Second Life changing Group IM
Lara Nieberding
by Lara Nieberding  1-11-2008
In all my years in real life, I have been the type of person to embrace change. Jump from the frying pan into the fire? Sure! Why not? The fire just might be better. However, in my Second Life the frying pan is definitely safer than the fire. Every time Linden Labs "updates/upgrades" Second Life, I have to achieve a new level of comfort. I have to learn a new set of workarounds to the new set of bugs. My Second Life has taught me the devil I know is safer than the devil I do not know.

Fraud
Lara Nieberding
by Lara Nieberding  1-9-2008
I had the opportunity to work as a virtual assistant for a banker in Second Life. He claimed he was honest and legitimate. As an inside observer of some of the activities, the exchanges looked fraudulent at best. When the residents of Second Life pressured the banker out, I think it spoke volumes about financial institutions, stock exchanges, etc giving even a hint of impropriety. As honest as this banker tried to be, the way he handled certain situations left SL residents with a sour taste in their mouths. For me, the bottom line is, banks and stock exchanges in Second Life stole money from residents. I did not invest any of my L$. The customers I worked with were very savvy. They asked a lot of hard questions before investing. I am a supporter of Linden Labs staying out of resident to resident interactions. I am a supporter of people trying new things in SL or using SL for educational purposes. To this date, the banks and exchanges in SL have taken advantage of residents.

Virtural Integration: Google and Second Life?
kidora
by kidora  9-25-2007    1
There has been a lot of talk lately about the integration of virtual worlds with the internet. The fact the Google likes to have it's fingers in all honey pots does not surprise me. While I enjoy Second Life as a creative platform and sometimes virtual vacation it is in need of a more stable and powerful system to work under. Perhaps Google and Linden Labs (the creators of Second Life) could work together. Google would be able to supply a much needed power boost to the relatively small Linden Labs.

Second Life Gets Real Weather from Boston
juliapatriciaroy
by juliapatriciaroy  8-15-2007
What a development. I bought clouds recently for over my house in Second Life because it makes the sky and the experience that much more real... plus they are pretty :) A Boston based Interactive agency Windward Mark, that was bought by Linden Labs in May, is going to integrate their atmospheric rendering software to make real-life weather possible in Second Life. How far will it go though? I mean currently you can "force" the sun to sunrise and sunset and so with these new developments will we be able to force rain, clouds and even snow?! Will puddles form as it rains? Will snow make our avatars shiver unless we are clothed properly? We will have to wait and see.

Carppy Support Rule #1: Try to blame the user
treocast
by treocast  4-15-2007
Just another example of the Linden's bad approach to support. They always try to find out how the user screwed things up when I've never had an issue that didn't turn out to be their problem.

Why 'Second Life' is crap!
funana
by funana  1-16-2007    7
Very interesting negative review... "Second Life’ is praised as one of the ‘new chances to life your live’ like you want it to, but this seems unreal for the following reasons: 1. I don’t like a world with Smurfs 2. I don’t want to live in a world with goddamn zebras talking to me 3. Second Life is already commercialized, at two different spots a person was offering ‘free ipods’ if you’d click on his shinny backpack. 4. Second Life features a world which is empty, or at least not really populated. 5. Second Life features cheap adult material, sleazy hookers and strippers. If one wants porn, simply fire up google and look for it. 6. Second Life makes it rather impossible to earn money big style, exceptions are rare. Why would you earn more in an E-True cybergame then at McDonalds around the corner? 7. Why can these people fly? 8. Weapons welcome in Second Life, so at least, was my impression. They can either be bought in arms shops or created using the ‘no limitations create

ETech 2006: Second Life (Web 3.0)
adamc
by adamc  3-7-2006    3
Very interesting presentation by Cory Ondrejka of Linden Labs centered on the power of user creation. I haven't checked out Second Life yet because I thought it was simply a 3D chat room. It's actually a lot more and I'm compelled to sign up now and start building some virtual objects and space. Some facts and figures he mentioned: * 35% of adults spend more time online than working * everything in Second Life is built by residents * residents own the intellectual property for their creations * Second Life has a US$6.5 million internal economy
