Big Brother Monitoring Your Clipmarks, Blogs, Tweets
blueridge
by blueridge  10-21-2009
"Visible", a very extensive and sophisticated CIA-based monitoring program is in effect watching online forums, blogs, twitters, and likely Clipmarks (where influential clips are easily tabulated). After all, it's all in the public domain, where whatever you post you must own. In-Q-Tel says it wants Visible to keep track of foreign social media, and give spooks “early-warning detection on how issues are playing internationally ,” spokesperson Donald Tighe tells Danger Room.

So, how evil is Facebook, really?
enbar
by enbar  1-20-2008    3
I use Facebook every day now. I'm pretty well hooked. But this article, which talks about the intellectual pedigree (Girard), political sympathies ("Thatcherite") and financial connections (the CIA) of its board, gives me the creeps in a big way.

How to Leverage Web 2.0 & Social Media Sites to Market Your Brand & Control Your Message
tangenceinc
by tangenceinc  6-22-2009
Either the term Web 2.0 makes your blood boil, or you've taken to throwing it around like a free Google frisbee. If you're in the camp whose collective feeling is one of seething hatred, you may soon find yourself in the position of the people who didn't like mobile telephones being referred to as "cells." It appears that Web 2.0 - the concept and its controversial name - aren't going away.

Addons For Firefox - Fireshot - An invaluable web tool.
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  9-20-2009    9
This for me is as invaluable a tool for storing sharing and documenting my journey across the web. It can take screenshots or full web pages in several formats. Often I use it as a sort of read it later type thing when I come across something I just don't have the time to read at that moment. Or for capturing something on screen that cannot be saved or stored otherwise, including many forms of flash graphics. And all from an unobtrusive button like the Clipmarks one or in the context menu and /or tools menu. Try it out, it really is a fun easy to use and powerful tool. All in all I rate it 5/5 as have over a million others.

Conversation starter: gambling with followers
janclip1300
by janclip1300  8-21-2009
I think it's a really interesting topic. But also a fine topic to get an idea of today's online discussion. I wonder if and how many comments this article gets. And what does that say? That we care? Or do we consume daily news as we consume our bread: thoughtless? Is 'what's new and interesting' determined by our own followers, or do we still rely on well known sources; sites and bloggers with the most followers? In that respect, it makes sense to question the 'currency' of 'followers'. And there's another thing: the intruiging Power of Numbers. Weight. Mass. Depth. As the makers of Bet Your Followers wrote: "we’ve watched the race to accrue followers become a strange obsession." The search for followers may stand for the archetypical desire to gather an army to conquer the world, or to build a stronghold to hide behind. If so, a game like Bet Your Followers may well be the start of a new kind of online strategic games, with a highly realistic touch. Speaking about sh

From Google to youtube, from craigslist to flickr - how some of today's biggest sites looked back in the early days of their existence. Remember the days when the word Google was not interchangeable with internet? Or when every site seemed to have a Netscape icon on it? Or when Flash was still something you cleaned your floor with? Then you were clearly using the web in the mid to late 1990s when pages were rudimentary affairs containing lists of links and information. The Question of Freedom at the Open Video Conference
wildcat
by wildcat  7-14-2009    1
"Benkler argued that Open Video was indicative of an “open democracy for everyone, everywhere, all the time.” Open Video Culture, he said, would usher in the possibility for “anyone to express oneself, be creative and innovative.” Benkler also claimed that because “millions of people are now looking at problems” we will thus find millions of, “distributed solutions.” In this “free” culture, he continued, “human creativity would move to the core.” Aside from the seemingly naïve conflation of terms, exactly which society, which “everyone,” and which economic system did Benkler have in mind?" A very important read

The $600 Toilet Seat of the Spendulus
merrie

Wow. $18 million. Seems high. It leaves the less tech-savvy amongst us to ask, what is the going rate for a professional web design these days? A quick cost estimate from www.DesignQuote.net offers us a curious calculation. According to the site, the top-end estimate for a premium web design from a professional firm flush with all the bells and whistles, flash pages, search functions, digital graphics, and 500 pages of content comes in at a whopping….$192,740.
