POPSSTATUE OF LIBERTY PICTURES: Rare Views, Inside and Out The torch has been off-limits to visitors since the "Black Tom" explosion of July 30, 1916. Debris from the attack on U.S. ammunition supplies on nearby—and long since subsumed by landfill—Black Tom Island, New Jersey, pierced the statue. Another attack—the terrorist assault on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001—prompted the full closure of Liberty Island, which was reopened a hundred days later. The Statue of Liberty would reopen in 2004, and the reopening of the crown will complete the process on the Fourth of July, 2009.

Maybe provocative or sexy. I wouldn't call it "slutty" though? "But the cemetery officials are not alone in criticising Ungerer’s memorial. Photographer Günther Zint, another friend of Niehoff, told the newspaper, “There was a bit of a debate among her friends whether Tomi needed to emphasise her breasts like that. They were after all a bane of her life.” Niehoff, who gained fame for advocating the rights of sex workers in the 70s and 80s, died at age 63 in February 2009. Originally from Cologne, Niehoff lived through drugs, child prostitution and desperate attempts to get out of the sex trade. She grew up in an orphanage before slipping into prostitution, when she married a brothel owner, who committed suicide ten years later. She worked as a prostitute in Munich and Hamburg and had her own brothel before she began to push for the legalisation of prostitution in Germany in the 1980s. She then became a social worker to help women to get off the street."

POPSGeorge Orwell's Birthday Today is George Orwell's Birthday. Eric Arthur Blair was born on 25 June 1903. Nearly everybody in the English-speaking world has at least heard of, if not read, the iconic books 1984 and Animal Farm , or has at least heard of Big Brother. Less familiar is his work as journalist, essayist, poet and critic. Our language has acquired the adjective orwellian to describe a situation nobody wants to be facing. When I taught writing, my students' first assignment was to write an in-class essay, then read Orwell's essay Politics and the English Language , which is the source of the material in the clip above, then rework their own essay using the rules Orwell recommended. It usually improved their work. However, rereading Politics and the English Language finds me thinking that in the sixty-three years since it was first published, that, firstly, in all this time, few people have taken its advice to heart; (continued in comments)

POPSPoisonous plans for the Rio Grande in Texas A US government project indicates that the border patrol is going to test three methods to rid the riverbank of carrizo cane. Members of the Laredo city council, in Mexico, have raised concerns and called on president Felipe Calderon to intervene. Mexican officials are worried that the herbicide imazapyr could threaten the Nuevo Laredo water supply. US border patrol and Environmental Protection Agency officials say the herbicide planned for the test is safe for animals. The programme is intended to keep border patrol agents safe and make their jobs easier. Imazapyr was registered in the US in 1984. The EPA concluded after tests that "there is a reasonable certainty that no harm will result to the general population, and to infants and children from aggregate exposure to imazapyr residues". Jay Johnson-Castro Sr, executive director of the Rio Grande International Study, said he has no issue with removing the cane, just the method.
