POPSNew breed of spycams pose threat to privacy " You probably don't know this, but Adobe's Flash Player browser plug-in, which many people install to view Flash video clips and adverts on the web, has a Settings Manager that has two settings that control whether websites you access, and potentially other Internet users, can turn on your webcam and microphone remotely - with or without asking your permission. In addition, the Internet VoIP and chat application Skype also has some settings that can control whether and how a webcam in or connected to your computer is enabled when using it."

POPS10 Free Office Software Apps We love "free stuff" - I use a few of these apps, and they are great. I think everyone already knows about Skype...do you know about the others?

POPSGovernment Hype Against Skype and VoIP--"Security Threat" It's not just Russia that is opposed to private internet telephony applications. Buried deep in the article the real reason comes out: Delegates at the meeting also warned that it has been impossible for police to spy on VoIP conversations The NSA has admitted the same thing here --enough to tap the hacker market to find a "solution". (Offering big money to those who would help break our privacy, for their own gain). Too bad. It's not only cheap to place calls this way, but so far very private.

POPSCybersecurity Act: President Could Shut Down Internet The language is very vague and the powers broad which would also create another "Czar" of Cybersecurity. (This Czar thing must end. Americans abhor dictators but the government increasingly creates them). The plea of "necessity" again being used for dictatorial powers. The real danger is this: In an "emergency" the internet would be abuzz with people trying to find the truth, but all government powers of FREE PRESS AND FREE SPEECH through the world's largest free medium would be SHUT DOWN. All "news" and information regarding said event would be carried by the (very untrustworthy) MSM Networks and radio and print controlled by newswires. ONLY THE ALTERNATIVE MEDIA would be abolished then under the word of one man, a VIRTUAL DICTATOR. The "official story" of the "emergency" would be the only thing published, perfect for propaganda and controlling all Americans. What about VOIP phone service used by millions, including business?

POPSInternet Access Without Electricity, Connectivity or Phone Services. No Matter Where You Are. what open source collaboration can do.. The terminals includes access to web browsing, email, voip, office, multimedia, software development and web development tools as well as 15,000 other applications. Wifi coverage spans a 2-mile radius, with no fuel costs, no polluting emissions and a long lifespan of up to 20 years with proper maintenance. The entire system, in fact, operates on about the same amount of power as a 100-watt light bulb, GNUveau says.

POPSTwitter: clique-y or fluid? Just from my own anecdotal evidence, I'd wager Dave Pollard's proposition about the male/female split on Twitter friend diversity.

POPSThings Didn't Happen In 2007 Everybody oohed and ahed over Google's new presentation offering, but then went right on using PowerPoint. Because that's what you use for presentations, everybody knows it. Google gets an 'A' for effort and for presenting alternatives, but as Microsoft is learning with Vista, the public seems rather reluctant to change the status quo. Unless it's for Apple products, that is.

POPSOPPOSE "Net Neutrality" And The Misnamed "Internet Freedom Preservation Act" H.R. 5353 As Jason Wright of the Institute for Liberty noted, "The leftist MoveOn.org coalition claims that so-called 'Net Neutrality' rules are the 'First Amendment' for the internet. In fact, the exact opposite is true. The unprecedented regulation MoveOn lobbies for limits innovation by restricting certain businesses from the option of seeking more reliable connections to support advanced services like VoIP or IPTV."

POPSFCC Questions Comcast About Interference With File-Sharing Traffic
And Vuze Inc., a company that distributes video using BitTorrent file-sharing technology, later filed a separate complaint, asking the FCC to clarify how much power Internet service providers have in controlling traffic on their lines. In an investigation last year, The Associated Press found that Comcast in some cases hindered file sharing by subscribers who used BitTorrent. The findings, first reported Oct. 19, confirmed claims by users who also noticed interference with other file-sharing applications. Do you block access to peer-to-peer applications like BitTorrent? No. We do not block access to any Web site or applications, including BitTorrent. Our customers use the Internet for downloading and uploading files, watching movies and videos, streaming music, sharing digital photos, accessing numerous peer-to-peer sites, VOIP applications like Vonage, and thousands of other applications online. Comcast service maintenance scheduled for Jan 15 and 16 12am to 7am ET
