La decisione del governo algerino di non cedere al ricatto della paura e la presa di posizione del presidente  Abdelaziz Bouteflika, che in seguito agli attentati di aprile ha scatenato la massiccia offensiva dalle forze di sicurezza, stanno mettendo alle corde l’Organizzazione di al-Qaeda per il Maghreb islamico. All’interno del movimento estremista si sta poi verificando una vera implosione, dovuta alla scelta del terrorismo globale che ha portato il Gruppo salafita per la predicazione e il combattimento a sciogliersi per poi rinascere all’ombra di al-Qaeda. Agli arresti e alle morti dei militanti si aggiungono le rese incondizionate di coloro che non si identificano più nella guerra sanguinaria lanciata nel Maghreb dal braccio destro di Bin Laden, il medico egiziano Ayman al-Zawahri. Khiat è l’ultimo esempio di questa di questa rinuncia.
