España ha sido un país que apostó por América Latina. En el pasado, sus empresas invirtieron masivamente en el continente y la política exterior española se volcó también hacia Latinoamérica.

Otra prueba de este interés es el recién creado Fondo Español de Agua y Saneamiento para América Latina y el Caribe, impulsado por el gobierno de España con la agencia española de cooperación (AECID) como operador principal y en el cual colaborará el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID). Este fondo, lanzado oficialmente en la Cumbre Iberoamericana del 2007 realizada en Chile, arranca con una dotación inicial de 600 millones de euros y podría estar en el futuro dotado hasta de mil 500 millones de dólares, una cantidad muy respetable.

Tras la reciente reunión anual del BID a finales de marzo en Colombia, vale la pena detenerse en esta iniciativa que confirma de nuevo la importancia de América Latina para España
