Handbook for Living
Jacob173
by Jacob173  1-1-2010    4
 17. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need. 18. Forget issues of the past. Don't remind your partner with His/her mistakes of the past. That will ruin your present happiness. 19. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don't hate others. 20. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present. 21. No one is in charge of your happiness except you. 22. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime. 23. Smile and laugh more. 24. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

'Dry Toilets' Provide Ecological Solution
JICWyllie
by JICWyllie  12-30-2009    2
We have what we call a "composting toilet" in the woodland. If human solids and liquids are kept apart, there is no smell at all, and all you have to do add a couple of pinches of sawdust instead of flushing. I wouldn't put the resulting sweet smelling compost on the veg garden because being at the top of the food chain too many heavy meals and chemicals are contained in human waste. It is good for grass and trees though. And no water is used at all. It is much more hygenic than spreading waste around in water, too, since it is all kept in one container until it is "done".

Chimpanzees Dancing with Fire
chestnut501
by chestnut501  12-26-2009    1
When it comes to understanding fire, chimpanzees might have a leg up not only on the rest of the animal kingdom, but also on those of us in the human species who would sprint in the other direction at the sight of a blaze. A study published in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology argues that these primates don’t panic when the flames start, and could even understand the basics about how fire behaves.

The master grafter: 101 varieties of fruit on one tree
Lexica
by Lexica  12-24-2009    1
More: His modified trees are fantastic monuments to the potentials of science. Until a windstorm this fall dashed the tree to pieces, Real had a 53-in-one persimmon. His cherry tree is a 20-in-one. His Prunus rootstock bears 50 plums and prunes. With his peaches, Real concedes, “I got lazy.” The tree produces 10 types of peaches, five nectarines and an almond. His avocado tree now bears seven cultivars, including Bacon, Hass, Mexicola and Mexicola Grande. Most recently, Real fitted the enduring tree with a branch of Daily 11, a variety whose fruits can weigh 11 pounds. Then there’s that amazing 14-foot-tall citrus tree with its astounding 101 cultivars. From marble-sized calamondins to 5-pound mellow gold pomelos, the fruits constitute 24 species in the genus Citrus , with one or more ripe at all seasons of the year. The tree bears such rarities as sunquats, lemonquats, mandarinquats, trifoliates, citrons, yuzu and sudachi.

A Christmas Day Sermon 1758: Christmas a "Superstitious" Custom
blueridge
by blueridge  12-24-2009    1
They preached-up "liberty" from this custom! This renowned Presbyterian pastor just prior to the American Revolution demonstrates the "superstition" of Christmas, while preaching about the incarnation or nativity of Christ, entirely different than is done today. He expands: Chrysostom, who lived in the fourth century, has these words, “It is not yet ten years, since this day, that is, Christmas, was plainly known to us ;” and he observes, the custom was brought to Constantinople from Rome. Now since this day was not religiously observed in the church in the first and purest ages, but was introduced as superstitions increased, and Christianity began to degenerate very fast into popery; ought not we to imitate the purity of these primitive times, and retain none of the superstitious observances of more corrupt ages? 18th century American society also did not commonly employ decorated trees (a pagan custom) if they did observe Christmas.

Moa Tse Tung & Obama Mt Rushmore Christmas Ornaments At White House ~ WTF!
merrie
by merrie  12-24-2009    2
Oh, once again the Obama’s were unaware. Do these people pay attention to anything other than their own ego? Why let a holiday season come between the White House and making some political statements? The White House pegged controversial designer Simon Doonan to oversee the Christmas decorations for the White House. Mr. Doonan, who is creative director of Barney’s New York has often caused a stir with his design choices. Like his naughty yuletide window display of Margaret Thatcher as a dowdy dominatrix and Dan Quayle as a ventriloquist’s dummy. For this year’s White House, he didn’t disappoint.
