Quotes from Voltaire
overture
by overture  6-11-2007    7
Voltaire was a French Enlightenment writer, essayist, deist and philosopher known for his wit, philosophical sport, and defense of civil liberties, including freedom of religion and the right to a fair trial. He was an outspoken supporter of social reform despite strict censorship laws in France and harsh penalties for those who broke them. A satirical polemicist, he frequently made use of his works to criticize Christian Church dogma and the French institutions of his day. -- From Wikipedia

Literal Answers to Rhetorical Questions
Aribeth
by Aribeth  3-14-2008    3
 >>People commonly ask empty rhetorical questions that rarely receive any sort of sensible answer. When you have had your surfeit of poetical whimsy and are ready for some good, hard facts, come here to be set straight. The world would be much improved if those engaging in windy musings were more often brought up short by a nice, sharp definition or a pointed rebuke. Even the fantastical William Shakespeare, asking himself "Shall I compare thee to a Summer's day?" goes on (admittedly at excessive length) to list a number of reasons for answering in the negative.Of course, some questions are so ill-framed as to admit of no sensible answer. Example: Where have you been all my life? It so happens that this question has never been addressed to me; but if it were I should be at a loss to detail the many addresses at which I have resided and worked during the span of existence of some other person, even if I knew that person's precise date of birth. Such idle musings are best ignored.<<

SEX: Misadventures in American logical reasoning.
righthand
by righthand  3-13-2008    15
Does the USA get it right, ever? Not while hypocrisy rules or the 'moral' majority. Eunuchs rule. "Pay peanuts and get monkeys." Ape eunuchs as your leaders and you get Bush! Shits afraid to fart. So no omelets on the American horizon. Yes, he was the mother of all hypocrites but where hypocrisy is the norm. The damage accruing from this will discourage any red blooded male worth his salt putting himself forward for election. So unless there's a lot more half decent female politicians out there and that's more than I've see, then America is fuc@ed for a fuc@. Grow up America and taste the 21st century! Sex between consent adults is a right. Money is the American way! ...righthand "Presidents who break the law by spying on Americans with no warrants, who torture people in violation of multiple treaties and statutes, who start hideously destructive wars based on false pretenses, who repeatedly proclaim the power to ignore laws, and who imprison people -- including Americans -- wit

Fred Phelps, Westboro Baptist Get Slammed!
Jorjor
by Jorjor  11-1-2007    3
It's about time this bastard got some comeuppance! Phelps takes homophobia to extremes. It's one thing to disapprove of or publicly denounce homosexuality, but Phelps and his family blame gays for everything from the decline of western civilization to yesterday's heartburn. I can think of no better example of religion perverted by hate. This is a real test in my belief in Voltaire’s quote, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”. At times like this, I prefer Tom Stoppard’s version: “I agree with everything you say, but I would attack to the death your right to say it.” In this case, it’s probably best to let Phelps et. al. continue to show the world what asses they are. I can’t imagine any reasonable person, left, right, conservative or liberal, agreeing with Westboro Baptist’s brand of venom. In case you're not familiar with the Phelps clan, check out some of the links in the clip.

Jefferson - A new Quote - by a deeply religious nonbeliever
syncopath
by syncopath  10-9-2007
dear clipper.. i would like 2 re-mark that these Quotes i try send from time 2 time, are an experiment 2collect sayings & maxims that may enhance wit wisdom & humor, and may correspond with the spirit of Einstein`s words: " I am a deeply religious nonbeliever. This is somewhat new kind of religion. What I see in Nature is a magnificent structure that we can comprehend only very imperfectly, and that must fill a thinking person with a feeling of humility. This is a genuinely religious feeling that nothing to do with mysticism. I don`t try to imagine a personal God; it suffices to stand in awe at the structure of the world, insofar as it allows our inadequate senses to appreciate it."
