District Judge Orders Release Of Uighur Jihadists In D.C. By Friday
merrie
by merrie  Yesterday 7:32 PM    2
This is the very nightmare scenario I warned about. The courts' steps are outrageous, but predictable and inevitable. A lot of the blame here, however, goes to the administration and the military. They have long taken the position that radical Islamic ideology is not the problem, and that we need only worry about actively those taking up arms against the United States. They don't want us to talk about jihad — the better to keep us in the dark about jihadist ideology. Thus, the government rationalizes, the Uighurs are not a threat to us, only to the Chinese. That was all the daylight the judges need to say: OK, then release them in the U.S., since no other country — except China, where they'd be persecuted — will take them. The government's self-defeating argument is preposterous. Jihadists — and there is not question that the Uighurs are jihadists — do not recognize distinctions based on the Westphalia world of nation-states.

Rates are also surging in the commercial paper market that many U.S. companies use to finance their day-to-day operations. Yields on overnight U.S. commercial paper jumped 0.94 percentage point to 3.68 percent. `The Federal Reserve must now act as a clearing house'' for banks and ``must also take another bold step: outright purchases of commercial paper, said Bill Gross, manager of the world's biggest bond fund at Newport Beach, California-based Pacific Investment Management Co. Europe's Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index having its steepest intraday decline since 1987 and emerging markets, until now the locomotives of the world economy, hit particularly hard: exchanges in Russia and Brazil halted trading. One less complicated step would be for central banks to lower rates in concert. Traders are betting that the Bank of England will lower rates at a meeting this week, and that the Fed will cut its benchmark by at least half a point at or before an Oct. 28-29 gathering.

Congress approval rating just 10%
dl211
by dl211  10-3-2008    1
"A political establishment held in higher regard may have been able to hold together some kind of coalition of the willing," wrote Joel Achenbach in the Washington Post. "But distrust of the nation's leaders, from the leaders of Congress to the president, foreclosed that possibility." This was not mere rhetoric. Congress's public approval rating was down to 18% before the crisis hit. By some estimates, it is now 10% and falling. Washington has seen a "throw the bums out" mood before, notably Newt Gingrich's 1994 anti-government "Republican revolution". But this is something else. Like some others, Gingrich is calling for the resignation of Hank Paulson, the treasury secretary, for presiding over a train wreck and then failing to persuade people why $700bn was needed to get back on the rails.

Biden: "I Have Been Field Dressed!"
merrie
by merrie  10-2-2008    1
Update: 10:20 - Quite literally in the same breath, Joe laments, "I'm not gonna change..." and then goes on to boast about his record of change. Update: 10:24 - After an unsteady beginning, Palin seemed to get consistenly more comfortable (and more effective throughout the debate). In the home stretch, she's managing to stay on positive notes, enunciating her and McCain's strong points, and thus keeping possession of the ball, leaving Biden to spend much of his times grouchily refuting her. Update: 10:28 - On the final question regarding "changing the tone" in Washington, Joe claims he has never - not since his freshman year anyway - questioned the motives (or opposed to the judgment) of a fellow Senator. Fact check away. Update: 10:38 - Was anyone else bracing for an awkward "hot mic" moment after the debate ended and they left both candidates' mics open?

ACORN Is A Bad Seed
merrie
by merrie  10-2-2008    1
In a letter to ACORN, the State Board of Elections reported that 56% of the voter registration applications ACORN turned in were ineligible. Further, a full 35% were not submitted in a timely manner, as required by law. The State Board of Elections also commented on what appeared to be evidence of intentional voter fraud. "Additionally,” they wrote, “information appears to have been altered on some applications where information given by the applicant in one color ink has been scratched through and re-entered in another color ink. Any alteration of a voter registration application is a Class 5 Felony in accordance with § 24.2-1009 of the Code of Virginia." WA 2007 Three ACORN employees pleaded guilty, and four more were charged, in the worst case of voter registration fraud in Washington state history. More than 2,000 fraudulent voter registration cards were submitted by the group during a voter registration drive.

Sen Coburn Says Root Of The Problem Is Political Greed In Congress
merrie
by merrie  10-2-2008    3
.....members of Congress chose to ignore the problem and distract themselves with unprecedented amounts of pork-barrel spending.” “Taxpayers who want to ensure that this doesn’t happen again should send a very clear message to Washington that it’s time for Congress to live within its means and restore the principles of limited government and free markets that made this country great. I will do everything in my power to ensure that this bill does not lead us down a slippery slope of European style socialism and slow economic growth. I will also promise taxpayers that I will do everything in my power to block what I expect will be hundreds of attempts by politicians in Washington to continue business-as-usual borrowing and spending in the next Congress. In a time of crisis, American families have to make hard choices between budget priorities. So should Congress."

Veep Debate Moderator Writing Book on Obama

Yes, it is going to be that fawning. Ifill profiles” three other prominent (liberal) politicians on their success. Note I said liberal. Aside from token mentions of Colin Powell, the excludes Codi Rice, Clarence Thomas, j. C. Watts, Michael Steele Alan Keyes, and other prominent conservatives. The book focuses on how African-Americans on the political left have benefited from the civil rights movement. As near as I can tell that translates to celebrating a presidential candidate who is the product of affirmative action while dismissing African-Americans on the political right as…what? Sell outs? Anyway, the media does not even make a pretense of non-bias, do they? If you think this should not stand, e-mail: Janet H. Brown, Executive Director of the Debates Commission: jb@debates.org and let her know. I did. YouTube vid :49

The Failed Bailout's Fallout for McCain
DanaGarrett
by DanaGarrett  9-30-2008
"I went to Washington last week to make sure that the taxpayers of Ohio and across this great country were not left footing the bill for mistakes made on Wall Street and in Washington," McCain said at a campaign rally in the swing state of Ohio. McCain shows up in DC, has a few conversations with Congressional leaders, is seen walking through a lobby in the congressional building and tries to create the illusion that he brokered an economy-saving deal. It was all smoke and mirrors. Worse, there was no deal. McCain had no sway with the House Republicans. He failed to deliver what he promised. That failure is fair game.

Appearing Sunday on ABC's "This Week," McCain said he had been too busy "working on all the other stuff" to cast a vote. Asked if he would have voted against it, McCain said he would have tried to cut the "outrageous pork-barrel spending" in the bill, but "probably would have ended up voting for it." Guess it's more about the drama and grandstanding. Is this what a McBush Presidency would look like? Obama missed the vote too but then he also avoided the grandstanding.

I'm not sure Lindsey's been paying attention. As I pointed out in the previous post, McCain did phone it in -- literally. He never went back to DC after the debate. It wasn't until McCain left Washington that something got done. Politico reports , "As his colleagues worked on the deal at the Capitol Saturday night, McCain and his wife, Cindy, dined with Sen. Joe Lieberman and his wife, Hadassah, at Cafe Mozu inside Washington’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel." Sounds vital.

Senator McCain Shoves Bush-Paulson "Bailout" Under The Bus
merrie
by merrie  9-26-2008
All they needed was John McCain to put the deal through. This deal, by the way, had 20% of the 700 billion going to ACORN. ACORN is a "community organization that Barack Obama used to work with and continues to support. They are under investigation concerning voter fraud. Why would any bill for bailing out Wall Street have a provision for funding this far-left organization? I don't know why President Bush is putting his name on this horrible policy, but I am thankful that Senator McCain had the guts to stand against this bailout and give Boehnor and the house a chance to fix the mess on Wall Street (although I personally think that we should let the markets fall or rise where they may).

JPMorgan Buys WaMu Deposits; Regulators Seize Thrift
merrie
by merrie  9-26-2008
David Bonderman's TPG Inc., which led a $7 billion capital infusion for WaMu earlier this year, lost most of its initial $2 billion investment. TPG, based in Forth Worth, Texas, said in a statement yesterday it was ``dissatisfied with the loss'' and that the WaMu investment was a ``small part of assets.'' New York-based JPMorgan, which separately announced plans to raise $8 billion by selling common stock, had its outlook lowered to negative by Moody's Investors Service. Moody's left its Aa2 rating on JPMorgan unchanged. JPMorgan won't acquire WaMu's liabilities, including claims by shareholders and subordinated and senior debt holders, the FDIC said. JPMorgan paid $10 a share for Bear Stearns in March as the New York-based securities firm teetered on the brink of bankruptcy. ``Having worked with Kerry Killinger for 10 years, I still absolutely cannot fathom where or why he went wrong, and what caused him to lead the company into taking the kinds of risks that they did.''
