POPSThe Hole at the Heart of Our Strategy ~ Mark Steyn
...to the “noble” “heroism” of suicide bombers and, indeed, objectively supporting the other side in an active war is to be regarded as just some kind of alternative lifestyle that adds to the general vibrancy of the base. Since 9/11, we have, as the Twitterers recommend, judged people by their actions " flying planes into skyscrapers, blowing themselves up in Bali nightclubs or London Tube trains, planting IEDs by the roadside in Baghdad or Tikrit. And on the whole we’re effective at responding with action of our own " taking out training camps in Afghanistan, rolling up insurgency networks in Fallujah and Ramadi, intercepting terror plots in London and Toronto and Dearborn. But we’re scrupulously non-judgmental about the ideology that drives a man to fly into a building or self-detonate on the subway, and thus we have a hole at the heart of our strategy. We use rhetorical conveniences like “radical Islam” or, if that seems a wee bit Islamophobic .......

POPSKevin Richardson- The Lion Whisperer Kevin Richardson, zoologist and animal behavioralist, raises and trains some of the most dangerous animals known to man. To do this he does not use the common methods of breaking the animal's spirit with sticks and chains, instead he uses love, understanding and trust. With this unusual method of training he has developed some exceptionally personal bonds with his students. He sleeps with lions, cuddles newborn hyenas, swims with lionesses. Kevin can confidently look into their eyes, crouch to the their level and even lie down with them - all taboos in the normal world of wild animal handling - yet he has never been mauled or attacked. Some call him crazy; others shake their heads at his unique method of interacting with the animals. And Kevin's secret - get to know the particular personality of each animal, what makes them angry, happy, upset, irritated - just like a mother with a child..

POPSArmy Brigade Stationed inside US Since the end of the Civil War deployment of the U.S. military inside the U.S. has been prohibited under The Posse Comitatus Act (except National Guard and Coast Guard, and use of the military on an emergency ad hoc basis is permitted, such as what happened after Hurricane Katrina).

POPSDenver Terrorist! News? or CNN? This is all over the news the last two days. I can only hope, though, that having a backpack and a computer are not signs of being a terrorist, or we're all in trouble. Like all the people at Gitmo, people are considered guility based on comments of unnamed sources who claim to know the truth. But this is why we have trials. The "unnamed sources," would like to have this guy be guilty so sometimes info is fabricated to make it sound so and until there is evidence in a court of lie every accusation could just be trash. However, of course, if someone is planing to blow up commuter trains, it would be great if they are captured. But accusations by unnamed sources ain't news, it's CNN.

POPSObama and Racism: Head in the Sand? The political reality is that Obama and his advisers must know that racial tension and the absence of national leadership fostering a national discussion of race issues in our country is the Sword of Damocles dangling over this presidency. If the mere act of a reporter like Maureen Dowd reconsidering her ideas and coming forward with an indictment can cause a media frenzy, how much more so the first African American president? It will be worth it. Long after medical care has changed to the point that this era looks like bloodletting and leaches, long after the US economy has shifted and adapted, gone through reforms and reboots, this administration and this president will be remember for one thing above all else: Obama will forever be either the man who healed this septic wound that runs across the back of this nation, or the man who turned away from the mirror to solve more "practical" issues.

POPS Survivors gather to pay tribute to 'British Schindler'
more: The Meisls' story is just one of dozens of extraordinary tales from the now elderly men and women who owe their lives to Winton. As the former evacuees gathered in Prague for their train journey, they hailed his compassion and determination, celebrated their survival and mourned for those children that were not able to escape. In December 1938, 29-year-old Winton was packing for a skiing holiday in Switzerland when his would-be holiday companion told him to come urgently to Czechoslovakia instead. Adolf Hitler's forces had occupied the country's Sudetenland, and Winton was appalled to see the conditions in which the refugees were living. In other parts of central Europe, "kindertransporten" were already evacuating children, but Czechoslovakia had no such programme. Winton immediately started raising money and organising trains to save the children, and on his return to Britain began finding homes and organising visas for them, all while holding down his day job in London. POPSRules For Training Your Dog And Your Politicians
For example, a lot of people are trying to get different behaviors out of dogs and politicians by going to town hall meetings and yelling at them. Now, as Cesar would tell you, that is not a good strategy. While that might intimidate some of the more timid dogs and politicians, many of them will feed off that angry energy and only get more frantic, barking and calling everyone who disagrees with them racists and Klansmen. As Cesar will tell you, dogs and politicians often act out because they don’t know what’s expected of them. To help with that, they need rules, boundaries, and limitations. Politicians are the same way. Their rules, boundaries, and limitations are clearly defined in the Constitution For example, socialism is clearly not allowed, but politicians are constantly testing this boundary and often ignoring it entirely. Why? We’re not always consistent about it. Consistency is important, but that’s not all there is to handling your dog or politician . . .

POPSMeteor Shower Tonight The Perseids are bits of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, which has laid down several streams of debris, each in a slightly different location, over the centuries as it orbits the sun. Every August, Earth passes through these debris streams, which spread out over time. "They are typically fast, bright and occasionally leave persistent trains," says Joe Rao, SPACE.com's Skywatching Columnist. "And every once in a while, a Perseid fireball will blaze forth, bright enough to be quite spectacular and more than capable to attract attention even in bright moonlight." Low numbers of Perseids, including some bright fireballs, have already been reported as Earth began entering the stream in late July. Seasoned observers have counted up to 25 per hour already, or nearly one every two minutes. Most meteors are no bigger than a pea. They vaporize as they enter Earth's atmosphere, creating bright streaks across the sky. The Perseids appear to emanate from the constellation Pers

POPSDevoured By Sand "They might yet stand tall, surrounded by the enemy, or might have surrendered already, lying down in defeat, waiting to be buried. Buildings, fences, houses of worship – nothing is sacred when it comes to the power of sand; sweeping across landscapes, slowly devouring everything in its path. Let us ponder what once was, and discover astonishing and surprising treasures. Shipwrecks and fishing boats seem obvious, but planes, trains and automobiles? Or a whole village? See for yourself all that has been unearthed."
