Wisconsin Court Rejects Lawsuit Challenging New Voters; AG Vows to Appeal
raisins4peace
by raisins4peace  10-26-2008    1
Sometimes the political system makes me sad. Continuing, "The GAB said conducting such matches before November would cast doubt on the eligibility of voters based solely on unreliable databases and would create chaos for overworked election officials who would have to further investigate the discrepancies to determine the eligibility of voters ... HAVA doesn't specify any penalty for not matching; it leaves it to states to decide what to do ... Shortly thereafter, on September 10, Van Hollen, sued, on the basis that the state was violating HAVA by not conducting matches of records. Wisconsin planned to conduct matches only on voters who registered after August 6, 2008, when the statewide registration database became operational. The attorney general sued to get the state to retroactively match all voters who registered since Jan. 1, 2006, which the GAB said would involve about 1.23 million voters."

GOP Loses Bid to Disenfranchise WI Voters
Wisco
by Wisco  10-23-2008    6
A big victory for cheesehead democracy. Van Hollen is the state co-chair for McCain's campaign and, since lawsuit was to throw out newly registered voters that don't match existing records (misspelled names, new addresses, middle initial instead of middle name, etc.) since 2006, the suit was an incredibly transparent attempt to knock back a dem voter registration boom since then. In my opinion, Van Hollen should be recalled for this. It was dirty, it was undemocratic, it was corrupt, and it made a lot of Wisconsinites as mad as hell. Voter suppression efforts should never be forgiven or forgotten.

Democrats have done what in 2 years?
The REAL Napster
by The REAL Napster  8-29-2008    7
They can lambast all they want about the 'past 8 years' Truth be told the Democrats have effective control of the house and senate as well as a majority of the governorships in the U.S. since November, 2006. We already know that the 'Speaker of the House' is a sad joke. And Congress actually has as low (if not lower) approval rating than the current president. So, I ask- democrats already have control, now what have you done with it? Nothing. Same as usual.

Texan Republican faces stunning defeat: Democrats riding wave in GOP Gerrymandered State.
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  12-20-2007
This election is a sign of the future. In less than 2 years, Texas Democrats have picked up 8 state house seats with rumors circulating that another may be on the way. Before the primaries are over, the gains made by the Republican's have been cut in half while we still compete on the same Republican favored, unconstitutional, Tom DeLay sponsored map. We sit on the edge of a Democratic House because we have won special elections, general elections, and the hearts and minds of voters across the state. Texas Democratic Party Chairman, Boyd Richie stated simply: Dan Barrett won in a district drawn by Republicans to elect a Republican, and his victory is a slap in the face to Speaker Tom Craddick and the failed Republican leadership in this state. Voters have sent a message that they are tired of "business as usual" in Austin and want leaders who will replace the pay-to-play politics of the Republican Party with a state government that works for all Texans."

GOP: Luster gone, losses attractiveness
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  5-6-2007    3
Adults, not voters? Perhaps most alarming for Republicans is that for the Gallup interviews conducted during the last quarter of 2006, the Democratic advantage was a whopping 14.2 points: 52.3 percent for Democrats and 38.1 percent for Republicans. In my mind, I can already see many Republicans and conservatives, particularly in the blogging set, rushing to their computer keyboards to point out that the Gallup numbers were among adults and not voters. But I seriously doubt that any credible pollster or psephologist (a student of elections and polling) would argue that the differential between adults and voters, particularly presidential election year voters, would amount to more than 10 points.

CQ Analyisis: Race and Gender in 2008 Presidential Election
kelvin273
by kelvin273  1-1-2007
I find this analysis kind of amusing when it comes to Southern Ohio. This state has elected women to statewide office before, including a Republican attorney general. Furthermore, the Republican nominee for governor last year was a black man, J. Kenneth Blackwell. Ohio Republicans have no problem voting for either women or minorities. This sounds like another attempt by the political class to blame the potential failure of liberal politics to capture votes on such things like race and gender (see, Jesse Jackson c. 1984 and 1988).

Carter is doing his best to help fight terrorism by trying to ease the tensions between Israel and Palestine. He says that allowing Israel to oppress the Palestinians is the source of much of the Arab antipathy toward America. I've always admired Carter. Now I respect him even more.
