Situato al margine inferiore del Sahara, è (sarebbe...) il settimo lago più grande del mondo e vi si affacciano quattro Paesi: Nigeria, Niger, Ciad e Camerun.

Le dimensioni da sempre variano in ragione delle precipitazioni e della stagione. In teoria, al termine della stagione delle piogge dovrebbe essere sui 25.000 chilometri quadrati.

Dagli Anni 60 le piogge sono diminuite. Contemporaneamente è aumentato il prelievo d'acqua a scopi agricoli. Così la superficie del lago Ciad è diminuita del 95% in soli 35 anni.

Ultimamente le cose sono migliorate, un po' d'acqua è tornata. Ma il lago Ciad continua ad essere il fantasma di se stesso.
