US Troops Risk All for Safety of Chinese and USA imperialism?
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  10-7-2009
At first blush, the story sounds win-win: China "invests" in Afghanistan, hires out of work Afghans, helps stabilize economy. US troops make it safe for Chinese "private" company to exploit mineral resources. Exploit is the right word. Two thirds of the economies in the developing world are still structured by past imperialistic dictates to supply North America, Europe, and Japan with raw materials to make products for themselves and to sell worldwide are greater profit. So Afghan copper profits will go to Chinese banks and when copper runs out, what do Afghans have? In a number of African nations who have sold such rights to Chinese, they did not get the jobs either; the Chinese brought in Chinese workers. Imperialism 21st century style is no kinder than it was in 18th century.

The last untouchable in Europe
Lexica
by Lexica  10-6-2009    3
More: On occasions, the bigotry was brutally enforced: in the early 18th century a prosperous Cagot in the Landes was caught using the font reserved for non-Cagots – his hand was chopped off and nailed to the church door. Another Cagot who dared to farm his fields (strictly verboten) had his feet pierced with hot iron spikes.… Even in death, the discrimination persisted – the Cagots were buried in their own humble cemeteries; there is still one in Bentayou-Sérée, a tiny village north of Pau.… I ask Marie-Pierre if she will let me use a picture of Sylvia – and the rest of her children. She shakes her head. "I'm sorry but no. It is OK for me to admit where I come from. But if people knew about my children's background, it might be difficult for them." She gazes out of the window, at the distant green Pyrenees. "In some places, the hatred lingers. Even now. The Cagots may be silent but I can still hear it."

Nazi Jew Designed "Final Solution"
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  10-5-2009
Clipped some highlights but it really does need to be read in its entirety. It will give you a much clearer picture of the world we see today. Also it is worthwhile mentioning that Zionism and Sabbatean Frankism, do not represent the Jewish people, some are not even Jewish but instead come from all creeds and colours Research what it claims for yourself if you doubt it. If it should so move you to do so, post a counter clip debunking it. but as always be meticulous in your fact finding and presentation and always check what you cite. Of course though, you won't be able to.

Start an Artist Salon
ronhuxley
by ronhuxley  9-8-2009
According to Wikipedia, a "Salon" is "A salon is a gathering of supposedly stimulating people of quality under the roof of an inspiring hostess or host, partly to amuse one another and partly to refine their taste and increase their knowledge through conversation and readings, often consciously following Horace's definition of the aims of poetry, "either to please or to educate" ("aut delectare aut prodesse est"). The salons, commonly associated with French literary and philosophical salons of the 17th century and 18th century, were carried on until quite recently in urban settings among like-minded people of a 'set': many 20th-century salons could be instanced." If you are trying to market yourself and your creative business, why not start a salon of like-minded folks. The worst that could happen is that you get together and meet other people. Most creative types I know complain that they are isolated. This is part of the job I know but you can correct this problem while offering

more: The painting however once belonged to the Spanish royal family, and Ms Moreira says she thinks this was when the post-production modesty came in. Removing layers of dirt, dust and paint specks that accumulated over more than three centuries cost 150,000 euros ($257,500).

The beauty and terror of science
ratilfar
by ratilfar  8-10-2009
A good history of science unreels like the practice of science itself. It wends through a world of experiments until a new reality arises. But the more layered story of that journey is that science is not just a process but is the men and women performing it. In his radiant new book, "The Age of Wonder," Holmes treats us to the amazing lives of the pioneering sailors and balloonists, astronomers and chemists of the Romantic era. Making good on the book's subtitle, he takes us on a dazzling tour of their chaotic British observatories and fatal explorations in African jungles, showing us "how the Romantic generation discovered the beauty and terror of science."

Ancient Theater Masks Rediscovered in Pompeii
cakebelly
by cakebelly  7-22-2009
more: According to Borriello, the fact that the large plaster masks were all dug up in the same place, might suggest they belonged to an artisan's workshop. A closer look at the artifacts revealed that the plaster was carefully hand-worked. Moreover, some of the masks have their mouth shut, a clear indication that they were used as models for a craftsman who then produced lighter masks for actors to wear.

A Declaration of Independence from Big Government
merrie
by merrie  7-4-2009    3
At every turn, the British Crown had concentrated political power and decision-making in its own hands, leaving the American colonists with little ability to manage their own affairs through local and state governments. Laws and rules were imposed without the consent of the governed; local laws and procedures meant to limit abusive or arbitrary government were abrogated or ignored. The king also had attempted to manipulate the legal system by arbitrarily appointing judges that shared his power-lusting purposes or were open to being influenced to serve the monarch’s policy goals. The king’s officials unjustly placed colonists under arrest in violation of writ of habeas corpus, and sentenced them to prison without trial by jury. Colonists often were violently conscripted to serve in the king’s armed forces and made to fight in foreign wars. But what was at the heart of many of their complaints and grievances against King George III were the economic controls that limited . . .

Rare copy of Declaration of Independence found
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  7-2-2009    3
The last Dunlap print to be found was sold at an auction for $8.14 million in 2000. National Archives officials said they weren't sure how the Declaration of Independence copy ended up there. Archives spokeswoman Frances McDarby said it was "possible that an American coastal vessel was intercepted by the British navy and that is how the document was able to come into our possession." The prints, known collectively as the Dunlap Broadside, were the first copies of the Declaration of Independence. They were printed by John Dunlap of Philadelphia and distributed to political and military leaders, including George Washington, and dispatched throughout the colonies to be read to the public.
