Czech Wounds Still Open, Communists Face a Ban
dl211
by dl211  Yesterday 11:13 PM    1
“We believe the Communist Party should be suspended until they give up the title of ‘communist’ and denounce Marx and Lenin, who regarded violence as a legitimate means of gaining power,” Mr. Stetina said. “Not even the millions of dead bodies, which are the consequence of Lenin’s policies, have convinced the Czech Communist Party to abandon his teachings."

Facts for Predicting Global Cooling for the Next Three Decades
amgumen
by amgumen  1-3-2010
Global warming (i.e, the warming since 1977) is over. The minute increase of anthropogenic CO2 in the atmosphere (0.008%) was not the cause of the warming—it was a continuation of natural cycles that occurred over the past 500 years. The PDO cool mode has replaced the warm mode in the Pacific Ocean, virtually assuring us of about 30 years of global cooling, perhaps much deeper than the global cooling from about 1945 to 1977. Just how much cooler the global climate will be during this cool cycle is uncertain. Recent solar changes suggest that it could be fairly severe, perhaps more like the 1880 to 1915 cool cycle than the more moderate 1945-1977 cool cycle. A more drastic cooling, similar to that during the Dalton and Maunder minimums, could plunge the Earth into another Little Ice Age, but only time will tell if that is likely.

Nineteen Eighty-Four
katsteevns
by katsteevns  12-29-2009    2
As literary science fiction, 1984 is a classic novel of the social science fiction sub-genre, thus, since its publication in 1949, the terms and concepts of Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime, Newspeak, et cetera, became contemporary vernacular, including the adjective Orwellian, denoting George Orwell's writings and totalitarianism as exposited in Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm (1945).

Obama Sets Interpol Above US Law
Antara
by Antara  12-26-2009
"Interestingly, Interpol's US headquarters is in the Justice Department, run by the same corrupt, pro-terrorist lowlife who quashed an investigation into Black Panther voter intimidation on Obama's behalf. NRO wonders: Why is it suddenly necessary to have, within the Justice Department, a repository for stashing government files which, therefore, will be beyond the ability of Congress, American law-enforcement, the media, and the American people to scrutinize? Interpol works closely with the International Criminal Court, a gang of moonbats who would gladly round up prominent Republicans like Dick Cheney and throw them in jail on charges of insensitivity to terrorists. America has refused to surrender its sovereignty to this ultra-left kangaroo court — a policy Chairman Zero is likely to reverse. In most banana republics, you only have to worry about your own police. But in the dystopia of "Hopey Change," who knows who may soon be dragging you out of bed in the middle of th

Obama's Legacy
merrie
by merrie  12-17-2009    1
That far exceeds what's needed to turn on the lights, but it's also beyond what's needed for a basic nuclear weapons program. Consider North Korea, which manufactured two limited yield nuclear weapons using only a plutonium reactor, a plutonium reprocessing facility, and -- presumably -- some sort of weapons laboratory. Why is Iran pumping billions more into building and protecting triple the number of facilities required to build a basic nuclear weapon, akin to the Fat Man or Little Boy bombs detonated in 1945? The answer could be that Tehran is skipping basic weapons construction and moving towards an advanced thermonuclear design. Consider that they've already experimented with advanced weapons designs like two-point implosion, nuclear triggers, and have built their own facility at Arak that could be used to produce both tritium, which is a suspected boosting agent in hydrogen bomb designs, as well as weapons-grade plutonium.

A taste of Norman Rockwell
Socratoad
by Socratoad  11-18-2009
By 1925 Rockwell was a national name, and by the end of the Depression was an institution. Very few people saw his original work, only in the form of reproductions, but this is often the case today when famous works of art are readily available in art books or on computer screens. Hughes dismisses Rockwell as “homelier than apple pie, more American than the flag, and more affirmative than Dad.”

"Keep The Spirit Of '45 Alive" Brings Youth And Seniors Together
ericgyoung
by ericgyoung  11-15-2009
History.com in conjunction with a number of partners (most of which I've clipped below) have begun their 3rd annual "Keep the Spirit of '45 Alive" initiative. This initiative has a novel approach to history - its goal is to bring the "latest generation" together with the "greatest generation" to recall their stories of August 14, 1945, the day World War II ended. Young people are enlisted in this initiative to assist seniors with telling their stories using electronic media, a remarkable concept and one that is so important to preserving the oral histories of our seniors. Although we are beyond Veterans' Day for 2009, the initiative is far from over. It runs until August 14, 2010 - the 65th anniversary of the end of the World War II and the day when rebuilding the modern world began. I came across the Spirit of '45 website completely by accident today, but I am definitely going to find out much more about it and see how one gets involved. If you are interested in World War I

Dana Milbank Is, as Mark Levin Describes Him, "A Punk, a Liar and a Coward"
merrie
by merrie  11-8-2009    1
Constitutional attorney, bestselling author and hit radio show host Mark Levin certainly doesn't mince words. Alerted to Milbank's latest hit piece in The Washington Post, Levin called Milbank out as a propagandist of the first order. The reason: out of literally tens of thousands of patriotic signs and shirts at Thursday's Capitol Hill protest, Milbank picked out a handful as supposedly representative of a crowd he described as "hateful and gruesome." An outraged Levin called Milbank a "punk, a liar and a coward" while challenging him to a debate on his show. Here's a Nazi reference that Milbank might appreciate: I think of him as the Josef Goebbels of his age. He writes patent propaganda in service of the State. And I can prove it. Bubba visited DC for the rally and wandered through the crowd for hours taking scores of photos. I created a montage -- click to zoom if you'd like read the dozens of visible messages -- from his collection.

Israel's nuclear capabilities - 25 Oct 09
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  10-30-2009
"While Israel is one of the loudest voices calling for a tougher line on Iran's nuclear programme, its own nuclear capability has never been put to inspection Israel has two nuclear research centres - at Dimona and Soreq. The latest estimates suggest that Israel has produced at least 118 warheads with weapons grade plutonium. The Jericho ballistic missiles are capable of carrying such weapons The Jericho One, which is now obsolete, had a range of 500 kilometres, and could carry a 20 kiloton nuclear warhead - 20 times more powerful than the US bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 The Jericho Two has a range of 1500 kilometres. It could just reach Iran - and is believed to be able to carry a one megaton nuclear bomb, which is 1,000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb. It is believed a Jericho Three missile is now being developed - that will be able to travel around 5,000 kilometres, bringing all of Iran and Europe into its range Al Jazeera's Nicole Johnston reports

Except during the Japanese-sponsored Philippine Republic from 1942-1945, the Congress functioned as the national legislature until September 1972 when President Ferdinand Marcos placed the country under martial law. As a consequence of the proclamation of the new Constitution on January 17, 1973, Congress was abolished and replaced by a unicameral National Assembly (Batasan Pambansa).

"It is with much embarassment that I have returned alive," he said upon his return to Japan. The remark would become a popular saying in Japanese. For twenty-eight years, he hid in an underground jungle cave, fearing to come out of hiding even after finding leaflets declaring that World War II had ended. Yokoi was the third-to-last Japanese soldier to surrender after the war.
