Investigators say the suspect, Abdul Farouk Umar Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian student whose birthday was last Tuesday, has provided detailed information about his recruitment and training for what was supposed to be a Christmas Day suicide attack. The announcement said the device contained PETN (pentaerythritol), which the Justice Department called “a high explosive.” “FBI agents recovered what appear to be the remnants of the syringe from the vicinity of Abdulmutallab’s seat, believed to have been part of the device,” the released added. The government said: “Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, a Nigerian national, boarded Northwest Flight 253 in Amsterdam, Netherlands on December 24, 2009 and had a device attached to his body.

The suspect told authorities that he had explosive powder taped to his leg and used a syringe of chemicals to mix with the powder that was to cause explosion. This is of concert because it is a method of mixing that is consistent with terror techniques. The suspect traveled from Nigeria to Amsterdam and then Detroit. Fortunately, the man suffered second-degree burns, consistent with fireworks or low-level explosives. The Airbus A330-300, a twin-engine jet, was carrying 278 passengers.
