POPSAlan comes to Stephen's rescue Stephen Fry is one of the wittiest people I have ever come across ~ it's sad to see that even a celebrity such as him can be hard hit by depression.

POPSBig Brother Monitoring Your Clipmarks, Blogs, Tweets "Visible", a very extensive and sophisticated CIA-based monitoring program is in effect watching online forums, blogs, twitters, and likely Clipmarks (where influential clips are easily tabulated). After all, it's all in the public domain, where whatever you post you must own. In-Q-Tel says it wants Visible to keep track of foreign social media, and give spooks “early-warning detection on how issues are playing internationally ,” spokesperson Donald Tighe tells Danger Room.

POPSA Picture is Worth a Thousand Words Fundamentally, there are only two ways of coordinating the economic activities of millions. One is central direction involving the use of coercion - the technique of the army and of the modern totalitarian state. The other is voluntary cooperation of individuals - the technique of the marketplace. Milton Friedman The other day, someone told me the difference between a democracy and a "people's democracy." It's the same as the difference between a jacket and a straitjacket. Ronald Wilson Reagan

POPSTwitter Talks Data With Microsoft, Google — All Things Digital All this without tarnishing the noisy service as a shill, because it lets you listen to only what you want. The deals would be nonexclusive and may not happen, All Things Digital reports " which only feeds the casual cred Twitter has been cultivating, taking its time about coming up with a business model that produces operating revenue, while it rakes in VC money at a level that values the three-year-old private company at about $1 billion. The “Let them do it” philosophy works like a charm for Twitter, whose content comes from the general public and whose best interfaces come from third-party developers making full use of the company’s freely available API. Along with the recently announced “lists” initiative, Twitter seems to be carefully setting the table so that partners can leverage its data " and the way it is organized " to enter new markets, while it sits back and maintains a server farm.

POPSTexting instead of sleeping
This is so disturbing. Social media has such wonderful potential, but seeing it used like this is depressing. Call me crazy but i would strongly consider advocating legislation that caps the number of text messages, tweets, status updates, etc. that a minor is allowed to send. God knows how many of them text while driving, putting us all at great risk. Between twitter and text messaging, society's use of social tools to stay connected 24x7 all day, every day just makes no sense to me. Seeing tweets about what people are doing, who they're with, where they're going, what they're eating, what they're watching just makes no sense to me. Who cares! Is there no joy in doing something anymore unless we can instantly tweet about it, upload a photo of it or broadcast it to our 'friends' on facebook? I think there is so much to gain from social media...so much to learn. But right now i feel like people are drunk on the idea and using it extreme ways that will look foolish in hinds

POPSQaddafi/Gadhafi/Gaddafi/Qadhafi Brings His Stand Up Show To The UN
The View From Twitter Mark Knoller: If Qadhafi ever gives up the de facto leadership of Libya, could you see a talk show in his future? Andy Levy: Qaddafi: We are all pirates. Except for the pirates. America? Pirates. Israel? Pirates. Pirates? Not pirates. Ben Smith: RT @mkoshark: Gadhafi is set to close his #UN speech with a shameless plug to watch his stint on next season’s Dancing With the Stars Chris Lehmann: I’m assuming the aide responsible for giving an Attaboy to Qaddafi after that performance is now planning to defect. Mike Madden: RT @owillis:Qadafi: so this is what @glennbeck sounds like in a diff language. Jake Tapper: AND…Qadaffi’s done. Roughly 90 minutes of sheer poetry. Ben Smith: Qaddafi: You are the ones who hate the Jews. Mark Knoller: At 90 minutes into the Qadhafi speech, 2nd shift of UN translators come on duty. Mark Knoller: Qadhafi even has his own health care reform: accuses capitalist countries & companie

POPS We Are The Change ~ We Are The Party of HELL NO!!!
But the movement has given birth to a new generation of movers and shakers who have rejected establishment partisan politics for nimble, Internet-facilitated, issues-based advocacy. The success of the Tea Party movement and its allies/successors shows that there’s no monopoly on “community organizing.” You are the change we’ve been praying for. March on! *** Livecam of the D.C. rally here. Wow! The Tea Party Express blog is here. 12:34pm Eastern: Police estimate 1.2 million in attendance. ABC News reporting crowd at 2 million, tweets Tabitha Hale from D.C. Teeny, tiny fringe, huh? Video highlights via Ed Frank: 9/12 Taxpayer Tea Party March on Washington, DC However big it was, it was bigger than expected. From the NYT: “Many came on their own and were not part of an organization or group. But the magnitude of the rally took the authorities by surprise, with throngs of people streaming from the White House to Capitol Hill for more than three hours.

POPSInternet Plagiarism Cops I remember the first time I deliberately plagiarized a paper for school. In the pre-Internet 5th grade I copied word for word out of the World Book Encyclopedia and turned it in as a report on Abraham Lincoln. I did not get caught and I have felt guilty ever since. Looking back (way back), I think the reason I copied the content instead of doing the creative work myself is because the subject was just flat out boring. I had Lincoln overload. "Teach me about something I don't already know...already," I thought. When I did it, I KNEW it was wrong. See, "back then" we had a larger sense of social conscience. Wrong was wrong, not "if you get caught it's wrong." My daughter is a full time college student. We spend many hours a week on the phone together "doing homework" and writing papers together. I listen and make suggestions and my daughter researches until her keyboard fingers are numb. When the paper is finished we run it through the "plagiarism checker" online.

POPSTeaching Religions (Plural) in Public Education Few of the recent tweets from the discussion at OnFaith on above topic. The topic is worth pondering over even if you speed read few of these articles. The question they are asking is this: The Texas Board of Education, the nation's second largest purchaser of public school textbooks, is revising its K-12 social studies curriculum and deciding how to characterize religion's influence on American history. Three consultants have recommended emphasizing the roles of the Bible, Christianity and civic virtue of religion. As America's children go back to school, how would you advise the Texas board? How should religion be taught in public schools?

POPS@mashable launches social ad creator Not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, i have to give Mashable credit for consistently inovating; first with pumping corporate tweets into ads and now the social ad creator, which seems like a very cool idea. On the other hand, i'm finding them to be less credible as an social news source as the lines have become blurred given their participation in joint ventures (or perhaps even ownership?) of companies they often cover.

POPSSharing Culture, One Tweet At A Time "The idea of Twitter is it's a giant party and you can have as many conversations at the same time as you want with however many people you want, and you essentially sit there and let all the conversation wash over you," he says. "It's very emblematic of the age. Whether it's going to stick around forever, I'm still unconvinced." And so am I...
