POPSBanned Books Week During the last week of September every year, hundreds of libraries and bookstores around the country draw attention to the problem of censorship by mounting displays of challenged books and hosting a variety of events. The 2009 celebration of Banned Books Week will be held from September 26 through October 3. The purpose of this Web site is to help the public join the celebration of our freedom to read. The easiest way is to visit a participating library or bookstore. There is a list of Events, to help you find one in your community. (If you want to post information about an event in your community, please click here.) There is also a list of suggestions of other activities that will help remind people of the importance of free speech, What You Can Do. If you want further information about BannedBooksWeek.org, contact us at info@abffe.com or bbw@ala.org.

POPSAddons For Firefox - Fireshot - An invaluable web tool. This for me is as invaluable a tool for storing sharing and documenting my journey across the web. It can take screenshots or full web pages in several formats. Often I use it as a sort of read it later type thing when I come across something I just don't have the time to read at that moment. Or for capturing something on screen that cannot be saved or stored otherwise, including many forms of flash graphics. And all from an unobtrusive button like the Clipmarks one or in the context menu and /or tools menu. Try it out, it really is a fun easy to use and powerful tool. All in all I rate it 5/5 as have over a million others.

POPSInsidious Form of Thought Control a la 1984 In Near Future
. . . lines when critics of Barack Obama appeared on radio call in shows. The "authoritarian tactics being employed by the Obama campaign to stifle and intimidate its critics" were on full display. Of course, the specter of the Fairness Doctrine being passed by Congress is also another card in the deck meant to chill criticism of Barack Obama and his fellow travelers. Now comes a more insidious form of thought control a la 1984 Cass Sunstein, a Harvard Law professor who has been appointed to a shadowy post that will grant him powers that are merely mind-boggling, explicitly supports using the courts to impose a "chilling effect" on speech that might hurt someone's feelings. He thinks that the bloggers have been rampaging out of control and that new laws need to be written to corral them. Advance copies of Sunstein's new book, "On Rumors: How Falsehoods Spread, Why We Believe Them, What Can Be Done," have gone out to reviewers ahead of its September . . .

POPSWeb filters to censor video games Any infringement on the freedom of the internet is inherently a bad thing, once they start restricting sites (which has already been going on for a while) what is to stop them expanding the restrictions to other things like the alternate media etc?

POPSWeb filters to censor video games Censorship has failed to win support for actions against adults, so the govt makes an emotive effort to gain approval from those adults acting as parents. Once accepted in principle, the govt acts as if it has approval for the original plan. The games are rated to keep the sus ones out of shops because the parents buy them for the kids. Evidence says kids can develop wrong attitudes to such things as violence, so the govt can feel justified.

POPSBBC: "'Reduction' seen in abuse sites" "These websites, although reducing in number, represent an extremely serious problem," said Peter Robbins, chief executive of the IWF. In its report, the IWF said: "1,536 domains represent a problem of a scale which can be seriously targeted and significantly disrupted through international efforts." It said that about 69% of the children depicted in the images it saw were between zero and 10. About 24% involved children aged six or under. About 58% of the images seen showed the most serious sorts of abuse - involving rape or torture" ... BBC

POPSYahoo! set to bulldoze GeoCities later this year Geocities was my first net home when I got on-line full-time back in January '97. I had a page in Athens, though I can't recall which sub-division I was in or my exact address. My first site was eye-bleedingly awful. But I learned, quick, and got better. Signing up for GeoCities is where I got the handle I still use to this day. There is still some good things found on GeoCities and it's sad to see the entire site close.

POPSRemember the Lieberman "hack attack"?
Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman publicly accused Ned Lamont's campaign of deliberately crashing his Web site during the contested senate race in November 2006. As it turns out, the FBI ran a complete investigation and determined that it was the fault totally of the Lieberman campaign for using second-rate, bargain hosting services that caused the crash. What is particularly interesting is that these results were reported well before the actual vote, and yet Lieberman and his campaign refused to report the findings or apologize for the false accusations against Lamont up to this very day. The only reason the news came out now, is because a journalist got the information through the Freedom of Information Act. So here is Joe, showing what a lying scumbag he really is. First he makes a false claim against his opponent, and then when proven that the claim is false, he hides the information from the public. The man is a total disgrace, and I hope the people of Connecticut turn on
