Steeds meer mensen gooien de programmering van radio- en televisiezenders over boord en bepalen zelf wanneer ze een uitzending beluisteren, via internet. Uit cijfers van het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) blijkt dat het aantal mensen dat internet gebruikt voor traditionele media sinds 2005 is verdubbeld.
Vooral onder jongeren tot 25 jaar is internettelevise- en radio populair. Ruim 70% gebruikt deze media. Bij personen boven de 25 jaar zijn internettelevisie en -radio ongeveer even populair als online kranten.
