No Shortcuts to First-World Wealth
Kore7
by Kore7  9-2-2007    1
New cluster-analysis of the world's product export space reveals the differences in connectivity and diversity between nations' production capacities as well as the very sizable developmental gaps in this network that keep poorer countries on the industrial fringes. The rich countries of the industrialized world tend to have broad portfolios of industries, and accordingly occupy large areas of the product space, usually including much of the network's core. Fast-growing developing countries such as China, Thailand, and Hungary are strong in some of those central, well-connected regions. The poorest countries, especially those in sub-Saharan Africa, tend to specialize in a few of the peripheral products—such as oil for Nigeria and copper for Zambia. EDIT :My first title was too generic ("Mapping the Wealth of Nations.")

Corruption costs Africa $148 billion a year
gingembre
by gingembre  3-4-2007    1
A bit more: "Corruption is a direct impediment to Africa's development. Corruption hurts the many and benefits the few," South Africa's Public Service Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi told delegates at the corruption conference. "It takes away resources from priority areas such as health, social development and education. It also hampers the continent's efforts to instill sound political, socio-economic and corporate governance." A similar acknowledgement of the dangers of corruption can even be heard from Sudan, which ranks fifth from bottom of the Transparency International list, ahead of only Haiti, Burma, Iraq and Guinea."

Call for G8 to help stem corruption in Africa: Zambia
gingembre
by gingembre  6-6-2007    1
President Mwanawasa's administration is promoting private sector development for third world countries, but needs help to stop corrupt leaders from stealing the aid and other monies needed for development. This is something that has frustrated me for a long time. So much money has been given to aid African countries, with the goal of delivering food, water, healthcare and education to the people and hopefully help them become self-sufficient, yet time and again corrupt "leaders" steal the money. When I read this news article today I was relieved to learn that ethical leaders in Africa are also frustrated by the corruption, and that they are trying to find ways to thwart it. Hopefully the G8 have the ethics needed to heed the plea and do the right thing.

"A Camera, 2 Kids, & A Camel" The Work of Annie Griffiths Belt
urbanlife
by urbanlife  4-30-2008    1
"As a photographer I have learned that women really do hold up half the sky; that language isn't always necessary, but touch usually is; that all people are not alike, but they do mostly have the same hopes and fears; that judging others does great harm but listening to them enriches; that it is impossible to hate a group of people once you get to know one of them as an individual." (Annie Griffiths Belt) "A Camera, Two Kids and a Camel" is a photo memoir of her life, that discloses the secrets of a peripatetic life...revealing in often hilarious detail how she managed to juggle two children, bulky cases of camera equipment and everything needed for a nurturing family life as she traveled to far-flung destinations around the world. An award-winning photojournalist and mother of two has lived a life we only dream about...to see and share the world with your family.

Acting Globally, Living Locally: Nurse Visits Over 60 Countries
urbanlife
by urbanlife  3-7-2008
Simin Marefat, an unstoppable nurse: For almost 10 years, wherever she went, she saw enormous need and a huge deficit of resources around the globe from Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan to Chile, Argentina, Peru and Bolivia. She organized a benefit in 2006 that raised $14,000: the proceeds helped Orphans of Rwanda to build a health clinic at Gisimba Memorial Center. She visited the clinic in June 2007 to see that the children all have health cards with their pictures and vaccinations and medications. They have a nurse who provides for them. She then organized a second benefit which raised $18,000: the proceeds will cover tuition for 34 Orphans of Rwanda to go to school. Fleeing Iran, her family arrived in the United States in 1986 to Hays, Kansas. It was that odyssey, beginning with escape, displacement, discrimination and eventual acceptance, Marefat says, that taught her anything was possible.
