As expressed in an article earlier in the week, balloon frame construction always poses a danger to firefighters. There is always a potential for fire to extend up the walls into floors above. In some cases firefighters will report an attic fire, but in turn they will really be facing a basement fire that is in a residence with balloon frame construction. Smoke, Heat, and fire well tend to rise up the wall cavity as a result of or a lack of fire stops. Size-up is key! Know your local building fabric and type of construction...this could make for quick fire stops, and our brothers to be able to go home safely. Watch the progression of what seems to be a small fire in the basement to a fire that gets out of control forcing one firefighter to escape from the 3rd floor, and an "evacuate the building" to be called.
