closeupman

This s/w allows you to create alias for ANY folder. This is similar to what the web does with using names instead of IP address (e.g. www.cnn.com instead of 122.1.2.2). This program allows you to name say, c:\my documents\my pictures\family photos\wedding pics as simply Wedding Pics. Then whenever you want to get to that folder simply right click anywhere on the desktop, choose folder guide, then choose Wedding Pics. 3 whole clicks! You can also use this in 'Save As' dialogs. Simply right click in the area where the folders are and do the same thing. I don't know why Microsoft didn't include this as a default tool. I wonder if it's in vista or not. A great program that does something right....and it's FREE!!!

How Electric Cars Could Save the Grid
gingembre
by gingembre  12-30-2007    5
Benefits of the "Vehicle to Grid" project being developed by researchers at the University of Delaware "electric vehicles could do more than provide backup energy. If just a quarter of the nation's cars were electric -- about 50 million cars -- the power capacity of those batteries would be equal to 700 gigawatts, the entire power production capacity in the United States today" "For the system to have the most value, electric cars need to be equipped with a high, 80-amp/240-volt plug -- something a little more powerful than the plug on an electric dryer. (An electrician can install the corresponding outlet into any home.) But most of the existing electric hybrid cars come equipped with a low, 15-amp, 110-volt plug." "the low-amp plugs work...but if the electric car owner is selling electricity back to the grid, they want to sell as much as possible. A 15-amp plug could net a car owner about $400 year, whereas an 80-amp plug could net $4,000"

Save the Holocene!

"I get the utility of using the idea of the Anthropocene to provoke recognition of the mind-bending reality that we are transforming the very planet on which we walk. (emphasis mine) Where the Anthropocene as a concept breaks down, it seems to me, is in the implications it raises, particularly among certain crowds who seem to be saying with increasing frequency, "well, dude, we're in the Anthropocene, anything goes." A worthwhile and important read

How the Personal Genome Project Could Unlock the Mysteries of Life
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-27-2008
...You would very quickly begin to see meaningful and powerful correlations between particular genetic sequences and particular physical characteristics, from height and hair color to disease risk and personality. Church has done more than imagine such an undertaking; he has launched it: The Personal Genome Project, an effort to make those correlations on an unprecedented scale, began last year with 10 volunteers and will soon expand to 100,000 participants. It will generate a massive database of genomes, phenomes, and even some omes in between.

Cookies, not torture, did the trick
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  5-28-2009    9
We used chess, not waterboarding, on the Nazis. And honestly, there seem to be people out there who, even if they believed a cookie and a pat on the head worked, wouldn't support it. Because you "showing weakness" is bad. Being seen as strong is more important that actual results. It's also buying into the racist meme that "Those people only respect violence". Beware of all those in whom the urge to punish is strong. -Goethe

Do economists need brains?
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-31-2008
For the past four years, a group of leading neuroeconomists and neuroscientists has met to refine questions about the brain and economic behaviour. Researchers trained in both neuroscience and economics are entering the field. Daniel Kahneman, a Princeton University psychologist who in 2002 won the Nobel prize in economics for his contribution to behavioural economics, is an enthusiastic supporter of the new field. “In many areas of economics, it will dominate, because it works,” says Mr Kahneman. Interesting read...

balthazarus
by balthazarus  12-31-2008
The human-generated electricity will deliver enough juice to keep the bulbs blazing during the televised portion of the evening’s broadcast, or about 15 minutes. Afterward, the sign will revert to the utility grid for power for the remainder of the night. The numerical display isn’t the only New Year’s Eve sign in Times Square getting a green makeover: This year’s dropping ball, made of crystal triangles and illuminated by 32,256 LED bulbs, is 20 percent more energy-efficient than last year’s glowing sphere. Gre(en)at idea :)
