POPSTim McGirk, friend to the Taliban and promotor of the 'secondary PTSD' defense for the murderer Hasa Noah Pollak at Commentary has discovered that Mr. McGirk has a rather interesting history: This shouldn’t be surprising coming from Tim McGirk. He went to Afghanistan after 9/11, had Thanksgiving with the Taliban, and wrote a long piece for National Geographic about what a great time he had and how we’re all just human beings doing our thing on this big blue marble, so let’s not judge. Then he went to Iraq and singlehandedly created the Haditha Massacre hoax. Then he went to Jerusalem and spent a few years slandering Israel. Now he’s trafficking in pop psychology on behalf of a likely domestic jihadist. It’s been quite a career.

POPSNature's Ability To Amaze, Humor, Inspire Awe: National Geographic's Best Photos of 2009 These photos are from a photo piece I did on Instablogs this morning. I had to Amplify them as well so that everyone here could enjoy them. Thanks to my good friend and colleague, Lori J. Paul, (Amplog = Virtu-Legal) for alerting me to these wonderful photographs. There is much more in National Geographic's photo galleries, so if you're interested, check it out. There is a link in the text below to the galleries.

POPSWant to Lose Weight? Try Sleeping! Sounds pretty simple right? Then why do so many of us view regular sleep as something not all that important? "I’ll just make up the sleep on the weekend" we say. Well, unfortunately studies are showing it just does not work like that when it comes to sleep...

POPSFood Critic Murders Baboon: Needed Fodder for His Column?! While admitting there was no good excuse for his action, he nonetheless tries to explain: "I noticed that, when it was alive, I thought about the baboon as a thing. Now he’s dead, I’m posthumously anthropomorphising him, and that was one of the reasons I killed. I wanted to get a sense of what it might be like to kill someone, a stranger." Stop. Breathe. I note my first reaction: Excruciating execution for this guy, preferably slowly bleeding to death in front of his buddies, sounds like a good idea. Exhale. Pause. Next reaction: What the heck was he thinking? What sick person would find it perfectly acceptable to write about his urge to explore killing primates in a food column? Is he so disengaged from life and his place in it that he thinks this is witty? Educational? Cool?

POPSThe terrorists at Club Gitmo don't want to leave Obvious. What else more could they want? They have personal chefs, TVs, remote controls, beach volleyball, a library overlooking the ocean, scenic views, free laundry service, new prayer rugs to pray to Allah.....and they're getting the H1N1 vaccine before you. The libs want them out of Cuban Clown College as long as they're nowhere near their Manhattan penthouses or vacation spots in the Vineyard. As if splashing water on their damn faces is going to scare them off.....PUH-LEASE. Gitmo should be rebranded so that liberals wouldn’t reflexively scream “TORTURE!” every time they heard it’s name. How about "Misfired Martyrs Motel" or "Viva la Incarceracion!"?

POPSWe are all multiple personalities: or, Why "I" don't know what's good for "me" More: Such contradictions arise all the time. If you ask people which makes them happier, work or vacation, they will remind you that they work for money and spend the money on vacations. But if you give them a beeper that goes off at random times, and ask them to record their activity and mood each time they hear a beep, you’ll likely find that they are happier at work. Work is often engaging and social; vacations are often boring and stressful. Similarly, if you ask people about their greatest happiness in life, more than a third mention their children or grandchildren, but when they use a diary to record their happiness, it turns out that taking care of the kids is a downer—parenting ranks just a bit higher than housework, and falls below sex, socializing with friends, watching TV, praying, eating, and cooking.

POPSDurbin Supports Burris Ethics Probe (Burris was 60th vote for Stimulus Bill)
The Illinois Democrat says he wants to be fair and review all of the documents, transcripts and statements involved. Tom Elia questions the timing: Now that it looks almost certain that Illinois Sen. Roland Burris lied under oath about his contacts with impeached Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (and had that perjury covered up by another Chicago Dem for over one week while the vote occurred), one has to wonder why President Obama reversed his position, and put out the word for the US Senate to approve Burris under the dubious Blagojevich-related circumstances. Well, besides the embarrassing circumstances of his former Senate seat being up for sale to highest bidder being in the news, there is the matter of the passage of Obama’s stimulus package in the Senate. Sen. Burris was the 60th vote on the stimulus bill with Sen. Kennedy ailing and not able to vote himself. I wonder if anyone in the press will follow up on this?

POPSrecipe: Clean-out-the-fridge frittata More: This particular frittata got wrapped up and taken to Seward Park for a dinner picnic, which is almost as good an idea as Clean Out the Fridge Frittata. Imagine a dinner party where you invite all the interesting people you don’t see nearly enough, but with the added benefit of not having to clean your house. It’s genius, I tell you. Throw in some blankets, some grapes, salad, bread, cheese, a bottle of wine, and cookies or cupcakes (or in our case, both!) and you have the makings of a very fine evening indeed. IMG_1674 As an extra bonus, when at last it gets dark and you have to pull yourself away from the park and your friends, you’ll have a much cleaner fridge to come home to. I'm my world, that's never a bad thing.

POPSU.S. Fails To Make Top 10 Quality of Life Index Sure, it's easy to claim a higher quality of life when you live in a place like France, where you get 30 days of paid vacation every year. Never mind that their productivity numbers nearly equal ours. Where's the index for rugged individualism and personal responsibility? How good do ya think them Frenchies would do on that, huh? They just don't have the stuff to accept a shorter life expectancy and crappy health care. (The lifespan for African-Americans in the former French city of New Orleans is about the same as that of people living in North Korea.) But, hey, they're not who we mean when we talk about Americans, anyway. I don't want your damn pinko health care. And keep your hands off my gun. Oh, and, U.S. outta the U.N., dammit!

POPSTaxpayers Get Soaked Private insurance companies were reluctant to sell insurance to those of us who build on the edges of oceans, and were they to offer it, they'd charge an arm and a leg to cover the risk. But this wasn't a problem for me, because you offered to insure my house. I know you didn't do it personally, but you, as a taxpayer, are the guarantee behind federal flood insurance. Should a big storm wipe out half the coast, you'll cover our losses — up to a quarter-million dollars. Thanks — we appreciate it — but what a dumb policy. The subsidized insurance goes to affluent homeowners on both coasts — from Malibu Beach, where movie stars live, to Kennebunkport where the Bush family has a vacation home, to Hyannisport, where the Kennedy family has a summer home, to the Hamptons, where I bought my house. There is no limit on how many times the government will pay if a house keeps washing away.

POPSIs social media making us safer? I suppose this may seem obvious, but i hadn't really thought about it. I've heard talk about how people shouldn't post things like "on vacation" on twitter because criminals can use that info to go rob your house. But the idea that people have instantaneous ways to get information and reach out definitely suggests that we could become more efficient in crime avoidance. Thinking that a great idea for a new service would be some kind of social network 911 call. Press a certain button and automatically post an alert to the following people via twitter, facebook, sms, etc. Then, using GPS, the people could get your message and your location.

POPSUS should bring Roman Polanski to justice More: Much has been made of the fact that Polanski's victim, now 45, has said she no longer feels any anger toward him and does not want to see him jailed. But it's irrelevant what the victim thinks and feels as a grown woman. What's important is what she thought and felt at age 13, when the crime was committed. Those who argue that there's something unjust about Polanski's arrest are essentially accepting his argument that it's possible for a 13-year-old girl, under the influence of alcohol and drugs, to "consent" to sex with a man in his 40s. Or maybe his defenders are saying that drugging and raping a child is simply not such a big deal.… This isn't about a genius who is being hounded for flouting society's hidebound conventions. It's about a rich and powerful man who used his fame and position to assault — in every sense, to violate — an innocent child. And it's about a man who ran away rather than face the consequences of his actions.

POPSBeware kids, while you’re singing his praises, Obama wants to get rid of Summer vacation While I think that it is a good idea to talk about modifying the 180-day, September-June school calendar that has become as much an American tradition as fireworks on the 4th of July, I don’t quite see the need for this to become a national issue, or for the Federal Government to mandate that schools modify their calendars based on a decision made by a bureaucrat in the Department of Education. As with most things in the education field, this is a matter best left to school boards at the local and state level and to the parents of the children being educated. But then again, what the hell does Obama care about American tradition....unless he's apologizing for it....

POPSDay in the Life of Joe Six-Pack Republican One thing I enjoy most about people is our ability to poke fun at each other. Political humor especially intrigues me because despite the fact that we are all striving for what’s best for our families we each have our own ideals on how to best do it. ColoradoRight clipped a list of 21 Ways to Be A Good Liberal http://clipmarks.com/clipmark/26BD1DF0-B8CF-4F7A-A2CE-E9704D0719D7/ In the interest of equal opportunity, here’s one for the other side. Enjoy as we hear a few final words of ‘wisdom’ from Joe Six-Pack Republican. “Joe turns on a radio talk show. The host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. (He doesn't tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day) Joe agrees. "We don't need those big government liberals ruining our lives; after all, I'm a self made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."
