World leaders recently met in New York at a United Nations high-level event to review progress, identify gaps, and renew efforts to reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). With the world half-way to 2015 and still hoping to cut poverty and hunger by half, massive increases in Official Development Assistance are being sought. But a recent debate on soil fertility shows that while more money is needed, climate change, escalating food production costs, and historic policy biases will conspire against any large-scale policy plans to meet the MDGs.
