POPSA Little Welcome Home from the Torture Masters "As they ridiculed me, they took delight most in mocking letters I had received from readers in England. I had now been without food and water and the toilet for 12 hours, and having been made to stand, my legs buckled. I vomited and passed out. All I remember is one of them gouging, scraping and clawing with his nails at the tender flesh beneath my eyes. He scooped my head and dug his fingers in near the auditory nerves between my head and eardrum . The pain became sharper as he dug in two fingers at a time. Another man had his combat boot on my neck, pressing into the hard floor. I lay there for over an hour. The room became a menagerie of pain, sound and terror."

POPSWhat It's Like To Be A Bat Researchers are able to draw correlations between how bats and humans process information to perform functions. Both are mammals having the same basic brain organization, which leads to obvious comparisons.

POPSWhy Army Officers Won't Speak Out
Personally, I think it's because many officers have no idea just how badly their voices are needed in the national debate over what to do in Iraq and Afghanistan. In my experience, most people (not just soldiers) are completely unaware as to how absolutely clueless most politicians--and the general public--are when it comes to the wars. They don't realize that they can actually make a difference by speaking out. I think many officers are terrified of saying something wrong that could be construed as "buddy-fucking." They don't want to let their soldiers down , they don't want to embarrass their peers and higher-ups. It's easier just to stay quiet. I know this one's true, because I dealt with it myself. Other than that, I'm at a loss. We all know the officer corps is frustrated. We know the Congress is uninformed to a large degree. And we know the Congress makes decisions that affect the officer corps (and the entire military). So what's the deal? Where is everybody?

POPSThe true heart of the conservative movement Of course as tends to be the case with Helms' most repugnantly racist bile, he said that a good ways back in the past. But even at that time, most Americans managed not to be repugnant racists. But not Helms. And unlike a lot of people who did take the white supremacist line in the 1950s and 60s, Helms never apologized and, indeed, never backed down doing things like mounting a filibuster against making Martin Luther King Day into a federal holiday. Remarkably, mainstream American conservatives are eager to tell us that this man is their hero. Even more remarkably, you sometimes hear conservatives talk about reaching out to black voters.

POPSBeauty And The Release "All they've ever been is shut down in their lives, and now they have this chance to verbally emote," said Joe Loya, a senior staffer who works at several of the Walden facilities throughout the state. Like any beauty pageant, it was also about primping. Just half an hour before it started, the upstairs hallway was full of dark red lips and masses of hair as women hurriedly tugged at borrowed dresses and pulled on strapped heels. "

POPSJesse Helms is Dead at At Age 86 He is low on my list of likable ex-Senators. A cultural conservative to the max. But I do give him credit for putting the kabash on the proposed Reagan-Ford co-presidency proposal. I once met a female former ex-lobbyist who told me "Back in the day Jesse Helms was the biggest ass pincher in Washington." She alleged to be one of his pinchees. I wish I had something good to say about the man, but I don't. I'm sorry for his passing. I suppose the fact that he died on July 4 will play as a "sign" from the Almighty among the cultural conservatives.

POPSSinger Opts for 'Black National Anthem' Over 'Star-Spangled Banner' I guarantee you that this is what all America can expect if Obama is elected President. It's just the beginning. Vote for him if you will. We still have the freedom to vote and choose. The radicals have been waiting a long time to receive/give reparations and the Presidency may be the ultimate payback. I could so easily have voted for an American who was black....but this one carries waaay too much baggage and hangers-on with an ax to grind.

POPSVoice Of Truth Oh what I would do to have The kind of faith it takes To climb out of this boat I'm in Onto the crashing waves To step out of my comfort zone Into the realm of the unknown where Jesus is And He's holding out His hand But the waves are calling out my name And they laugh at me Reminding me of all the times I've tried before and failed The waves they keep on telling me Time and time again. 'Boy, you'll never win!' 'You'll never win!' Chorus: But the voice of truth tells me a different story The voice of truth says, 'Do not be afraid!' The voice of truth says, 'This is for My glory' Out of all the voices calling out to me I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth Oh what I would do to have The kind of strength it takes to stand before a giant With just a sling and a stone Surrounded by the sound of a thousand warriors Shaking in their armor Wishing they'd have had the strength to stand But the giant's calling out my name And he laughs at me

POPSChristian Child Abuse caught on tape Listen to this audio of a 9 year old girl being mentally abused. She is being forced to accept that Harry Potter put the devil in her. This is child abuse. People like this needs to be locked up, but because of a taboo we allow on discussing religion people like this are allowed to continue, often encouraged. Pardon me while I go throw up now

POPSAdmiral Mullen is Wrong There are some soldiers that are adamantly against an activist foreign policy. They are individuals that would share the philosophy in this regard with Patrick Buchanan. Foreign policy is an area that falls completely within the purview of the Executive Branch. It would be completely inappropriate for a soldier to "campaign" for one of the candidates because that candidate is less interventionist or more interventionist. No we get to the "elephant in the living room." I am a senior Officer in the United States Army who has attended the senior service colleges. I have served in a multitude of command, instructor and staff positions over two decades.

POPSWesley Clark Takes Swipe at McCain's Military Experience Probably not the smartest thing to say, but the fact is that McCain's claim that his military experience makes him a better leader is kind of a sham. McCain never had command and never made strategy decisions. Just being in the military doesn't automatically give you leadership experience -- you kind of have to had actually led. Which, BTW, Clark has done.

POPSIroquois Blueprint for the U.S. Our constitution has many Iroquois features. Iroquois lawmakers didn't go to war. Civilian and military rule was separate. The Iroquois had no royalty -- no hereditary rule. Their nations could naturalize new citizens. The League didn't just conquer other nations. It could also admit them to membership. We didn't adopt the Iroquois unicameral system. They had only one council. Franklin fought for that. Because he lost, we have both the senate and the house. Franklin also wanted to let soldiers elect their own officers. That's what the Iroquois did. He lost on that one, too. Still, our constitution is a fine piece of engineering design. We looked at the European kingdoms we'd left behind. And we looked at these people who'd governed themselves so well for so long. In the end Canassatego and the Iroquois tipped the scales in shaping our way of life. And we can be very glad they did.

POPSCould McCain be a victim of McCain Feingold? First it was Obama refusing "public funds" which allows him to raise as much money from as many people as he wants without limitations, and now the Supes have ruled that a multi-billionaire can in effect purchase a political office. It would appear from this 'casual observer' McCain Feingold was an attempt to 'fix' elections by controlling which candidate actually has enough money to let their voice be heard while drowning out anyone else. This is the adverse to what the intent of the law was meant to do, but in all reality I believe it is exactly what the laws sponsors actually intended. McCain therefore may fall victim to his own sponsored bill.
