The Peace Dividend: Myth and Reality
katsteevns
by katsteevns  1-4-2010
Despite America's fiscal recklessness in the 1980s, the sudden end of the cold war has provided the nation at least a modest opportunity to improve its economic health without raising taxes or cutting already anemic social spending. The nation has wasted such opportunities in the past, notably after Viet Nam. It could all too easily squander its savings again. Washington should provide leadership on this issue, not pliancy to every special-interest group. The worst outcome would be for the U.S. to beat its swords into more credit cards.

How Leftist 'peace groups' are helping terrorists
Jacob173
by Jacob173  1-2-2010    3
In Latin America, most of the peace groups involved in areas of conflict have a strongly Leftist orientation, which means they are eagerto make accusations against the United States and freely elected democratic governments, while maintaining relative silence about Leftist insurgents and the brutality of dictatorships in Cuba and Venezuela. This behaviour of Western peace groups follows a familiar pattern. During the 1970s and 1980s, Soviet bloc intelligence agencies were heavily involved in organising and directing the Western European peace movement. After the collapse of the East German regime in 1989, Western scholars were able to examine the files of the Stasi, the East German Intelligence Service, which provided a window into the thinking of many major Western Peace groups and the eagerness with which the peace groups accepted Soviet Bloc support and espoused the Soviet line. Many of the peace groups only protested about NATO policies while ignoring Soviet actions.

Obama's Critics Are Also in His Administration
merrie
by merrie  12-27-2009    1
Those deficits were nothing compared to those provided in Obama's budget. His deficits would last years after the recession is over and in spite of the massive tax increases that promises to accompany them. The Democrats correctly criticized Bush's deficits. Feldstein notes that Obama's deficits, because of its expensive health care agenda will reach $9.3 trillion -- more than twice the amount of the previous administration. In an earlier article in the Washington Post, Feldstein noted that "For the 85 percent of Americans who already have health insurance, the Obama health plan is bad news. It means higher taxes, less health care and no protection if they lose their current insurance because of unemployment or early retirement." Feldstein also notes that the price of the program is enormous and would cost more than $1 trillion and would raise the current maximum tax rate from 35 to 45 percent.

'Share him with the world' Hoffman met Kim Peek while playing the role of Rain Man and was impressed by his ability to remember everything that was said to him. Hoffman advised Fran Peek, then his son's sole caregiver, not to hide his son away. "Dustin Hoffman said to me, you have to promise me one thing about this guy, share him with the world," Fran Peek recalled. Kim Peek eventually went on tour, demonstrating his abilities to dispel misconceptions about mental disability.

Roberts goes home...

It's always sad when someone's farther, son or loved one dies. However I think all the old ladies who gave their precious few dollars to a charlatan who said "give me $$ or god will take me" are far better off without him around... However, I'm sure the uber-weathly Richard Roberts is proud of the empire his dad built ... proud enough to lead the lifestyle of the rich & famous.

HAS ANYONE SEEN PHIL JONES???" Polar Bear Goes Hunting for Climate-Gate Scientist at Copenhagen Summit
merrie
by merrie  12-15-2009    1
It was Jones who, in an e-mail to a colleague, wrote of using a "trick" to "hide the decline" of data indicating global warming from the 1980s and onward. That e-mail and thousands of others were posted online in November, and have since been taken as evidence by skeptics to claim global warming is a scam. One of those skeptics was the man behind the bear suit: Phelim McAleer, a journalist and filmmaker who last year produced "Not Evil Just Wrong," which disputes many of the assertions made in former Vice President Al Gore's documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth." McAleer, a persistent critic of Gore's film, frequently attends public events and venues to question and discuss the Nobel Prize-winner's position on environmental issues. McAleer has now turned his sights on Jones and the Climate-Gate scandal. Jones and others have come under intense fire since the hacked e-mails became public. Other climate researchers were revealed to have blackballed dissenting scientists .....

Chicago Welcomes You: Helping a unique immigrant community adjust to life in the US
Lexica
by Lexica  12-6-2009
More: The problem is that a process that was designed for, say, German Jews fleeing to America during World War II or political prisoners escaping Castro’s Cuba is now expected to work for immigrants who may never have seen a streetlight, cooked on a stove, used a toilet that isn’t a hole in the ground or handled any type of currency. Booklets and handouts provided by governmental agencies are too simplistic to be illuminating. And the Karen are more likely than previous refugee groups to be illiterate in their own myriad and distinct languages… Chicago Welcomes You, a venture to develop a kit of bilingual orientation materials…The kit includes a 94-page book, a set of 29 ring-bound activity cards and an illustrated storybook… The book and activity cards are broadly organized into chapters covering health, safety, housing and so on, and are designed for both organized and ad-hoc learning experiences with volunteers.

El Centro Holds Position for Highest Jobless Rate

To outlast the economic crisis, Duggins Construction has adapted its business from a new commercial construction focus to include remodels and renovations. But until banks loosen their grips and start lending again, Duggins said business won't return to normal. "Lenders have gone from one extreme to another. Before, you could get a loan with just a signature. Now we joke that if you want a $500,000 loan, you better have $500,000 sitting in the bank," he said. "Banks just need to go back to how they were doing business in the late 1970s and 1980s, where they are lending so that people can put that money back into the economy and get it going." Barbara Ehrenreich: The uproar over the new breast cancer screening guidelines
Lexica
by Lexica  12-3-2009    1
More: So welcome to the Women’s Movement 2.0: Instead of the proud female symbol -- a circle on top of a cross -- we have a droopy ribbon. Instead of embracing the full spectrum of human colors -- black, brown, red, yellow, and white -- we stick to princess pink. While we used to march in protest against sexist laws and practices, now we race or walk “for the cure.” And while we once sought full “consciousness” of all that oppresses us, now we’re content to achieve “awareness,” which has come to mean one thing – dutifully baring our breasts for the annual mammogram. …the numbers are increasingly insistent: Routine mammographic screening of women under 50 does not reduce breast cancer mortality in that group, nor do older women necessarily need an annual mammogram. In fact, the whole dogma about “early detection” is shaky… the idea has been to catch cancers early, when they’re still small, but some tiny cancers are viciously aggressive, and some large ones aren’t going anywhere

Spy agencies foil Obama plan for transparency
sahara
by sahara  11-30-2009
But now Obama finds himself in the awkward position of extending the secrecy, despite his repeated pledges of greater transparency, because his administration has been unable to prod spy agencies into conformance. Some of the agencies have thrown up roadblocks to disclosure, engaged in turf battles over how documents should be evaluated, and have reviewed only a fraction of the material to determine whether releasing them would jeopardize national security. In the face of these complications, the White House has given the agencies a commitment that they will get an extension beyond Dec. 31 of an undetermined length - possibly years, said the administration officials, who spoke on the condition they not be identified discussing internal deliberations. It will be the third such extension: Clinton granted one in 2000 and Bush granted one in 2003. The documents, dating from World War II to the early 1980s, cover the gamut of foreign relations, intelligence activities, and military..

I do not want to even attempt to imagine what that would be like. I saw "The Bell and the Butterfly." Ultimatly, no thank you - if the only hope was that many years later I may be able to communicate blinking I don't want to stick around. What is wonderful is that this family chose to keep trying, assuming that is what the man wanted. Make sure you tell your loved ones what you would want to have happen in instances such as this(and draft documents!). They will have stress enough without having to guess what you want.

Morphine 'might spread cancer
Nerfzilla
by Nerfzilla  11-23-2009
Cancer Research UK said more tests were needed before any changes in treatment. Dr Patrick Singleton from the University of Chicago told the meeting of experts that in laboratory tests, morphine not only strengthened blood vessels but also appeared to make it easier for cancers to invade other tissues and spread. But he said this could be overcome by a drug - methylnaltrexone or MNTX - developed in the 1980s to prevent morphine-related constipation but only recently approved in the US. It appears to work without interfering with the pain-relieving properties of the opiate. 'Long history' In mice with lung cancer, MNTX inhibited the apparent tumour-promoting effects of opiates, and reduced the spread of cancer in the mice by 90%. "If confirmed clinically, this could change how we do surgical anaesthesia for our cancer patients," said Dr Singleton, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Chicago Medical Center and principal author of the research.
