POPS 'Harry Potter' Strikes Gold With Midnight Show There was pent-up demand for "Harry Potter" after that last movie. The two-year lag since "Order of the Phoenix" was the longest fans have had to wait for a new "Harry Potter" flick since the first movie arrived in 2001. Warner originally planned to release "Half-Blood Prince" last November but bumped it to 2009 to take advantage of an open weekend in Hollywood's busy summer schedule. "We're sorry that it caused some angst with our fans, but they're troopers, and they came out and supported the movie," said Dan Fellman, head of domestic distribution for Warner. The new movie has Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) trying to pry loose a hidden memory from one of his teachers, who holds key information about the wizard world's darkest enemy, Lord Voldemort.

POPSSpace storm alert: 90 seconds from catastrophe This is science warning of a 2012 solar event -- NASA and the New Scientist. Nobody is listening, yet. The only way to prepare is to decrease dependency on electricity, fast. Too bad for the electric car enthusiasts.

POPSA Solar Superstorm Could Send Us Back To Dark Ages - One Is Due In THREE Years Such damage as there was, was easy to repair. In 1859, the world ran mostly on steam and muscle. Human civilisation did not depend on a gargantuan super-network of electric power and communications. But it does now. A huge solar storm would cause massive power surges, amounting to billions of unwanted watts surging through the grids. Most critically, the transformers which convert the multi-thousand-volt current carried by the pylons into 240v domestic current would melt - thousands of them, in every country. This would bring the world to its knees. With no electricity, we would not just be in the dark. We are dependent, to a degree few of us perhaps appreciate, on a functioning grid for our survival. All our water and sewage plants run on electricity. A couple of days after a solar superstorm, the taps would run dry.

POPSWhy we should have lower-voltage outlets. This solution is so simple. I've wired houses. Big appliances are already on separate circuits. It seems very practical to simply put the transformer at the service panel and run 5V circuits.

POPS The Riddle Of The Riddler Comedian Eddie Murphy is reportedly playing the role of the Riddler in Christopher Nolan's next Batman film, according to British tabloid the Sun. Johnny Depp was reportedly linked to the role played by Jim Carrey in the 1995 film Batman Forever. Other names attached to the project include Transformers star Shia Lebouf as Robin and Rachel Weisz as Catwoman. Michael Caine and Christian Bale will reportedly reprise the role. The Dark Knight, the Batman film released this summer, has been the most successful film in the franchise, generating more than $500-million in the U.S. alone. It has also gained critical praise particularly for the portrayal of the Joker by late actor Heath Ledger. UPDATE (Thursday, Dec. 18 at 8:20 a.m.) Some people think the rumour is bogus. They are probably right. http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/theampersand/archive/2008/12/18/221144.aspx
