Scientists Say We Can See Sound
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  Yesterday 6:08 AM    3
Recordings from 49 neurons responsible for the earliest stages of visual processing, researchers found activation that mirrored the behavior. That is, when the sound was played, the neurons reacted as if there had been a stronger light, at a speed that can only be explained by a direct connection between the ear and eye brain regions, said researcher Ye Wang of the University of Texas in Houston. The study presents the first evidence that a sensory cell can process an alternative sensation, said head researcher Pascal Barone of the Université Paul Sabatier in Toulouse, France, who discovered a contender for the anatomical connection in 2002.

Obama's Indonesian Registration Document and Media Cover-Up
merrie
by merrie  8-14-2008    2
Reasons for censorship? The Associated Press and the rest of the mainstream media probably had this photo of the registration document in their hands or databases but refused to touch it. After CNN published the facts that FOX incorrectly reported that the school was a madrassa, the entire issue of Barack Obama's name of 'Barry Soetero' was side stepped. It was probably decided that this material or photo shouldn't be available to the general public. (The same idea was probably applied to any audio or visual media related to a separate issue concerning an interview between Barack Obama and Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times.) Therefore the image lay untouched and untranslated in the Daylife.com photo repository for 18 months.

Neurobiologists Discover Individuals Who 'Hear' Movement
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-7-2008    1
"We might find that motion processing centers of the visual cortex are more interconnected with auditory brain regions than previously thought, even in the 'normal' brain," Saenz says. "At this point, very little is known about how the auditory and visual processing systems of the brain work together. Understanding this interaction is important because in normal experience, our senses work together all the time."

The Sound of Sight
Mohir
by Mohir  8-5-2008    1
Both groups judged auditory patterns accurately about 85 percent of the time, the researchers report in the August 5 issue of Current Biology. On the visual trials, nonsynesthetes’ judgments fell to nearly chance levels, a result that corroborates other research showing that most people are better at judging auditory patterns than assessing visual patterns. In contrast, synesthetes—who reported hearing sounds such as beeps or taps in time with the visual signals—distinguished matching from nonmatching rhythms 75 percent of the time.

Liquid flowing on surface of Titan

Liquid ethane. They say their observations suggest the lake is evaporating due to the existence of a beach where the lake merges with the bright shoreline. I'm sure there are some some big king tides on Titan. There's the big drawcard Saturn but all of those other moons would make drafting a tide chart a nightmare.
