Eva Cassidy - Somewhere Over the Rainbow..
WomanInTheMoon11
by WomanInTheMoon11  1-2-2010    1
Beautiful Video.. Most Inspiring Music Singer Ever! Bravo to the "CasaLucita" Youtube channel for such a wonderful video and story with great links to find more on Eva Cassidy.. here is the story as posted from the video description.. Tribute to the Extraordinary Eva Cassidy ~ I discovered the profound beauty and talent of Eva Cassidy just recently while recovering from surgery. Laptop surfing, I was searching for something to take my mind off the emotional anguish and physical pain of my recent wounds. Somehow I stumbled across the videos of Eva Cassidy's Live performance at Blues Alley. From her first notes, I was stunned and captivated. And comforted. Her musical selection, interpretation, range, enunciation, sustaining notes, phrasing, rich timbre and vocal acrobatics are exquisitely overwhelming. Her power and softness are a constant marvel. Her delivery is perfection. The sheer beauty of her music reaches very deep inside me and yet simultaneously transports me f

A tribute to Original Kasper's - history, in hot dogs
Lexica
by Lexica  12-31-2009
More (emphasis mine): Hosted by the Site Memory Collective…from John F. Kennedy University in Berkeley, “Kasper’s Stories” is a part of the group’s commitment to “exploring the changing urban landscape as seen through individual and community memories of public spaces.” In the case of Kasper’s, it’s a study of one place’s impact on its residents–both when it’s there and after it disappears. “You don’t analyze how important something like this is until it’s gone,” said Kim Campisano, one of the organizers. “And you don’t realize how important it is to have that everyday connection with the same place and people in what is a vastly changing world.” …Yaglijian, smiling and mingling for two hours, said he wanted to reopen the place . “It’s time,” he said, confident that he can get the money. “I’ve kept saying that without giving the exact year for the last few years. But this time it’ll be ready again by the end of this year or early next .” YES PLEASE

The Ballad of Bill Hubbard
cakebelly
by cakebelly  12-14-2009    1
"Harry Patch (The Last Tommy) died in July 2009. As the last surviving soldier to have experienced the horrors of the 1st world war trenches , he was 111 years old . Staunchly anti-war , his final years were characterised by a rising public profile , as he finally spoke of the horrors and futility of war . As a machine gunner , he would shoot the Germans legs , rather than kill them. This song is a tribute by Roger Waters to Bill Hubbard ( a young man who didn't come back from the Somme) , and the memory of his last moments , forever carried by his friend Alf Razzel ( Raz) , who tells the story . Re: Kelika's Clip-Stealth boat Ady Gil
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  12-27-2009    2
Intriguing clip by Kelika led me to do a little research. More from the article below: "Now the newly-renamed vessel has been unveiled as the Sea Shepherd's new weapon in the organisation's sixth campaign against whaling, Operation Waltzing Mathilda, which will launch from Australia early next month. The craft, which is capable of up to 50 knots, will be used to intercept and physically block harpoon ships from illegally slaughtering whales. The Ady Gil and the Steve Irwin are the two remaining ships in the Sea Shepherd Society’s fleet. A third vessel – the Farley Mowat – was sent to protest against Canadian seal hunting last year and was seized by offiicials."

This memorial of huge sizes was built in the end of 50’s to pay the tribute to the memory of those people who were killed on their duties during the WWII. The monument is in Guinness Book of World Records as the highest monument at that time. The woman symbolizes Russia and is two times higher than Statue of Liberty with 85 meters high (~280 feet.)

Your Brain On Words
carrerinyes
by carrerinyes  9-27-2009    2
There is no one brain part which when taken away would suddenly rob you of your ability to read. We rely on the same old brain — the same brain that we inherited from our Homo Sapiens ancestors 200,000 years ago when they appeared in Africa. This means that the same brain that hunted wildlife and walked thru Ice Ages is the same brain that can now read a book a day.

Remember Cassette Tapes? These Are Amazing!
sahara
by sahara  10-30-2009    5
Ghost in the Machine: "In this series I showcase a number of portraits of musicians made out of recycled cassette tape with original cassette. Also included are portraits made from old film and reels. The idea comes from a philosopher's (Ryle) description of how your spirit lives in your body. I imagine we are all, like cassettes, thoughts wrapped up in awkward packaging." : )

Police Cars by The Thousands Make Way to Officers' Memorial
merrie
by merrie  12-9-2009    1
The widow of a fallen Federal Way officer wanted everyone to know that the show of support has a profound impact on those inside those passing cars. "To know those people are there for you and to be in the front car is an experience that you just can't describe," said Renee Maher, whose husband Patrick was a Federal Way police officer shot and killed in the line of duty in 2003. "The energy is amazing and, people describe this as being mind-numbing, for me it was just the opposite. It was overwhelming because there was so many people there that were to honor Patrick, and I remember thinking, 'How can I thank them all for being here?' " As many as 20,000 people are expected to pack the Tacoma Dome for the 1 p.m. service. In addition to eulogies from family, friends and public officials, mourners will watch a video tribute to the officers who were killed by a lone gunman as they sat at a coffee shop before the start of their shift.

Warrior and Hero laid to rest, his articulate widow speaks:
Antara
by Antara  11-25-2009
"During an emotional address to the cathedral where her husband was once head chorister, Mrs Schmid warned world leaders - and the public - not to forget the sacrifice made by Staff Sergeant Schmid and countless others like him. 'In my eyes, my husband - my son's father - was a warrior,' she said. 'Warriors are unique. Our protectors - not destroyers. 'In past conflicts, where there was an immediate threat to our shores and our existence, soldiers were never plagued with self- doubt about the value of their role in society, and a people and their soldiers were once close in unity."

She had eight other children aged between 20 and their mid-thirties. Praises to Obama
kareval

But Obama’s skin color has nothing to do with this. Does anyone interested in retaining their merit badge for intellectual honesty really want to argue that Condi Rice or J.C. Watts would’ve spawned a dozen-and-counting tribute videos? This is about brainwashing our children into Leftist identity politics. Sure, the schools can argue that they had some kind of parental permission — which, if true, is somehow even more disturbing — but who even considers doing something like this with young minds? That’s a rhetorical question. There was some guesswork, but to the best of our ability the videos run from oldest to youngest, starting with high schoolers. We list the name of the school and the date the video was posted. From there, if it could be found (or a confident guess made), you’ll find the schools’ website, followed by the original title given to the video and any notes added by whoever uploaded to YouTube. Each video has also been transcribed so you can follow the bouncing

Imagine Peace
sahara
by sahara  11-1-2009    1
The electricity for the light is generated entirely naturally - geothermally from hot water - at the Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant and is one of the reasons for situating the artwork in Iceland. The Imagine Peace Tower is closely connected to Ono's interactive artwork Wish Tree from 1981. The Wish Tree has been integral to many of Yoko's exhibitions around the world in museums and cultural centers where people have been invited to write their personal wishes for peace and tie them to a tree branch. Now amounting to over 700,000 wishes. They are to be housed at the Imagine Peace Tower. EarthCam visitors are invited to send wishes to the Imagine Peace Tower archives by email to wish@imaginepeace.com or by mail to: IMAGINE PEACE TOWER PO Box 1009 121 Reykjavik, Iceland. You can send as many wishes as you like, as often as you like. The site also has many live cams up all over the world, wicked cool stuff!
