad Deal for Young Adults Massachusetts benefits from another type of subsidy that props up its regime of mandates and price controls: large subsidies from the federal government. In contrast, the United States as a whole has no external party it can exploit to subsidize a nationwide Massachusetts-style health care overhaul"unless Congress finances that overhaul through additional deficit spending, which is really just another way of taxing the young to subsidize the old. by Aaron Yelowitz Aaron Yelowitz is an associate professor of economics at the University of Kentucky and an adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute. This paper is based on a lecture delivered to the Undergraduate Economics Society at the University of Kentucky on October 1, 2009.

POPSArmy Experience Center's Bad Experience: Turns out Training Kids to Kill Not Popular with Public September 12, 2009, a crowd of 250 activists marched to the AEC in opposition to the use of public dollars to teach children--in a quasi-public-space--that killing can be fun, while also recruiting eighteen-year-olds to engage in the real thing. This time, police arrested six protesters and one journalist. The journalist, Cheryl Biren, wasn't with the protesters but was picked out of the crowd, apparently because of her professional camera. Days prior to this long-planned and publicly announced protest, the Army preemptively announced that it would likely close the AEC and not open any others in shopping malls, as had been planned. The reason? Are you ready to hear this? By their own admission, the Army doesn't need any more recruits because the bad economy has driven up recruitment significantly.

POPSGrowing Up Bin Laden Wife and son bare secrets of terror kingpin (married to a monster). Najwa says Americans were kind and friendly, but the country was not to her conservative tastes. Pets met horrible ends. A monkey the children loved was run over by one of Osama's men. She watched the television in horror as the Twin Towers fell, claiming the lives of 2,991 people. Najwa says she has not spoken to Osama since the attacks. And this is the kind of animal species, the pals of Obama that exist at Gitmo, yet liberals defend this trash. Incredible. Just revolting.

POPSTexting instead of sleeping
This is so disturbing. Social media has such wonderful potential, but seeing it used like this is depressing. Call me crazy but i would strongly consider advocating legislation that caps the number of text messages, tweets, status updates, etc. that a minor is allowed to send. God knows how many of them text while driving, putting us all at great risk. Between twitter and text messaging, society's use of social tools to stay connected 24x7 all day, every day just makes no sense to me. Seeing tweets about what people are doing, who they're with, where they're going, what they're eating, what they're watching just makes no sense to me. Who cares! Is there no joy in doing something anymore unless we can instantly tweet about it, upload a photo of it or broadcast it to our 'friends' on facebook? I think there is so much to gain from social media...so much to learn. But right now i feel like people are drunk on the idea and using it extreme ways that will look foolish in hinds

POPSYoung adults' anxiety 'overload' I guess most of us could cry out that we faced stresses too, and roughly the same. (All I really remember about exams was how stressed the girls were, and yet they always scored higher marks than most males.) The best thing about this is that people are wanting to help teens, which is something I never came across.

POPSDisgusting: Polish politicians and artists speak in support of Polanski Very disappointed in Wałęsa. More: So there we have it, a curious -- or not -- double standard. Pedophiles are considered degenerates in Poland now, undeserving of human rights. Except when they are famous filmmakers with powerful friends, that is. An inescapable lesson from Polanski's saga so far: if you are going to rape a child, don't be a plumber or auto mechanic; be famous and rich. Then justice will be slow and lenient for you, and people will forgive your crime. Nah, they'll be clamoring to speak out in your defense.

POPSBacteria Have Role in Swine Flu Deaths Earlier CDC reports found that H1N1 swine flu deaths tended to be caused by direct infection of the lungs with the new flu bug. That may have caused doctors to let down their guard against bacterial infections in flu patients. the CDC now advises doctors who suspect bacterial infections in swine flu patients to treat them with anti-flu drugs and antibiotics. The CDC report carries dramatic examples of H1N1 swine flu deaths with bacterial infections: * A 2-month-old girl, with no known underlying condition, died with pneumococcal infection after an illness of only one day. * A 9-year-old girl with no reported underlying condition died with a strep infection after an illness of six days. * A 34-year-old man with high blood pressure and obesity died with pneumococcal infection after an illness of about three days.

POPSThree primary school pupils arrested after 'copycat sex attack on boys' It comes just weeks after two brothers aged ten and 11 from Edlington near Doncaster, South Yorkshire were convicted of the worst child on child attack since the murder of Jamie Bulger. Despite their young age, they already had a fearsome reputation in their community when they battered their young victims aged nine and 11 with bricks until the point where one pleaded to be left to die. Thankfully both survived the nightmare in April. As in this latest attack which is said to have taken place in Hengrove Park, the perpetrators allegedly forced the boys to abuse each other. Yesterday, the devastated father of one of the ten year-olds said he believed it was a copycat crime.

POPSVeteran End of Life Questions: Vets Referred to Hemlock Society (Video)
...there is a check list in the middle of the document that specifically asks questions about "What makes your life worth living?”. It is a checklist that doesn’t just include needing a feeding tube or being on permanent life support, the questions are absolutely, in my opinion, insane. These questions are being asked to all Veterans receiving treatment, including 20 year olds who have been severely wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan. I have listed all of the questions below so you can see for yourself: Click on link to view survey list of questions. http://maggiesnotebook.blogspot.com/2009/08/veteran-end-of-life-questions-vets.html These questions are followed by the questions below: “If you checked "worth living, but just barely" for more than one factor, would a combination of these factors make your life "not worth living?" If so, which factors? If you checked "not worth living," does this mean that you would rather die than be kept alive?

POPSUN Planning Sex for Tots according to report Just thinking out loud here, do I really want my child to be learning about masturbation at the ripe old age of 5? Personally I think this idea borders on pedophilia but then of course what do I know I am simply a feather brained bird butt, but to this old bird this is a LOONY idea and should fly over the cuckoo's nest with the rest of the loony lefts ideas.

POPSpoem: "Lotus" by B. Durbin Remainder of poem: And yet, one wonders how much travelled along the Silk Road, if a Frenchman, perhaps, heard the tales of the tiny feet, the grace of the Lotus Walk, the delicately embroidered shoes, and it sparked a tale of fortune's turn about, the dispossessed coming back into her own. He wouldn't have heard the details; three-year-olds handed over to foot-binders to break them for beauty. We have a knack for finding those things beautiful which are harmful in the end. Arsenic complexions belladonna eyes compressed and corseted waists— perhaps the only surprising thing is that it ended. It endured for a thousand years.
