POPSThe True Story of the Statue of Liberty
The idea excited him so much that he booked a passage on a ship and sailed to New York to drum up support for it. As he entered New York Harbor, Bartholdi noticed a small, 12-acre piece of land near Ellis Island, called Bedloe’s Island. He decided it was the perfect spot for his statue. Bartholdi spent the next five months traveling around the U.S. and getting support for the statue. Then he went back to France, where the government of Emperor Napoléon III (Napoléon Bonaparte’s nephew) was openly hostile to the democratic and republican ideals celebrated by the Statue of Liberty. They would have jailed him if he’d spoken of the project openly – so Bartholdi kept a low profile until 1874, when the Third Republic was proclaimed after Napoléon III’s defeat. Bartholdi went back to work. He founded a group called the Franco-American Union, comprised of French and American supporters, to help raise money for the statue. ...read the rest of this at source...good read!

POPSObama Planning a Legal Fudge for TARP? According to Reuters, “the administration was looking at setting up a special purpose vehicle to be a conduit for money…that would get around restrictions on executive bank pay.” There’s an irony here. Didn’t “special purpose vehicles” help carry us into this credit crisis to begin with? (Answer: They did! And into the Enron debacle, too.) Besides, isn’t it unseemly for the executive to skulk around the intent of a duly passed law? If the law is flawed, shouldn’t the administration persuade Congress to change it?

POPSEd Meese Suddenly Worried About the Prison Population So, Ed Meese, we respectfully disagree with you, when you say that "liberal ideas of extending the power of the state" are to blame for an out-of-control criminal justice system. You are, after all, the Ed Meese who said once said this: U.S News & World Report: You criticize the Miranda ruling, which gives suspects the right to have a lawyer present before police questioning. Shouldn't people, who may be innocent, have such protection? Meese: Suspects who are innocent of a crime should. But the thing is, you don't have many suspects who are innocent of a crime. That's contradictory. If a person is innocent of a crime, then he is not a suspect."
