. Having initially lauded Ecuador’s legal system in an effort to have the case moved there, Chevron later changed its mind and began attacking the system when that system found the company liable for damages. Shareholders are also upset with Chevron for its gross mismanagement of the case in which it has sidestepped the rule of law and employed guerilla-style tactics in a last ditch effort to fend off an unfavorable ruling. Part of this includes hiring Hill & Knowlton, the same firm that represented the tobacco industry during its indictment over tobacco causing cancer, to perform the same task concerning toxic oil contaminants. Evidence presented at Chevron’s trial included over 50,000 chemical samples taken by the company itself which proved that all of its former oil drilling sites are contaminated with toxic byproducts that cause cancer. Many of these wells have contaminated rivers, streams, and other water sources which natives use for drinking water. Despite all the undenia

POPSChild porn victim would like to be paid for all those pictures people have downloaded of her
My comment: So negative this story is, sometimes there are no answers at all, just questions. One thing for sure, there are no winners. Article: The judge in the case acknowledged, "We're dealing with a frontier here." "The issue is part of a larger debate over fairness in sentencing sex offenders. For years, lawmakers (and some voters) have reasoned that virtually no punishment was too severe for such criminals; even statutory limits on sentencing were often exceeded." "Now some courts have begun to push back, saying these heavy sentences are improper, and a new emphasis has arisen on making sex offenders pay monetary damages for their crimes. If such damages become widespread, experts say, it may make it easier to reach a consensus on measured sentencing." A related article in the Virginian-Pilot is here (A man who lived in Virginia Beach and was a member of the Shriners there was convicted of downloading "the Misty series.") - http://st.bit.ly/cMNzpo

POPSArrogance in our face! When did "PUBLIC SERVICE" become the road to prosperity, recognition and ladder climbing? It was once considered a priviledge to serve one's country, and it's people, accomplish something good and then go home and resume what you did before. I say............kick them all out, cancel their healthcare, and pensions, and revert back to a volunteer position! Speaking to reporters at his weekly press briefing, Hoyer explained that Congress had already frozen its pay by rejecting a cost of living increase. However, extending that freeze was too much for Hoyer to support.

POPSRelocating Terrorists trial doesn't solve the problem
Now the administration is backtracking in order to fix its initially blundered decision to try these dangerous terrorists in New York City despite the great danger and cost to New Yorkers. This scenario is all too common in Washington. The tactic is to propose something so outrageous that the public will rise up and demand common sense, and then the White House “concedes” and changes its initial decision to give the impression of newfound reasonability and moderation. But the problem still isn’t solved! The trial location debate becomes a diversion so that we’ll take our eyes off the ball. The point missed is that our President still wants to give these terrorists U.S. constitutional protections in our civilian courts, allowing them to lawyer-up on our dime. This tactic is in the same vein as another Washington game: creating the appearance of a “crisis” in order to push for a radical solution. (“The health care crisis must be fixed by government now or we’re all gonna die! The eart

POPSSenators Urge Holder to Pull Plug on Plans for NYC Sept.11 Trial
"The cost of moving a handful of people and trying them and keeping them in New York City until the appeals are out could cost up to a billion and perhaps even over a billion dollars. So it will be done through the appropriations process," Wolf said. Graham said he's confident he can round up the votes. Democrats are particularly jittery following the election of Republican Scott Brown, who ran on a strong national security platform, to the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts last week. "There are a lot of Democrats who oppose the idea of sending them to New York City, putting them in civilian courts. And if I have another vote, I think I'll get a majority of the United States Senate," Graham said. Graham said he's concerned the administration continues to criminalize the war, and that the treatment of the alleged Christmas Day bomber -- who was read his Miranda rights hours after his capture -- underscores that point. "This is not Nuremberg, trying people after the

POPSBiden: US to Appeal Dismissal of Blackwater Case How can American citizens get a fair trial when the President and Vice President have stated that they are guilty? The U.S. rebuffed Iraqi demands that the U.S. contractors face trial in Iraqi courts. After a lengthy investigation, U.S. prosecutors charged five of the contractors with manslaughter and took a guilty plea from a sixth. But the case fell apart in December after a judge found that the Justice Department mishandled evidence and violated the guards’ constitutional rights. Prosecutors now face difficult odds getting an appeals court to reinstate the case. Luckily, under Mr. Obama’s regime, constitutional rights are only for foreign terrorists. Not American citizens who are risking their lives for our national security. And, lo and behold, we find buried at the bottom of this AP story: Court documents paint a murky picture of a case rife with conflicting evidence. Some witnesses say the Blackwater convoy was under fire;

POPSNeuroscience In The Justice System
Just wonderful. "One of the most controversial ways neuroscience is being used in the courtroom is through 'mind reading' and the detection of mental states. While only courts in New Mexico currently permit traditional lie detector, or polygraph, tests there are a number of companies claiming to have used neuroscience methods to detect lies. Some of these methods involve electroencephalography (EEG), whereby brain activity is measured through small electrodes placed on the scalp. This widely accepted method of measuring brain electrical potentials has already been used in two forensic techniques which have appeared in US courtrooms: brain fingerprinting and brain electrical oscillations signature (BEOS). Brain fingerprinting purportedly tests for 'guilty knowledge,' or memory of a kind that only a guilty person could have. Other forms of guilt detection, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), are based on the assumption that lying and truth-telling are associated with d
