In questo saggio l'autrice si esprime in un linguaggio nuovo, parla di controllo delle nascite e di aborto, sfida i cultori del bel sesso con 'le ovaie e la matrice'. Provocando il pubblico conservatore, de Beauvoir cerca riconoscimento personale e solidarietà collettiva, e li avrà. L'opera di respiro universale è diventata una tra le fondamentali del Novecento.
